I'm not sure if anyone else noticed but on the weekend against Hawthorn i could see improvement in his kicking style. He wasn't moving his hands as much and was keeping the ball still.

I know it's natural for him to lean back while he kicks but why isn't Buckley teaching him to be more hunched forward when he approaches his kick. Because he usually sprays them when he leans right back.

Why arn't these simple instructions of goal kicking reinforced to the players more?

They would be reinforced over and over, but under the pressure of the game and with nerves, it's clear Cloke resorts back to his original kicking style.

This is something that will not be easy to fix and he will probably always be a dodgy set shot.

It's extremely difficult to right bad habits involving movement once they've been established - ask any violin or piano teacher. Be assured that it is currently a major focus for the club. See Pie eyed's thread entitled something like MM on SEN Radio.

Anyway, I've predicted and restate here that thsi will be Trav's breakout game. He'll kick a bucket load.:thumbsu:

As long as he gets a routine worked out and sticks to it! Ive always said he drops the ball from too high up, forcing the ball to not drop straight onto his foot, and tries to kick the ball too hard.

I'm not really an expert on it but Matthew Lloyd didn't seem to think he had improved at all with his set shots during the Hawks game. Said he had a bad action and hasn't seen any real improvement in the last few years.

Techinque and all that is important, BUT goal kicking is 90% in your head. It was evident in game v Stk, as soon as one missed another would get nervous and so on. Tony Lockett had a sound technique but he was confident, it makes a huge difference.

I agree confidence is a major thing but I would disagree with 90% in your head. I remember reading an interview with Darren Jarmen and he said he was confident going for every goal because he knew if he followed his technique and action properly he knew he was a great chance to kick it. His confidence came from his technique. If you have a bad technique but have confidence I think your kicking will be inconsistent at best, if you have bad technique and no confidence in your kicking you get a cloke.

Fact is, Clokes dodgy kicking aside, he still isn't even having enough shots on goal to be a real threat.

You actually are right, apart from the StKilda game where he had about 6 shots (and still only kicked 1 goal) he hasn't really dominated inside 50 in regards to taking shots on goal.

This is actually what we want long term from Trav though, he is our CHF, we would be quite happy if he averaged 3-4 shots a game (which he is now) while other forwards had more shots.

Long term when Dawes and Anthony are in the side (and they will be) Cloke will play a lot more outside 50, with Dawes and Anthony the inside 50 targets IMO.

At the moment though, Trav is still taking most of his marks outside 50, when we really need him to be taking more inside 50 while we "build" our forward line up.

Trav's starting point in his leads are not as deep as some of the other CHF.. as such, when Cloke gets the ball, he's normally 60-70 metres away from goal..

it's more the role that he plays in our current structure that is causing a drop in "shots on goal'

I don't like the way Cloke moves the ball around when he is running in.

I think he should hold the ball straight as he runs in.

Whilst he is running, he moves the ball from side to side, as if it were swinging on a pendulem.

Jonathan Brown does that as well. Apparently it doesn't matter if you swing the ball as long as you drop it straight.

I remember seeing a while back some impressive computer software the club uses to analyse kicking technique. A camera is set up and captures the kicking motion and puts a wireframe over the player so you can see whats going wrong. Seeing that kind of stuff it makes me wonder how we can have players with poor kicking technique for years on end at the club. Maybe no-one actually uses it?

I have to admite Cloke is getting slightly better though. He only just missed a few shots last week, one hit the inside of the post which was unlucky, but it gives me hope he can excise his demons.

I have no problem with Cloke leading high up the ground. This is how he is most effective.

I agree that he should be getting more shots on goal, but we look better when he is leading up onto a wing.

What I do have a problem with is when Cloke takes a mark on a wing, then boots it long to Leon Davis in a contest.

It should be the opposite way around...or Leigh Brown and Fraser should be presenting if they are currently our other tall forwards.

If Cloke is going to lead high up the ground, then we still need talls inside 50. Davis can't outmark 2 defenders. He should be crumbing.

Either Leigh Brown or Josh are simply not working hard enough to present up forward...or they are there but are not providing a strong enough presence.

I lost count how many times we kicked it long to Leon Davis.

I am am not sure why Leon is attempting to take marks when other Collingwood players are marking in the pack as well... he is one of the best one grab scoops off the ground going... maybe he likes this years car on offer for Mark Of Year

Maybe he doesn't trust Fraser or Brown to bring the ball to ground?

Cloke has two issues that are being discussed in this thread as individual topics but are actually combined.

Firstly he does not watch the ball onto his foot he watches the goals. The goals aren’t going to move the ball is and that is why he drops it so inconsistently. This is basic football skills, watch him when he is on the run, he watches the ball and kicks straight.

This leads to him having a lack of confidence in front of goals and so not appearing to dominate. Every time he is going for a mark he is potentially thinking “I will need to kick this after I mark it” and therefore he is less likely to mark it.

He needs to watch the ball onto his foot and he will improve his kicking.
