Club Captains Who Miss a Grand Final

Brought up this question on the Regional Leagues board, but might get more of a response here...

We have an interesting situation in the SANFL where Sturt's captain has been dropped due to poor form for tomorrow's Prelim Final.

Does anyone recall a club captain from an AFL/VFL team missing a Grand Final due to poor form? It is something I have never heard of before.

Steve Malaxos was dropped for the finals while captain, in 1990 I think, but West Coast did not make the Grand Final that year.

Malaxos was dropped for the 1st semi final against the Dees in 1990. It was the first time Woosha captained the club and to his credit when interviewed after the game, Woosha told the media that Malaxos was the captain of the club, not he.

However, Malaxos never played another game for West Coast after that.

Was Chris Thredgold dropped for the Preliminary final team or the Grand Final team? I thought he played in the Prelim and was dropped for the GF?

Seamus Moloney replaced him as captain for the GF?

Pretty harsh as Thredgold had been captain for 8 years straight and Sturt won their first flag in 26 years which he missed. Thredgold retired after that season.

Think Maxfield was to start the season. Then had a divorce and moved to Vic to follow the partner and the kids I think.
