The forever unlucky loser of Brazilian football finally pulled off a big win when Botafogo beat fellow Brazilians Atlético Mineiro in the Copa Libertadores Final.
Played in front of 80,000 in Buenos Aires, Botafogo won 3-1 despite playing for almost the entire game with 10 men after a send off in the second minute of the game.
One of Rio’s massive clubs, Botafogo are always thereabouts, but always seem to stumble at the last hurdle. But last nights win in the biggest of all South American tournaments well and truly breaks their drought.
A few years ago I was touring South America and was in a little town about 150km out of Rio. The local Botafogo fans had set their own sports bar to watch their games. They were really friendly people, so I’ve always had a soft spot for them ever since.
