The positives that the AFLW brings far outway the negatives...

Nothing will drive a wedge in the game more than the men (already subsidising the AFLW) asked to take a hit and continue to bail out AFLW. I haven't heard anything about AFLW cost cutting? Happy to be corrected.

How much more could they possibly cut costs?

That's where the entire discussion about the outlook of the league stems from, costs will get cut across the board, there's really nothing left to cut from the AFLW without going all the way.

From a PR point of view, culling the AFLW will do far more damage than good to the AFL, especially if you consider that around 50 % of AFL club members are women.

Even from Government subsidies/grants, the AFL will find a way to keep the women's league going.

Easy, find a way to make a smaller loss. Would like to see AFLW trim their expected 10% and 11% pay rises for 2021 and 2022.

I don’t disagree with you, but if the AFL was to sideline the AFLW for a season or two I don’t think it would cause much anger toward the league at all. I also think the majority of women members wouldnt care all that much if the AFLW was put on hiatus. There were plenty of women supporting the men’s game before AFLW- All the AFL would need to do is say ‘we’ve obviously taken a large financial hit like everyone, we are saddened to say we are unable to bring back the AFLW in 2021 but will reassess next year once we step away from the brink of financial ruin’

result- a couple of days media coverage and the women’s VFL will continue. There will be much, much bigger issues to dwell on in the next couple of years to come.

Being put on hiatus for a year or two is fine, canceling it outright (as some have suggested here) would be a disaster of Titanic Proportions.

I wasn't suggesting culling the league, that would be insane. I was suggesting putting it on hold for a short period would be a fair PR hit at the time, but would be largely forgotten a few years after resumption. The current players (particularly veterans) would lose, but the AFL and the growth of the AFLW would barely lose momentum over a 10 year timeframe.
Plus if the AFL season is cancelled entirely for 2020, it's hard to argue that not running the AFLW for 2021 is an unreasonable measure. Though in that scenario the league will have much bigger concerns than what to do with the AFLW.

The 50% membership number is a misleading statistic, the AFL have historically had high female numbers amongst club memberships (comfortably over 40% pre-AFLW, it's always been one of our major points of difference in comparison to the NRL), there might be some protest cancellations, but the number wouldn't be much. As for government money, there probably isn't going to be any of that going into sport for awhile after this, AFLW would be back well before the government money is.

That would require a renegotiation of the CBA, which could easily lead to another episode of 'look at me' from Darcy Vescio.

What is this sudden fascination with the AFLW dying?

The crisis has just given some sort of justification to the trolls, recalcitrants and MRA types who hate the league for existing at the best of times but have been under increasing risk of having their feelpinions fade with the winds of change.

Similar threads popping up like mushrooms digging the graves of GC and GWS.

Abusing those with whom you disagree isn't a way to change their minds.

Maybe this thread is looking at it wrong and that AFLW maybe is strengthened through this crisis. With the draw down on the AFL soft cap the small amount for AFLW maybe aggregated. Preventing the loss of more jobs. But this won't bode well for female coaches

Listening to Eddie McGuire on Footy Classified on Wednesday night, it was of his opinion that the AFLW was safe. He didn't go into any detail, but he was adamant the AFLW will return next season.

The Australian 30.3

"The AFL has secured the cash that it hopes will help it survive the coronavirus" ie up to c.$600m line of credit loan, with Marvel offered as collateral.

All 18 AFL clubs, & 14 AFLW teams will remain, for the long term.

EDIT:

EDIT:

AFL clubs will, from 2021, cut permanently their Football Dept. cap (not including player wages) from $9.4m $6.4m pa ie a saving of $54m pa for the Clubs (I assume the AFL will cut its grants to them by a similar $54m pa)

I can honestly see the AFLW being shelved for the time being. The AFL are only going to care about generating a profit at all costs once everything goes back to normal and I can’t see the AFLW at this early stage being able to survive on its own merit unfortunately. Perhaps through government funding and support the AFL can keep it around but for quite some time to come governments are going to have other concerns ahead of entertainment.
Read a bit about ‘branding’.

Can you please share your source bud? Would be greatly appreciated

Not sure he's allowed to post a picture of his arseh*le on BigFooty.

I've seen the $14m number floated around a few times as total cost to run the AFLW, but that obviously ignores sponsorships and other revenue, which means calling it a loss is wrong.

No, it as mentioned as the cost to operate, otherwise, if they were taking about the biggest expenses, then the salary in the mens competition is the biggest expense. The $14m is the cost (revenue less expenses) to run the AFLW.

The AFLW is certain to resume in early 2021.

However, large, permanent cost reductions will be made at the 18 AFL clubs, to ensure the 18 clubs remain viable.

Discussion about cost cutting here.

Will the 14 AFLW clubs, & AFLW staff etc also be implementing significant cost cutting?
