Does giving money to business to keep people employed actually ever work?

You got to have a customer to make money.... chicken or the egg?

It doesn't matter anyway, people are shit scared as it is, therefore there not going to go outdoors.

You seem upset.

Everyone should be upset, very little good decision making in history has come at the instigation of a panicked mob. The rate of change and decisions being made by government shows they are not in control and not properly thinking through unintended consequences of what they are doing.

Much like the car industry, as soon as you shut down factories, businesses, disrupt supply chains as is being suggested by our two biggest states you can't just flick a switch to turn them on when everything is better. That's why china kept the lights on even during the worst of their crises. We are rapidly launching ourselves into what will effectively be a subsistence economy.

For those of you that have children or are young themselves they will never forgive the older decisions makers for what they are doing right now and trashing their futures.

So many countries rely on the trade and agricultural systems put in place and maintained by the developed world. Now we are all withdrawing in a panic those countries will likely collapse.

Millions will die around the world from famine, war, extreme poverty that will be brought on by the panicked and uncontrolled response of governments.

All this for a disease who's overall mortality is likely to track below 1% and has killed only 13,000 people to date. This has the possibility to be the biggest collective misscalcualtion in human history, since Europe unecessarily stumbled into WW1.

Doctors and scientists are working on estimating the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be higher than that of most strains of the flu.

I think even with a vaccine and improved treatment, on an apples to apples comparison, COVID-19 would still be deadlier than influenza but no idea to what extent.
Every scientist has stated between 15/20 more time’s deadlier, it has a longer incubation time some saying up to 21 days.

they are worried it might be mutating with other viruses, or become air borne, I know this sound alarmist but about 5 days ago I thought it was all a beat up.

not anymore.

A graphic of the spread of COVID-19 in the USA. It's from the NY times. This is why the USA is acting so hard. Even New York, the heart of capitalism is shutting down.

Its inaccurate because the central states arent testing people

“Only 13,000 people”

FFS that number would already be multiple times higher if no countermeasures had been taken and it’s only just getting started. If we left it completely unchecked millions would die before a vaccine is developed in 12-18 months and the wild spread would provide ample opportunity for mutations that would go on to claim millions more.

Stop living in denial about this.

Do you really think that governments are acting this way because of a panicked mob mentality. They are acting on the advice of medical experts/epidemiologists. If one government only was taking drastic action you might have a point, but all governments are acting this way, and ours slower than most

What will be understated is the number of people dying or ending up with a life long limiting issues, including younger persons, because they weren't able to be admitted to hospitals.

Herd immunity will come no matter the path chosen by individual governments. The main difference between doing nothing and trying to spread it out in a more manageable manner will be the damage done to society from a non Coronavirus perspective.

Just the impact of cancelling all non imminently life saving elective surgery will be felt for years to come. Elective surgery is not about Hollywood career enhancing plastic surgery.

Serious question, why not?

Given most are expecting the total shut down period to be somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months, why would it be so hard to get them back up and running?

There is obviously going to be a massive financial crash, but does it really need to destroy everything?
