Would be reasonable (hopefully) to expect some level of change in our coaching structure this offseason. Just wondering what everyone thinks is a realistic list for us to chase?

Chaplin could move on for new experience, personally I hope we keep him, but I'd be pretty happy to see both Stafford and Choco move on. Who could replace them?

If we miss finals, does Richardson come under pressure as well?

Do we think about Griffith given the lack of fitness this year and the poor management the last few years, or is that more on the selection committee?

I seem to remember it being said that assistant coach contracts are renewed around August, so it's not far off from clubs thinking about it.

I don't know enough about who would be good to get or be available tbh, but the midfield and forward coaches should absolutely be in the firing line given we know there's zero chance Goody will actually be moved on.

BBB in a forward/kicking/skills coaching role would instantly provide more value than he has on the field over the past two years.

Jared Rivers has had some success in the amateurs hasn’t he?

Where is Can Bruce coaching these days?

I don’t know enough about the coaching circles so just trying to think of some old Dees who might come back into the fold.

Can we stop wasting soft cap on having a Goodwin mentor / 2nd head coach. Since he came in he hasn’t been able to do his own job on his own and has needed Roos/Neil/Richo/Chocco to help him while starving our forward coaching setup. This is what needs to be fixed, if Goodwin can’t be head coach on his own then f him off.

It's almost impossible to tell who are good assistants and those who are poor, especially before they're given senior roles to assess.

Being said, everyone says Craig Jennings is a super strategist with an attacking mindset, would be great to have someone like that back.

Trouble is, it seems Goody holds a lot of power and doesn't necessarily like different ideas that contradict his philosophy, so who knows if it'll help anything 🤷‍♂️

Goodwin is just Mark Neeld with a better list.

Changing assistants won't yield better outcomes until Goodwin is given his marching orders. The problem starts at the top, he is an insecure f-wit that does not respond well to being challenged or criticised by those lower in the hierarchy. See Brendan McCartney, Zeeshan Arain....hell even throw in Adam Tomlinson who went from 'one of the boys' to being sent onto the shit heap.

He is under immense pressure to perform to retain his role. Hiring 'mentors' in Choco and Richardson is a poor use of the soft cap as both lack the chutzpah to challenge him. Promising assistants (Yze) have their input in stifled as they are a threat to taking Goodwin's job; is it any wonder that the team looked great in 2021 when Goodwin was relegated to the sideline and Yze was running the show from the coaches box.

He is resistant to change which is why we always roll out the same gameplan and never experiment with the lineups. Another issue is that he puts all of his faith in his preferred senior players regardless of their current form or fitness; see Petty, Oliver, Viney and Sparrow as recent examples. How Petty and Oliver are getting games in their current condition is beyond me, neither are ready.

Goodwin trying to force under done players into the side has been a persistent issue during his tenure. He has zero regard for players health or wellbeing.

“Why the f*** would you change the plan when we agreed he could push through his comfort zone. F***ing (player’s name) was at Chadstone with his mates last Thursday but is f***en concussed today.”

- Simon Goodwn's comments about Angus Brayshaw in 2020 after the doctor recommended that he be rested following a concussion. Hindsight is 20/20 but it is a disgusting attitude given that Brayshaw essentially retired a few years later with an acquired brain injury...

Replacing the assistants with Goodwin at the helm would just be rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic. They will just become sycophants that enable Goodwin in an effort to preserve their job and relationship.

Yep, that's true.

But if we look at the common problems being forward delivery and setup, goal kicking and development then that all points to Stafford and Choco's particular areas of responsibility, so to me that's enough to say a change is needed there.

Hard to know who the best replacements are though, you're right on that.

I have been staunchly in support of Goodwin throughout his tenure with us... but now with our aging list of A graders. its time to get a new head coach to underwrite the new modified game style.

I'm not the biggest fan of goodwin as i was. I'd be tempted to give him a chance for a fraction longer if Stafford gets the chop first, otherwise they can both go

The culture is slipping... has been by our shown efforts the past 2 seasons.
And even in parts of games.

The lack of aggression has been evident at the contest, and also when our players have been dumped unceremoniously.

This has been magnified by our impotent ways of recruiting to add to our list, over the same period. So again, a lack of aggression in the recruiting and in our drafting.
The exception was Windsor and Tholstrup. But previous seasons we sucked at it.

Its time to jettison the chaff, and keep the wheat. sorry Goody; you've been over all of this.

the only way Goody will go is if Nicks gets the boot at Adelaide and Goody wants to go home, highly unlikely but the board wont sack him, not this year at least.

Goodwin should go, missing the 8 should clearly be enough for him to be shown the door.

Stafford, it's a total mystery why he's still here. Bloke must work for free and chaffeur Goody home from the pub every night.
he's still there because we thought we already had everything in place and we didnt need to improve at all to win 4 flags. In other words he's still there (amongst others) because of a staggering amount of complacency.

This is the thing that annoys me the most. We haven't improved the list or coaching staff since the flag. We haven't tried to. Clearly issues front of centre and also decent kicks in the midfield, yet totally ignored it. Haven't tried to chase a gun at any stage. Tigers after a flag got Lynch!! We got Schache!! Complacent big time.

I think the players appear stale (Freo game looked like they had no energy at all)... and i reckon part of it is same old same old... going thru the motions.

Whilst at the same time, Oliver and Fritsch just don't give any hard work defensively, or physically. Culture killers.

Who have we seriously pursued during our last few years that's a gun?

Reasonably solid rumours have been - Cerra, Naughton, Ben McKay, Ben King, Jamie Elliot that I can remember recently-ish. In particular the talk was we were offering VERY large/long contracts to those key forwards but couldn't attract them away.

Perhaps not in the 'gun' category now, but we also had a big crack at Tom Hawkins last year.
