Cotchin wants to keep the #9

I can only ever imagine Trent in the #9 Guernsey.

While I respect the #17 and everything Jack Dyer means to the RFC, can't help but think that the RFC is turning over a new page in the coming years, and this is a tradition that has only run for nine years anyway. (Nine unsuccessful years at that.)

Trent should lead this club to a new era in the #9.

I really dont like this Captain wears 17 bullshit, Its only been 9 years and its not a tradition that i have grown up with (46 years) why should a champion player like cotchin have to wear it - KEEP #9 SON

If they want the captain to have the 17 on him - Retire the Number permanantly and and put a small number 17 either on his heart/shoulder or behind his neck to represent it.

#9 - TRENT COTCHIN

Very glad to hear this. Keep Cotch in 9!

It never feels right for well-known players to change numbers. The 17 idea was well-intentioned but it just didn't work for mine.

Didn't really want him to change but was ok as long as he wanted to. He doesn't want to so that's the end of it. Love he idea of him creating his own legacy. Non event in my opinion, he stays in 9 and we move on to winning premierships.

whatever number he is gonna be a gun captain! looking forward to the announcement and 2013!
I hated changing numbers in whatever sport i played. I can only imagine that with professional athletes its 1000X's greater a feeling. I used to want to cut kids hands off who tried to grab my number!

KEEP 9

The 17 thing is a rubbish idea.

You make a number your own...

Sorry to single you out (it's just that youre the last one to say this), but this "make a number your own" thing is bullshit. Apparently you can wear kb's number, Royce's, disco's, and McMahon's and their history means nothing because you can make these numbers your own. Yet 17 means your entire identity means nothing and you disappear into oblivion.

Does this mean we should remove all past player references to the club lockers, after all we don't want the Playeres being intimidated, and we want the to truly make their number their own!!

Haha ok so I come here to apologies. I was cert he would take 17. But aslong as its a Tigers jumper I'm happy :D

i respect the legacy & the meaning behind the captain wearing 17, but i think trent's decision is a very good one, it would have taken alot of courage to tell the club he would prefer to keep number 9 if he is made captain, as the whole club have alot of respect for the number 17, but at the end of the day, you cant go forward if you keep going back, hopefully trent can create his own legacy as captain in the number 9

Funny how you see heaps of fans in #12, 9, 3, 4, but I don't reckon I see many fans at games with #17 on thier backs. Maybe I'm wrong?

Don't disagree with the intention of trying to start up a tradition, but let's be honest, it has hardly been popular with the fans, and after all, the fans are what it is all about. ;)

I like Gun's idea of retiring the 17 and having it somewhere on the skipper's guernsey.

I'll say what I've said here before:
I do like the 17 Tradition, but think we've gone very heavy on our greatest ever player and left some other fantastic players with less recognition.

- Our captain wears #17
- Our B&F is called the Jack Dyer Medal
- Our grandstand at Punt Road is the Jack Dyer Stand
- Outside the stadium is a solitary Jack Dyer Statue
- A Room at Punt Road is named after him (just saw in that article)
- Our mascot is named after him.

So although he deserves each and every one of those honours, so does Bartlett, Wright, Hart, Barrott, Richardson, Knights etc (could go on for a very long time).

Massive if, but if Cotchin's career continues on it's current projection, he will go down as one of our best players ever. He deserves this to be in a number he can create some history in instead of as a tribute to a past captain he already greatly respects.

It's a bit different when you take a player's number off him after he's proved himself good enough to be your captain. In that case he's already spent years making the number his own (and growing out from under the shadow of the players who have worn it before him), and then you wipe that out and make him start again.
