I'm too young (or wasn't following cricket at the time) to remember McDonalds Cup and FAI Cup, so would you say the Mercantile/ING period was the competition's peak in terms of interest?

yeah for sure Mercantile & ING was definitely the peak.

they even had 'hit the mercantile mutual sign' which steve waugh won something like 140k.

i think it started dwindling when it became ford ranger and the start of 20/20.

I can remember ‘Cheeks’ bashing a big hundred like a 150 score and it was a big thing at the time for domestic cricket. Now nobody gives a shit unless it’s JFM breaking a fastest tonne record

The competition has now dwindled down from a genuine home and away 10 game season to 7 games.

It was full home and away (10 games) for only 10 of its 55 seasons.

Even without the sponsorship, they should just call it either the Mercantile Mutual or ING Cup. These were the hay days of course and would help with engagement.

I used to love heading to the ING Cup as a kid. In Brisbane cricket back then, the kids were given these passes which would get us in to all Shield or ING games at the Gabba for free. Love it on the weekend settling in to watch the full day's play. Can still picture the day at Junction Oval when black tarps were put over part of the square to cover the wet areas and get play under way. Brad Hodge scored a century that match.

Or when Doug Bollinger took a hat-trick against South Australia. I was in a cricket shop that day and the game was on the TV.

Adam Voges scoring the fastest century ever in the comp at North Sydney Oval was a huge one too. Brad Haddin did a great job in the chase in that match but wasn't quite enough.

Can even remember the intro song for the Mercantile Mutual Cup! The good old days when Victoria would play NSW on the only weekend the test players were available and usually Warney would be ‘rested’

It was akin to anything Zeppelin ever released:

I f**king loved indoor cricket.

Sadly as someone who spent more time playing outdoor and valuing it higher, if I was ever going to achieve anything in the sport it would have been at indoor level. Our side managed third at the state titles in an under 19s carnival and played against a few guys who went on to play for the state senior team from memory and it was a high standard of cricket. With those balls zinging around it’s probably no coincidence that my ability to play in swing probably disappeared around the same time i stopped playing

Was 40 overs with a max 8 overs for bowlers.
