Collingwood's last quarters this season
Points for: 531.......... Points against: 216......... 245.8%

Quite frankly, that is unbelievable.

Yup! It's pretty sweet following a team that's never out of it given we can devastate in the last.

We kill in last quarters--> We're probably fitter than other teams--> Thank goodness we re-signed Buttifant.

West Coast in 1991 were also 13-1 after 14 matches, and they had a percentage of 181.5% at that time.

They were also coached by Mick Malthouse and lost the Grand Final to a team who was termed "too old too slow."

I reckon from Collingwood's point of view, it's good that Mick coached that West Coast team in those exact same circumstances, because he will know where it all went wrong and try to ensure it doesn't happen again.

So we get another flag next year (1992) & 2 years after (1994)?

I could take that.

Indeed.....also not having to travel from Perth for 3 consecutive knock out finals will be a slight edge to the pies!

Here's a doozy.

West Coast finish 3rd, finishing above Hawthorn and Carlton (which is entirely possible) and win their first final vs Geelong in an upset.

Collingwood get done by the 4th-placed team in the QF and the Pies have to then travel to Perth for a Preliminary Final.

Is Peter Sumich their point kicking coach? Hawthorn knock off Geelong after getting the majority of their players back on the track. Eddie convinces the AFL to schedule the replay PF at the G as it is vacant and it is unfair to expect us to fly to Perth twice in 8 days. Dermie gives the Hawks a pep talk and mentions "line in the sand" before an intra-club match that Clarko organises to keep them on their toes rather than let them sit around for a week twiddling their thumbs. Hawks go into the GF with a worse injury list than they currently have, are valiant but there is only so much that Hodge can do with the Box Hill Hawks' players that he is surrounded by after the Hawks get special dispensation from the AFL to play non-listed players.

That is the only series of events that I can foresee leading on from your hypothetical, Dan.

Fitzroy failed to reach the finals in 1971 with a similar last quarter percentage (677-278, 243.5). Their percentage for the first three quarters was 83.7.

Went through the record books to find out the best % of recent time. Didnt have an exact stopping date, but pretty much ruled out anything not within the last 100 years.

In the last 50 or so years, it has been WCE who sat with a % of 162.21 in 1991, Closed followed by Geelong with 161.84 in 2008.

If the pies keeps cruising along, as we are at the moment, and finish with 180+ that we are at currently, we will smash anything within the last 50-80 years.

The highest % ever recorder was 199.47 (Collingwood, 1902) closely followed by 199.36 (Geelong 1899).

No team has ever broken 200.00% at the end of a season.

Incorrect.

Essendon finished with 202.1 in 1898 after H&A.

So you''ll need a couple of upsets along the way just to get West Coast to third..., and then a couple more massive upsets in the first week of the finals, just to make Collingwood travel.....where they are a decent chance of winning anyway given that they have won something like 10 of their past 12 road games?

Whats the point of this ridiculous speculation?

If you can kick 16 goals you will probably win. Collingwood has proven that it can consistently do that, and more importantly it doesnt need single quarter blowouts to get them over the line. It (the single quarter blowout to win) probably happened once, in the Adelaide game, where the Pies kicked their lowest and highest single quarter score for the season in the same game.

Heres Collingwoods goal tallies per quarter

11 ...once
10 nil
9..1
8...3
7...3
6...9
5...9
4...11
3...7
2...8
1...3
0...once

Collingwood clearly treat every single quarter as important. Their strength lies in their ability to consistently score 4 goals or more every quarter. They have rarely scored less than 2. There are 18 bags of 5 or 6. Its an outstanding record so far.

coll are 3 from 3 in interstate finals since 2002. defeated port as massive underdogs in the 02 qualifying final, and in more recent times took the crows to the cleaners at aami in the 08 elimination final while in 07 when they rolled the weagles at subi in a semi final they became 1 of only 2 teams from the bottom half of the 8 to win a semi final under this finals system from the 22 that have attempted it. i think they'd handle the eagles at subi ok should the situation warrant it
