Cousins to 'absolutely' play AFL

And even if he wanted to enter the draft system in coming years, Cousins would need the permission of the AFL.
Or a court to hold that the AFL had no cause to withhold registration from him. Mathews can talk about perception but it aint that convincing as evidence.

I'd take him! Instant success!

If he does his time in rehab, every deserves another go... he just ran out of goes at WCE!

Although he's 29, he's got 5 years left, as long as Judd does IMO!

i find it funny that noone has picked up on the whole 'yeah hopefully wont be gone too long, gotta start training' line.
You can see where his priorities lie, this whole rehab thing is just to make it seem like hes doing something. I doubt he even has an addiction, probably just likes to party hard and often. Again, he is making the media and the AFL somewhat happy by going to 'rehab'.
B/S to those who say the wce are at fault. What were they supposed to do. 50% were calling for his head, 50% saying nah we jumped the gun. He has had alot of chances, he still has a charge pending in January re: saying no to a blood sample. He was claearly off his nut when he got out of the car.
Sheesh, some of you need to have a look at cousins, and see if its worth the 3 years at most you would get out of him and his now dodgy hamstrings. I wish him all the best, but you have been warned over and over again.

clubs takes risks with most players, whether there gona perform or not and live up to their hype
if cousins is put in to line with strong discipline and support he should be able to continue his afl career until he is around 34

He did his hammy this year... is that the first time in his career?

hes done his hammy twice since he returned in 2007. First was when he going to play again against brisbane, 2nd was against port. Thats twice in the space of around 9 weeks?

I'd be surprised if he plays again, but if he does, it will surely be for Richmond. Either at pick 2 in the ND (we dont want him) or pick 1 of the PSD.

I don't think they will use the Pick #2 in the National Draft on a 29 yr old....they will grab morton or cotchin....i think that he might go between 30-40 in the national draft...he won't make itto the PSD.

Nah, Richmond are too gutless to pick up such a controversial player IMO!

Gutless! Mate, you mustn't follow footy - as we picked up Kent Kingsley in the draft last year.....shit, if we can go for Kinglsey - then a proven champion like Ben Cousins with NO 1 PSD is a shoe in.

I hope for Ben's case he gets healthy first, football should be second.

But Greg Miller will come and out and say - with Pick 1 PSD, we will get the best available player, that would have to be Cousins if he is there, as Brennan has re-signed....

He would go much higher than 30-40 in the ND. Okay, pick 2 may be a little high, but I guarantee he wouldnt last past 10-15.

If the AFL want the government to legislate its drug policy it'll consider re-registering Cousins - especially in time for the PSD. Vlad already said they wouldn't consider him ever, didn't he? (I thought I read that somewhere in the hundred of pages.) By the way, those same hundred of pages add up to a fair claim that he brought the game into disrepute.

Cousins - great AFL player, pathetic human being and showing no signs that he's learned anything at all. One suspects reality will hit hard when he finds the real world outside the WA celebrity fishbowl has rejected him and his career really is over. You'd think the brave move by the Eagles to sack him would have given him a clue.

NO criminal or ASDA drug charges = AFL can't deregister him..

BTW that last contact that was torn up was a contract binding him to the West Coast eagles FC, not the AFL in general specifically.

Legally the AFL cannot stop him from nominating for the draft.
I also blame teh bloody WA Police and Media for what's happened and he has my total support and blessings to return and succeed at AFL level.

Depends on what sort of money clubs have....and whether they are on the rebuild.....

Adelaide - Probably not interested...as they are going for youth and rebuilding.
Brisban - Lethal smashed any chance there with his big mouth.
Carlton - No Hope, Judd...would be a bit pissed.
Collingwood - Small chance...WCE connection, money but only pick #31
Essendon - Looking for a class mid...but do they have the cash?
Freo - I think he'll want out of Perth.
Geelong - No Way!
Hawthorn - Small chance...but probably not enough cash and there reported drug issues.
Kangeroos - No money
Melbourne - Big chance if they have the room and pick to use
Port - See Adelaide
Richmond - Maybe, Can Afored him...but will they use pick #18
Sydney - No cap space
WCE - ......
WB - No cash

So i would say...essendon, richmond, collingwood & Melbourne. IMO

What about the Saints?

How much football did he miss though leading into hamstring injuries?

It would've happened to ANY player who had such a lengthy absence!

Was it? Normally all player contracts are done with the AFL. So, unless the Eagles had a seperate player contract with Ben, then it was a contract with the AFL.

What makes you say that? They can say he has already damaged the brand and will likely continue to do so, thus they do not want to register him. Why do they have to, all contracts happen through the AFL, the AFL like any organisation, has the right to hire the employees of its choice.
