Apart from a couple of funny ads, what exactly do they claim is different about them? If I was a shareholder I'd be upset about the complete waste of money on this re-tagging campaign.

Hang on... I am a shareholder!

Their ads beat the crap over NAB's flag sounding rainbow ad!

We all know they are going to stay much of a muchness. As a shareholder, you would probably complain if profits went down due to them dropping ATM fees and whatnot.

I love the irony of ANZ releasing their profit figures, and having shareholders yelling at them for lower than expected profits, and home-owners and left wing groups demanding that they flip the profits back into lower rates. They can't win!

Nothing is different, chief

Its just advertising that will suck in the simpletons of society.

I think the ads are crap but they are working. Ads are supposed to get people to remember and talk about the firm they are advertising and looking at this thread, even though we all hate it we are talking about it.
IMO all banks are the same and no-one is different they are just a necessary evil

As with anything, higher risk = higher return (in this case higher risk = less fees & interest).

Anyone hear old enough to remember some credit union collapses in the 80's when people were taking on the banks?

Problem is, because of these people went back to the banks hence the stoic similarity between the Big 4 hence a stupid campaign to try and justify some sort of difference but as we're all aware, they're all the same!

How are credit unions better and different to banks? Can anyone enlighten me?

Generally no or low fees, and act on a not for profit basis - just look to cover costs.

But, their range of products is limited (but enough for most people's needs)and your money may not be guaranteed if they go under.

Also, because they aren't members of the clearing system in their own right (most bank with NAB via CUSCAL or with Westpac via Indue) it can take longer for direct entry payments such as your pay to show up in your account or for cheques to clear.

It's marketing 101.

Drum into the masses that CBA is different from the rest, different from the rest, different from the rest. Then, given that banks in general have a poor reputation, someone who has the shits at their current bank might go "hey maybe CBA are different". Voila. New customer.

Yep, some people are actually that stupid.

But if the ads are causing people to talk about what a load of shit they are and how much money they've wasted, that's not good for CBA who don't NEED to create that sort of publicity. A little bank or CU it might work for.
