What ****es me off at commercial radio is the listeners that think mainstream bands are alternative. Like kids who listen to MMM and think Linkin Park is heavy metal, or that Blink 182 is punk. Commercial radio listeners generally have no idea about anything that isnt force fed to them.

When I worked for austereo every month we would call an avid listener of one of their stations and play them "new songs" aka songs that were played on Triple J the year before...
I remember one girl in Melbourne, big Fox listener, I played her Good Charlotte and she admitted she was a punk... I continued on with the survey and at the end of it I put for the next call notes that she classes herself as a punk, next time i called her the music had been changed, by the boss, who I was friends with, and it was all punk, Dead Kennedy's, NOFX, Strung Out, Dropkick Murphies, not a single song she said she would listen to often... funny that...

Like I used to say, triple m and the today network play "commericial alternative" its an oxymoron in itself which proves why they're so crap

[/rant]

I remembered the time when 2Day FM and Triple M were arch-rivals on the airwaves, no love lost back then. The time (around 1991) when one of the cleaners at Triple M called into 2Day FM and said that Triple M were crap! lol

If you're in Melbourne, for real radio, try public radio 106.7 PBS or 102.7 RRR. Sure, not all the segments they have will be to your taste, but they've got 1,000,000 times more variety (ie you won't hear the same song twice in a day on either of these stations), they play new music and the announcers generally are interesting people.

For those of you not in Melbourne, try this:
RRR- You'll need Real Player
or this-
PBS-

hmmm... this got me thinking...

How about we go out and list:
- community radio stations which are predominantly music format and play a good variety
- commercial radio stations which are not tied to any of the big corporate networks, and play a good variety

Let's go for it!

Yeah I've heard about them. We just received a station somewhat like that here in Sydney, FBi 94.5.

Other predominantly music format community stations around Australia include Ultra 106five (Hobart), 96.5 FM and i1197 AM (both Brisbane), and a couple of community stations in country NSW which have apparently become de facto commercial stations for whatever reason- either because they're the only stations in a given area (e.g. Bourke) or because they're trying to fill a void left by the thrashing of commercial stations.

I don't know how often they actually play any music, but the gay station down here (Joy FM?) seems to have nothing but the most boring voiced types talking all Saturday. Or at least they did last time I surfed by their frequency. It's usually ABC Newsradio for me. Avoids the issue of ****ty music all round.

You need sound for this, but I think it summarises the playlists of commercial radio pretty well:
