Consistency

A word we have not benn able to use for many years, but we finally have the opportunity to string some wins together.
Yes, we may well fall over at the first hurdle but we won't get an opportunity like this for some time, to put together several wins in a row.

Our season has been up and down with the closest margin being 19 points to date.
Our wins have been on one end of the scale and our loses at the direct opposite with many of the final margins being around the 10 goal mark.
It seems we either win really well or lose in a terrible fashion.

Have we a honest chance at stringing 5 to 6 wins on end, for the first time in many a year?
Are our stars finally aligning? (sorry for the bad pun)

You'll hear it in a Hutchy exclusive but I have it on good authority that Hutchy is going to reveal that Harker jinxed the Blues ;)

hehe. .. I just hope for a solid performance over the next 4weeks. .. I wont 'asplode' if we don't win all four. .. I guess consistency in performance is what I'm after. ..

There are still some tough games to come.

You would expect us to beat the Dees and the Roos, but we then play Freo and the Bulldogs, who are no easy beats.......

will be interesting, but should we win the next 4, it could really set us up for a top 4 finish which would be well above expectations for the year.

We have become a better team than we were 5 years ago, full of Rookies who are now maturing in their early 20s. We are able to keep winning games decently and have a rather bright future. Loving Carlton at the moment :)

I dont subscribe to us being inconsistent against the Hawks or Pies, which were clear downsides in recent weeks.

I think aagainst the Hawks we didnt take on the zone and failed. Some shocking kicking for goal by Carlos and Betts cost us when we actually did.

Against the Pies I think they beat us in the midfield.

Todays game a clear weakness can be exposed. We need to learn to change and modify for certain actions or strengths of opponents.

Poor Setanta didn't even get a kick against the Hawks. :(

Sigh. Not even getting his kick off from 1 metre out still depresses me.

Then the following week he took a mark 10m out directly in front....

Stopped, went back and kicked the goal.

You could almost hear him thinking.

One of the major reasons I visit this gloomy place - MalPal, you go well! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

We are getting there slowly, at the start of the year most of us weren't expecting to be this well placed in the run to the second half. We are still very young, still a lot of improvement left in a lot of the young kids, next two years will be where the Carlton train steams into history.

Why do people like to pretend we didn't win 7/8 last year?

That is pretty damn consistent.

Winning streaks don't prove all that much (as we showed) - the draw can have as much impact as a teams ability.

People love to throw around the word consistency as though to be a top 4 team, you can't lose matches you're expected to win. You only need to look at the Pies & Dogs last year to know this isn't the case.

The first 3 rounds were pretty much an adjustment period. Since then, we've found a structure that works, we are playing to our strengths, and are executing a game plan with skill and confidence.

No need to over analyse the two loses - both quality opposition, both came to play.

Some supporters seem to be getting a bit carried away with their level of expectations on us beating teams below us - we're not Geelong, we won't win them all.

Ultimately, the higher up the ladder you climb, the more chances there are to have bad games by losing to a team below you. Last year's run of 7/8, and our performance since round 3 suggests we are already performing to the consistency expected of a top 6, or even top 4 side.

Consistency is what you bring to the park each week over a period of time.
We have not been consistent at all for the past how many years.

Our 50 point wins are countered against 50 point losses to similar ilk teams.
We'll lose games as every side does, but our best and worst are miles apart for now.

If we do string 5 wins on the trot this time around it will be all the more symbolic considering the depth of talent we have and possibly slingshot us into true self belief.

So you want to pretend that 7/8 wins is not consistent because it doesn't suit your point? If you want to just repeat yourself, and ignore anything to the contrary, why make a thread...

We proved we can be consistent for more than a third of the season last year, so your comment of not showing consistency for x number of years is clearly wrong.

We knew this year we would need an adjustment period - hindsight will tell us it took 3 weeks.

Since round 3, we have had 2 losses, yet been consistent nonetheless. Consistency doesn't mean winning every week.

You say we've lost to teams by 50 point of similar ilk - really?

Collingwood had the best form in the comp when we played them, and were a top 2 team at least. No shame in losing to them while in that form - no matter the margin.

Our other loss was against the Hawks. Yes they were 2nd last?, but lets not pretend they played like a bottom 2 team, or that they are anywhere near it.

At their best, the Hawks are clearly a top 8 team, and can pretty much beat any team at their best. The final margin had nothing to do with consistency. We had come off a tough month, and played the previous week 1 man down the whole game. We played 2 men down against the Hawks - it is clear why we couldn't run out the last quarter, and consistency had nothing to do with it being a blow out.

If you want to put those losses down to inconsistency, then clearly your level of expectations for us is to equal Geelongs efforts.

We've shown consistency last year, and we've shown it again this year, whether supporters want to pretend otherwise or not...

Interesting.

Maybe we see what we want to see.
You see us having been a consistent team, and I'm suggesting we are on the verge of becoming one.

Maybe.

Or maybe one of us responds and contradicts the other's viewpoint with evidence and reasoning, while the other simply repeats their baseless point like a broken record...

Good thing today was that we came out in the last quarter and like a good team decided to pull our finger out. In the end I am very happy with the win, took some balls and Melbourne made us earn it in shocking conditions.

Took us a little bit to adjust in that second half but we clearly beat them for most of the day. .. the conditions helped Melbourne back into it in the 3rd otherwise it would have been a bigger win. ..

Edit: Was just taking a look at the AFL website news and the ladder. .. customised the ladder to look at Quarters won and was pleasantly surprised to see we've actually won the second most quarters. .. I guess its mainly been some fade out that are costing us and the last couple of weeks give me confident we are starting to recover well from them. .. hopefully we can keep it up. ..
