Here We Go Again GIF

Vic health minister on the radio just now, has gone against Chief Health Officer's call to make masks mandatory again for retail and early childcare. "We need to empower Victorians to make their own decision."

Like that's ****ing worked well until now.

The time when you were thought to be clear of catching covid again has been reeled back from 3 months to 28 days, as mentioned in the tweet a couple of posts above.

And from the comments in the news this morning about transmissibility of the new variants, I think I'll be going P2/N95 for the next couple of months.

yeah this is politics now, don't want to mandate masks leading into an election so they will ignore that part of the health advice

It wouldn't even be political suicide to mandate masks in transient locations with lots of people, like airports, public transport, shopping centres etc. Masks are less effective at large events for more than a few hours when people are taking their masks on and off to eat and drink, so that can be a personal choice as to whether you go or not. It's just sensible.

It's politics now? It's always been politics.
I very much doubt the last two years the CHO was saying no masks and they pushed masks on us.

The politics the last two years was how they justified their decisions, but a lot of it looks like it was conservative health advice from the CHO

IE Sutton took a limit movement approach and asked for as many measure to limit movement as possible.

What he did and didn't get we don't know because it was all hidden.

Now they are using businesses didn't want this to justify going against the health advice, and this time they have an election in 5 months, I think the politics have changed

who cares about the health system
Election year folks.. Business who donate to us told us we cannot again

Up to the individual now.. Most only care about themselves.

It's not just election year as a reason, WA looks resistant to go back to mandates and we are three years out from an election that McGowan couldn't lose if he kicked puppies down the street every Friday night for entertainment. People are weary and they don't want to go against them, but once the numbers of dead start stacking up, people will want more restrictions and they will bring some back. Would be nice if leaders could lead, but I know why they don't.

yeah i think its much more about the Governments reverting to type with the vaccine out there which is, this is a you problem, our job is to keep our donors and mates happy which means keep businesses open

A quote from the WA Chamber of Commerce over the concerning increase in hospitalisations.

As we look to the future, it’s critical we don’t overstep with health measures to the detriment of the livelihoods of workers and businesses

I mean, let's not worry about people dying, money could be lost.

yeah they don't give a ****

Albanese absolutely needs to be called to task on ending pandemic leave payments and telehealth subsidies, and his argument that it's the previous government's fault because it left them with a trillion-dollar debt and needs to be fiscally responsible only holds water if he wasn't retaining fiscally irresponsible policies like the tax cuts.

yeah they are running the old, all the good stuff is us and all the bad stuff is them/because of them

which is the exact same thing the libs would be doing if they had just gone from opposition to government

At the end of the day it isn't about dead people but how much the health system can cope. And that's the way it has to be. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

It's crass and insensitive but the crux of deck's post is correct. The genie is well out of the bottle - deaths due to COVID, and many of them, are inevitable.

The questions are how many restrictions a government would be prepared to reintroduce, and how many a society would tolerate. To be crude - it is indeed a choice between health and economy, as a full lockdown would no doubt decimate the economy with no JobKeeper or the like remaining as support for people to stay at home. Therefore, it's a balancing act and has been for the past few months since omicron became a thing.

What would you propose should happen in Australia as the winter wave sets in?

If COVID is endemic - and it looks like it's well and truly become that - we're going to have this issue every year similar to the annual flu deaths.

There's a level of investment that should be made in to the health system to increase the capacity to ensure that we're able to provide a high quality of care for more people (and if you look at WA for example, their health system was drowning before COVID was an issue).

But long-term what does it look like to people?

Masks when sick is sensible, and have long been a measure used in countries like Japan. Better work from home provisions (for those who can do so), and employers that are willing and able to offer flexibility to staff so that if they're unwell they're not forced to come to work.

Lockdowns are obviously a blunt-force approach, which made sense when we didn't have vaccinations and were trying to pursue an eradication strategy, but aren't really compatible with an endemic situation.

yeah they've been very successful at pushing the many of these deaths are inevitable

the whole we'll all get covid eventually line really helped with that

the opening up and telling everyone its all ok really helped with that too

the end of press conferences and focus on numbers and deaths also really helped with that

they basically told everyone there was nothing that could be done other than get vaccinated and to just get on with it

makes life easy for them

The questions are how many restrictions a government would be prepared to reintroduce, and how many a society would tolerate.
they also got the discussion down to what do you want freedom or restrictions like the virus gives a shit

**** the economy, the purpose of the economy should be to help everyone have a better life, it doesn't, we've got this warped system where we expect people to just put up and die or starve because "its too expensive to fix it"

yeah and executive bonuses in Australia last financial year were at record high levels, the average bonus was $2.31 million while wages stagnate and we're told there is no money to fix problems.

Shit the Afterpay guys made $264 million just last year from leeching money off poor people

stage 3 tax cuts could fund a lot of support to help reduce risk and spread but no that's not going to happen

What would you propose should happen in Australia as the winter wave sets in?
I do love you saying someone insulting people that don't want to see death equals how would you fix it

why should I have to know the answer, is it my job?

the acting CHO put forward recommendations and the government said nah man we're not going to do that

so why isn't there more push from people for our governments to actually you know, govern
