Could Thompson/Hird be another Malthouse/Buckley?

2 more wins in 2013, incl flogging them twice, and the best thing is we haven't kidded ourselves re where our list is at and are re-loading much better this off season. Covered.

You didn't flog us twice. The first game we were in the lead for the majority of the time but seemed to run out of legs. Second one I'll give you that, but don't try and rewrite history.

Don't see what the big deal is.

Essendon beat us regularly in 81 and 82 and we still got the chocolates.

It's just the way of the world.

True, how could you justify bringing back Hird if they in a flag or come very, very close under Thompson?

It would be justified if Thompson doesn't want to coach for another year. If he makes the grand final or wins the premiership and wants to go on Hird would probably step aside, but I think Thompson took the job partly because he knew it was only a one year commitment.

No we didn't,just like you didn't flog us twice the year before.

23 points versus 17,neither is a flogging

In that the more experienced coach is clearly more proven and getting better results, but then has to make way for the unproven golden boy due to an earlier arrangement?

It will also be interesting to see what happens if the Bombers make the Top 4 under Mark Thompson. With Hird due back mid August, will the members really want Thompson to hand over the reins two weeks out from the finals to someone who hasn't been in the coaches box all season?
Hird will not be coaching next year AFAIK, read an article about it somewhere.

I agree Thompson will be relieved to see our 2014.
But it's extremely unlikely we'll see Hird in the seat again.

I actually thought we were lucky to get away with the win first time round, umps gave us a few favours in the last iirc.

You would think that everyone has learnt from the potential epic fail of our experiment - giving bucks 2014 to prove all who doubt him wrong though. Interesting that crazy vossy, the messiah and figs were all contemporaries of each other. Brilliant players - um 'interesting' coaches so far.
The funny thing is that flogs like you will then go and bathe in the glory of any success we have down the track as a football club.

Do yourself a favour, go out and buy yourself a Carlton guernsey and membership.

Circumstances totally different.

A better comparison would be Joyce-Jeans where Joyce minded the fort while Jeans was ill. He kept the job all season, won the flag, then handed the job back to Jeans

This is very different. Unlike Malthouse, Thompson doesn't have an ego so big that wont allow him to being senior assistant. He'll also get to prove a point about a number of things, perhaps Hurley back is one of them. Just as significant in indicating how Thompson has his ego in check is that interview about Hurley where he points out that that wont be his decision alone, i.e. the decision belongs to the whole coaching group.

After a year studying on the French Riviera Hird will be back to torment you all. Some of you fail to realise that if the players want to play for him, he is capable of doing the job and the club wants to employ him ... then he aint finished.

However, I do wonder if Essendon were to be fairly successful next year and Thompson was keen to be involved in 2015 how would they structure up. Would Hird be an assistant coach to Thompson?

I am almost 100% sure though that Thompson and the club feel that Thompson is very likely to retire at the end of next season, and this is why Craig was hired

I love the fact that there are so many Buckley bashers. By 2015 he will have the club back as a serious contender. He has had his clean out, he ran with the 2010 list for as long ax he could because he may have lucked out and gone deep into the finals. But in reality, the list was in need of rejuvenation after 2011. He now gets next year with HIS list, with HIS imprimatur on all aspects that he can control now. He will do well once he gets 50 plus games into these kids.

Shaw and Daisy were two of the better players in the comp.
Rumours are that they are not the only ones disenchanted - granted, only rumours I know.

Walsh, Buttifant gone also.

IMO there will be a bit of pressure on Bucks in 2014.

\This is the thing...we ( well not us-the fans: but the club) will make the best decision when the time comes.

And not to mention Hird himself will always do whats best for the club. For him there's only two things in his life he cares about. His family and the EFC.

There will be no Hird ego attack on Bomber to force his way back if everything is going splendid with Thompson. There won't be some Days of Our Lives drama played out with everyone taking side.

It's not even remotely worth discussing atm...the season hasn't even started ffs..

You surely can't believe that do you? Really?

Hird is a narcissist. He will do what's best for himself.

He has farked over and yet most of it don't see him for what he is. I respect your club in that it fought a good fight to get the players off. They deserved that,

That's enough of me and my Hird rant.

There's pressure on every coach. Buckley has now got his list, not what he inherited. A list that had to decline because it had played finals for 8 years. Now he has put his stamp on the list, he gets 2 years to prove himself.

In some ways inheriting the 2011 list was always going to delay him putting his stamp on the list because you have to see if that previous generation that came relatively close in 2011 has the ability to land a flag. I'm more than confident he knows what he's doing, disenchantment or not. Every club has disenchantment, some clubs thrive on it because it means competition for places is fierce. Just because he is not the Liberace type like Malthouse, loving his young boys, doesn't mean Buckleys penchant for no nonsense professionalism won't work. It just means that his way needs time to bed in.
