COVID-19 / Coronavirus

This is the confirmed COVID-19 cases in some countries of interest. You can see that it took China roughly a month to halt the the progression of COVID-19 and they were using all of their authoritarian powers (such as drones, the army and welding doors closed so people couldn't get out of apartment buildings...allegedly). Australia is the blue line....so nothing to worry about, right?

Hmmm, not really. The absolute magnitude of our progression is small relative to some of the other countries so it hides the slope on the first chart. And what is our government doing to halt the progression of the virus? Well two weeks ago the prime minister said "here in Australia we have got ahead of it early, and we are staying ahead of it"...pretty much right at that moment the number of confirmed cases turned near to straight upward on the chart below. Since then, after waiting to see what Jacinta Ahern did, we copied her mandatory self-isolation policy and eventually imposed a ban on mass gatherings...right after a hissing mass was performed and the opening round of the NRL.

Comparing ourselves to a high population density but organised country like Singapore, we can see we have overtaken them (hard to believe given our swift and decisive actions).

So this data should be pretty close to accurate numbers but I have noticed the occasional discrepancy at state level between reported figures. Don't base any health of financial decisions based on these charts (I'm not a doctor or financial advisor) however I hope you can see that we are only at the beginning of this and given our government's hesitant attitude towards closing schools and encouraging people to stay home etc., we may well be in for a much longer journey than the Chinese example. Without wanting to overly alarm anyone, if you assume a 20% infection rate (very bottom of estimates) and a 1% mortality rate, that is 50,000 people in Australia who will die from this disease. At the same time, there is no shortage to toilet paper so please don't raid supermarkets. Although I am very thankful Aussies hoard toilet paper instead of guns and ammunition like what is happening in parts of the US.

This is a really insightful post.

Crazy to think only a week ago Daniel Andrews was assuring us all that the Grand Prix would go ahead and for people to not panic. So while other countries are going through hell and we are watching it unfold for some reason we encourage people to travel to Australia to watch a car race 🤦‍♂️

So we have a situation where we both work full time and have kids at primary school.
Both our employers are saying business as usual.

The school is sending updates every day and it’s only a matter of time before they shut down.

we are then told don’t give your kids to the grandparents as the kids carry it and are able to fight it but put the grandparents are at greater risk if they get it.

It is very challenging times.
Yep. A lot of people are facing the same problem. I was pushing for our office to send people home to work where possible but no green light yet. The moment my wife gets the green light to work from home I’ll make the call for myself so we can then at very least keep my son out of before and after school care.

If you hear the "business as usual" line from your bosses at work call their bluff. It isn't business as usual and no amount of trying to pretend it is will make people feel better about this current situation. ATM there are many companies out there sitting on their hands and being reactive instead of proactive in dealing with the pandemic. It literally feels apocalyptic in the general public right now. Everyone is anxious and it's unnerving to be a part of even though I'm not one of those people who are losing their mind and panic buying.

Same deal for us , extremely challenging times ahead

💯. Peter Larkins just said we are predicting 10-30% of Aussies will cop this.
That could mean 2.8 million and up to 8 million based on these predictions.

Surely we have to isolate right now don’t we?
Yes. And the cretins running the show reckon it will spread slower if schools such as the one I teach at remain open. A school which is the largest in the southern hemisphere with 3800 kids, they have no clue.

Do you or Mrs Lickmesocks have siblings that you might share your brood with? It might be just the adventure for your kids and their cousins.

We are in uncertain times right now, there are no worries about that, but to get through we need to think outside the square - make the very most of a bad situation. That's what being 'Australian' is to me.

I work in a youth detention centre
I don’t think it will be long before we isolate the entire precinct
Only staff in and out..no visitors
Or we could do what those crazy Iranians did and let 'em all out.........temporarily of course......

Scott from marketing has made an awful balls up of the government response to this. I have a temperature sore throat runny nose and I am extremely tired. My kids go to a school where a parent has been diagnosed positive and he was in meetings with the principal and office workers who are now in isolation. Yet the school is still open. I went to get tested today and rang up the centre for information. The only thing they said was wear a mask whilst waiting in line - I laughed and asked where can I get a mask? Drs don’t even have enough masks. Then I wait in the line for an hour, feeling very sick and spluttering over everyone, only to be told I wouldn’t be tested as I haven’t been overseas. Which means what now? Do I catch the train and go to work tomorrow (don’t stress - I won’t).

Meanwhile I look overseas and see people in lock down and hospitals turning away over 80s as a lost cause. Yet our leaders are living in a fools paradise that we can still watch the ‘Sharkies’ with a tiny in hand. Get ****ing real. No politician or leader remembers polio or WW2. We are stewing in our own complacency and mark my words there will be a cost. We need to shut down now.Not fly In Italians for a Grand Prix. Shut down schools. Shut down PT. Send people home from work.

This seems to be pretty consistent with what I am am getting from quite a few sources. Certainly better than what the government is telling us.

Make of it as you will.

"An Italian doctor who worked at Shenzhen Hospital in China was appointed by the Chinese government to participate in the hive study group of Wuhan or Corona-Virus pneumonia. He wrote a very interesting article, which is summarised below:

- If a person has a runny nose and has phlegm, he is not infected with the Corona virus, because pneumonia gives a dry cough without a runny nose. This is the easiest way to locate it.
On the other hand it is good to know that the Wuhan virus or corona virus is not heat resistant and dies at a temperature of 26 to 27 degrees. Therefore, drink plenty of hot water such as tea and herbs. It's not a cure, but it's good for the body. Drinking hot water is effective for killing all viruses. Try not to drink cold or frozen fluids. Expose yourself to the sun if it's winter.

- The virus is quite large (the cell has a diameter of about 400-500 nm), so any normal mask (not only the mask 3M & N95) can filter it. However, when an infected person sneezes in front of you, it will spread about 3 meters before falling to the ground. That is, it hovers in the air.

- When the virus falls on a metal surface, it will live for at least 12 hours. So remember that if you come into contact with any metal surface, wash your hands thoroughly with soap.

- The virus can remain active in tissues for 6-12 hours. Regular laundry detergent kills the virus. Winter clothes that do not need daily washing should be placed in the sun to kill the virus.

Information about symptoms of pneumonia caused by corona virus:

- First it will infect the throat, then you will feel a dry sore throat that will last 3 to 4 days.

- Then the virus will merge with the nasal fluid, enter the trachea and enter the lungs causing Wuhan's pneumonia. This process will take 5 to 6 days.

- A condition of pneumonia, high fever and breathing difficulties will follow. Nasal congestion is not like normal nasal congestion. You'll feel like you're drowning in the water. It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you have this feeling.

On prevention:
- The most common way to get infected is not to touch things in a public place such as railings, door handles, handles on the bus, etc., so you should often wash your hands. The virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but many things can happen in these 5-10 minutes, such as rubbing your eyes, touching your mouth or face, etc.

- It is recommended to gargling with Betadine gargle to eliminate or minimize germs while still in the throat (before moving on to the lungs).
Maybe the new corona virus shows no signs of infection for many days, so how do you know if someone gets infected? The latest information is that the incubation period may be up to 28 days before the symptoms of the crown appear.
By the time a person has a fever/cough and goes to the hospital, the lungs can be 50% in fibrosis and maybe it is too late.
Taiwan's experts give us a simple self-control that we can do every morning:

Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you do it without coughing, without suffocation or a bad sensation, etc., it is proof that there is no fibrosis in the lungs, a basic indication that there is no infection.
At critical moments, please look at a fresh air environment every morning.

We must all ensure that our mouth and throat are wet, NEVER dry. Drink minimal water every 15 minutes. WHY??? Because even if the virus enters your mouth ... drinking water or other liquids will transport it through the esophagus to the stomach.
There, stomach acids will kill the virus. If you do not drink enough water regularly the virus can enter the trachea and enter the lungs. And that's going to be very dangerous."

The US president was just asked how soon, IF we all follow the new rules announced in the last 10mins which include: don't go out to eat at public eateries, schools closed, avoid travel, avoid being in groups over 10 people, stay away from older relos, quarantine ENTIRE family if one member is tested positive, etc, it will take to get through the majority of this.....
Said July/August.
And you know that is a positive estimate.

So that's 4-5 months minimum.

I reckon Aus is probably 2-3 weeks behind US.

Be very careful what you read online and was quoted above as 'knowledge' about the virus and it's treatment.
My wife gets access daily to everything that's real, and the above was a made up posting.
Doctors are still working on understanding the disease, and it's bloody slow going. Surprisingly slow to get any new insight.

I'll post anything I hear that is consequential and being used by the big players in this fight.

I worked in the Food Manufacturing industry for 20 years in Quality Assurance / Food Safety roles and I used to get exhausted dealing with all of the multitude of requirements from government regulators / customers / standard bodies regarding meeting their standards of hygiene / testing / QA systems / etc.

But what got me the most is the customer who was purchasing product from our company and making us meet their high standards was at the same time purchasing cheap products from China. I always used to ask the question to them whether they held their Chinese suppliers to the same standards they were holding us and looking at the current outbreak of covid-19 and the unsanitary conditions it originated from in that wet market I think we have an answer.....

End of the day I don't see something like Covid-19 occurring in a country like Australia/Germany/USA etc because as imperfect as our governments may be they are by and large (relatively) free of corruption and we can trust that our officials actually have our best interests at heart.

This is not having a crack at Chinese people but end of the day the Chinese government will need to take a level of responsibility for this worldwide disaster (both in allowing it to happen in the first place and their delayed reaction once it did).
If all those testing requirements wasn't enough you most probably had one guy working just to make sure you were NATA complaint also. Whats good for one should be good for another.

Lets see the Chinese pay their employees a similar wage and working conditions and call a stop on their manipulation of the Yen though constant government devaluation, might be a good way to bring back manufacturing in this country.

Written spoken and authorized by B"n"G, for all Australians.

Snopes (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/taiwan-experts-self-check/) and a few other sources are debunking the holding your breath check.

I know everyone here has good intentions but can we please do some quick checks before posting information here. Note: I didn't check the rest of the post and I did hold my breath for 10 secs before checking it out :)

And to top it off if you ever want to export product to China (say milk powder) they have some of the most stringent testing requirements in the world for imported products yet at the same time they put melamine in their own milk powder sending thousands of babies to hospital (and locking up the parents of the affected children for complaining about it).

Like I said before, say what you want about how flawed our system of government is, I would still take it every time over the alternative......

Seriously? You're re quoting the US president as some sort of authority ??

"Trump assured Americans at that February 26 news conference that the number of people infected in the United States is "going very substantially down, not up." Trump even bragged about the 15 cases at the time on US soil, claiming that "the 15, within a couple of days, is going to be down to close to zero." "

Over the next weeks and months, the US figures will be going through the roof. They are in deep deep sh*t.

It beggars belief that they would set a sudden deadline, as they did this week, for all Americans returning from Europe and elsewhere and, in doing so, caused tens of thousands of them to queue up in confined spaces at airports for up to 6 hours.
Just wait and see what that does for the spiraling graphs over the next few weeks.

I have a feeling that the USA is about to feel the effects of having such a s.. t health care system over the coming months.

Realistically there is probably no better place on Earth to be infected with covid-19 than Australia given our world class (and freely available) medical system.

On the flip side if I was in America right now I would be hoping like hell that I didn't get sick soon!

I don't feel much pity for them either, for some weird reason basic health care is seen as some kind of socialist evil over there (guns for everyone on the other hand is a god given right).

Sooner or later the chickens come home to roost!
