They have a bowling attack full of part timers, and only four batsman.

Indian batsmen averages - 8 averaging 35+
Jaiswal 53
Kohli 48
Sundar 48
Reddy 45
Pant 42
Sharma 41
Jadeja 36
Rahul 35

At some point we need to talk about Bumrah as a contender for all time best. He's extraordinary.
I think it's very likely he'll be in that conversation by the end of his career.

He took his 200th Test wicket in this match, so he's still miles off the records held by the likes of McGrath, Anderson & Broad (i.e. most wickets by a fast bowler). Given time, he could get there. However, if he keeps bowling this well, with this low an average, he'll end up in that conversation even if he retires before reaching those wicket records.

Depends how many bowlers are also being replaced.
We should be replacing all of Khawaja, Marsh & Starc.

The reality is that Khawaja will hold his position, and Starc will probably do likewise (before bowling India to victory in Sydney). Marsh and (maybe) Starc are the only realistic changes, and only if Starc admits that he's cooked for the series and unfit to play in Sydney.

Maybe, but you're not taking Marnus or Smith out after this.

If they want the bowling option it's Webster, if they want a pure bat it's probably Inglis
Weren't the commentators talking about Inglis receiving treatment for an injury earlier today? Must admit I wasn't paying too much attention to their discussion at the time.

** Agree that Marnus & Smith have cemented their positions with their batting in this Test.

Are you giving McSweeney a chance in the middle order. He never was an opener.
Probably not for Sydney.

We need 5th bowler, so Webster for Marsh.
Richardson for Starc.

For Sri Lanka, would strongly consider opening with Head & Konstas, which allows McSweeney to bat #5.

Highest winning last innings runs chase on the MCG in the last 50 years is 231... but this does look a reasonable pitch... not a road like some think.

Reckon we would want minimum 300+ if we can get there.

Yeah... but that list was all 1-for and 2-fors, suggesting that the chasing teams did it easily.

This pitch hasn't deteriorated one iota since the first ball was bowled on day 1. It's still a wonderful pitch for batting - if it's not the brilliance of Bumrah bowling at the other end.

The run rate has slowed over the Test, so won't be as easy to chase on the last day.

Bottom line is history will need to be made for India to win.

Third innings s**t shows are just ingrained deep into this team, lost count how many times they’ve had collapses in the 3rd innings of a match that has either thrown away a position of strength that they’ve had to claw their back to or has compelled them to a loss they maybe could’ve avoided.

It’s not that new either can probably mount a case the main core of this of the Test team for a whole generation has always seemed to lose a bit of concentration, let things drift at times and find ways to shoot themselves in the foot the longer a Test match goes on.

It's amazing how this team finds new ways to choke the BGT.

There is also air of familiarity to it as well though as they do also seem to make the same mistakes in the same conditions over and over again as in the previous series.

Why this sort of pitch was prepared at the MCG again also has to be questioned, in no way has it helped or suited Australia to win a must win match, stinks of the MCC/Cricket Australia wanting to maximise attendance and dollars.

Khawaja plays, but retires.

Starc and Boland seem to have niggles and will need to show something in the second innings so you feel comfortable they can turn it around.

Marsh is gone for Webster, as I think we'll want some bowling options.
Starc probably still plays even if he shouldn't.

Boland will play.

Don't really want to give any credit to the best fast bowler of this generation??

I saw that graphic too.

Day 1 - Australian batsmen making hay
Day 2 - India batsmen making hay
Day 3 - India tailenders, not specialist batsmen, with Australian bowlers mostly bowling short rubbish at them
Day 4 - Bumrah at his finest

There is NOTHING to suggest that this wicket is getting harder to bat on, or that it is any less of a road than it was on day 1. Bumrah has just been magnificent.

Nah, the pitch is harder to score off now compared to day 1 & 2.

Not saying it's difficult, but is harder.

Run rate is evidence.

Bumrah is an all time great yes, but Australia has found ways to be in these positions without Bumrah as well.
They have at times for sure, this series though.... its largely been when that man has come on to bowl.

TBH i think the biggest issue long term has been an inability to bowl out the tail
