Old Essendon have clearly pulled the wool over the VAFA eyes by remaining in Club XVIII north despite winning a flag in 2009. They are serial offenders at this, and it baffles me how they win flags yet are allowed to stay in the same division. "Oh we've lost players"...."Oh we're not going to be competitive" and look what happens. They are in Premier B and should be forced to play with the big boys in that grade, not beat up on Div 2 and Div 3 sides.

Not sure the culture at OE is any good - Ones and Twos getting thrashed and their clubbies going very well. I understand they have injuries high up but still, people judge a club on the performance of the ones and twos not the clubbies.

Same thing happended towards the end of last year, they almost had to forfeit their twos when the Clubbies were playing in the finals.

They need to get their club in order.

Ammo's should have been tough on them. Good on the other side (Banyule i think) for stepping up into the Premier 2 Thirds comp, shows a club that is in good shape and building on the future

If OEG did not field a clubbies side the players would have just gone to NOB's like they did a few years ago and play in the same division, win a flag then go back to OEG when they were able to field a side again

Cub 18 South Kicked off this week with a bang

Finals teams of last year caufield and ormond had good wins over Mazenod and Old Geelong

While last years lower table sides st marys and hampton played in a string match with the boys from ferndale taking the biscuits

In the other Game Richmond Central beat Kew by nearly 100 points in there first game in clubbies.

Are they the side to beat? only time will tell

Doesnt surprise me that the Richmond central boys are already spruking about Grand Finals even though its only April... are they showing there true old scotch colours? only time will tell.

After round one I think we all need a few more weeks to see the challengers for the race. I just saw that Richmond had won by a big margain. From last year it seems Caufield and ormond will be the front runners. Hope big Hamish that OS enjoys there decision because down the wire I hear Richmond Central dont mind the extra Team and the money

Whispers tells me that RCAFC are very happy with their acquiring of the former Cardinals.

Also hearing that there forward line is looking reasonably potent as well.
Furthermore, can you confirm whether a former APS star is really running around for RCAFC... i think he finished in 2005 at Scotch College.
Classis big fish little pond...

Yer Hummerston or somthing is the guy you are refering to. kicked 7 on the weekend. Nearly got drafted after school but went off the rails a bit. Inside word is that he still wears his National draft singlet to training which I believe makes him a disliked bloke down the snake pit

I can see the write up in the herald sun now...

6 months ago, 40 suburban footballers were without a home and staring down the barrel of a season on the sidelines.

Enter Richmond Central Amateur Football Club. Hearing of the cardinals demise at Old Scotch, the board at RCAFC opened up the doors, and gave the Cardinals one last chance at premiership glory.

Yesterday, In a farytale finish to the season, the Cardinals booted 7 final quarter goals against Caulfield to claim victory in the 2010 Club XVIII grand final.

In other news, Old scotch failed to make the finals again, extending their premiership drought to 39 years.

interesting take AHP.

From whispers i hear that there is a classic syndrome at RCAFC of 'big fishes little pond...'
thoughts?

With Old Essendon, no surprise they've taken the soft option the clubbies and not go up after winning a flag. They're a front-running club who like it easy.

F45. I notice with interest that there's been 40 transfers from Old Scotch to Richmond Central and that 19 of the 26 who were listed last weekend come from those 40 transfers. Add to that Ashleigh Hunnam who will make his debut for the RC clubbies tomorrow morning and that's 20 already who have come across to fill your club's 'new' side. What's the story behind this?

Although they've been in A grade for over 30 years, Old Scotch's club culture has ensured that they continually battle for 3 teams. Consequently, they tried to force the club xviii's hand by refusing to register a team in the Club XVIII (south) division, thus forcing them to play in the Premier Thirds competition.

Rather then sit and be puppets for OS, the entire playing group moved to Richmond Central and created a new side.

Will the move pay dividends?

Time will tell.

Since when do the individuals become bigger than the club? Pretty poor form by those who shifted from what you're saying. I understand players may not want to commit to playing higher levels, but if your club needs you, then suck it up and do the right thing.
I found it bemusing that the players continues to call themselves "Scotch", "Scotchies" & "Cardinals" throughout the course of the game yesterday.
Is there a reason they're not wearing Richmond Central jumpers?

Settle petal, no need to be hasty because your side have been cellar dwellers for the past 5 years. You blokes were woeful yesterday. It bemuses me why you blokes even bother entering a team.

We are still known as the cardinals, the Richmond Central Cardinals. And you never heard us use the term Scotch or Scotchies. A Blatant lie. We never referred to ourselves as Scotch even when we wore the cardinal gold and blue.

So sit back, relax, celebrate your mediocrity and watch the Richmond Central Cardinals strive for glory

I think your the one thats accepted mediocrity by leaving scotch because you weren't even able to play in their thirds team.

Green isn't a nice colour on anyone my friends. We (the cardinals) wanted to stay together as a playing group, an impossibility if we remained at Scotch. Thus, we searched for a club that was happy to take us. Richmond were kind of enough to extend their hand and take us on. In return, we attend every club function, we're at every seniors game and we plan on brining premierships to the club.

I'm sure a quick check of our season results thus far, will reveal a different story on our percieved inability to play in the Thirds competition.

You'll have to work a little bit harder to wind me up, old chap. We haven't had a side for 5 years either, knackers. It's our 2nd season and to date the performances in 2010 have been a vast improvement on 2009.

As for calling me a liar, I know what I heard champ. On a couple of occasions I heard players call the team Scotch when urging the side on, but to be fair more often than not they used Cardinals to which you've cleared up is the name the "team" has chosen to go by.

The only green being worn at our end is the club jumper. Have no qualms about being beaten by a better side. Made no difference which jumper they wore, the result would've been the same. That said, the explanation for the move says a lot about the character of the group.

I had the pleasure of umpiring the game on the weekend, which I wouldn't mind some feedback on Uncle Mick.

I think there has been alot of false things flying around about the move and why it happened. I can see from the outside it would be percieved that we were just a bunch of spoilt brats who didnt want to help out and wanted to stay together. But this is just not true. Instead of it being the "character of the group" I believe it is the attitude of OS towards anybody who isn't worth a million bucks or a 1sts player. It was the exact same thing while at school and the exact same thing outside of it. They dont have after match beers at the club. They dont have player of the day match reports or anything. Nothing that people of a lower standard love about playing football and being social with your mates. Thats how the Cardinals started

Uncle Nick what you have to see is we had done a pre-season and were recruting players of all sizes from all backgrounds of all playing ability to come play at old scotch but not have to have all the high society crap that goes on. Imagine 4 weeks before the season a bloke who you have never met comes and tells you. We are sorry but we have not registered you guys a team in the clubbies league but u can come play 3rds(about 10 out of 50 of us would of got a game each week). When we said ok if you need numbers we will supply them as long as we can still have a clubbies team.....the response "we have already done it. take it or leave it". As we discussed what we should do as the anger of not being told this in November last year we revieved an e-mail demanding subs be paid before the season. The arrogance stunk to the high heavens so we decided to stick together as a unit and have pride in ourselves not to be walked all over.

Richmond was nice enough to give us that hope and after some recruiting we have turned into a better side than last year. We arn't just a bunch of guns who got there noses put out of joint. We made a stand as a unit from the best player to the worst from the most talented to the bloke who just wanted to get back playing footy. Make no mistake I would say more than 80 % of the entire squad would be first picked in the 3rds at OS.

Sorry for the long rant but I'm sick of the people saying we didnt think we would be good enough and we are spoilt turds because that is nowhere near the truth

this does make for some good reading.

i thinks its great to see such passion coming from the lowest grade in the VAFA, good rant F45

Many good points made, fraser 45.

Will be interesting to see how the boys from richmond go this year, so far top of the ladder, all is looking rosey i guess

Feedback about the umpiring..? As someone who played on-ball all day I had no qualms. I thought both umps did a good job. However, a few of our blokes thought the younger ump was a little biased to Old Scotch/Richmond Central.

Given I’ve only heard your side of the story it’s hard to make an informed opinion on the matter as I’m sure Old Scotch will have a different version of events. Having said that, and reviewing previous posts made by you referring to the turn of events that led to the transfers and the impact it might have on OS and your more recent long winded diatribe that reads like a yearning for mum's warm hugs after being hung out to dry by your old club, I find it very hard to have any sympathy for anyone trying to introduce politics into 3rds footy. Doesn’t really wash with me, particularly by the complete lack of respect to RC in maintaining the “Cardinals” moniker. Sugar coat it however you like, but it sounds like some of you former Scotch people need to harden up and tow the line. Same goes for RC who are allowing these OS people to walk all over them to play on their own terms. If you want to play by your own rules then you form your own club and run it as it's own entity. Don't cash in on the hard work of others behind the scenes so you can run around and do your own thing.

And just getting back to your earlier post about OS/RC being the team to beat. There's no doubting they're a good side for the grade they're in. Keep in mind though, that they’ve thumped Kew and comfortably beaten HR thus far. 1 side is a new kid on the block who has found the going a little bit tough early and the other is a side who finished last in 2009. Wouldn't get ahead of yourselves just yet....
