Well we won the series but is there any concern we have one player under the age of 30 in our test side and that player is 19.
Yes... and no.

30 is the new 25, as far as cricketers are concerned. Having said that, we do have a large number of players who are rapidly approaching the end of their careers - Khawaja, Smith, Lyon, Starc and Hazlewood will all probably retire after next year's Ashes (assuming they make it that far).

Labuschagne is young enough to play for another 5 years, if he can regain his lost form. Head, Webster, Cummins and Carey still have several years left on the clock.

Then there's Green and McSweeney, who are both under 30 and could/should come back into the side.

Murphy and Kuhnemann have been added to the squad for Sri Lanka, in what could be an audition for Lyon's position in the team.

We seem to have a conveyor belt of quality quicks. It's the lack of decent batting talent in the Shield which is most concerning.

How much of the bowling dominance was due to the pitches - and how much was due to the new Kookaburra balls with the more pronounced seams?

Obviously having badly out of form batsmen, and some seriously good bowlers (who were able to take advantage of the ball and conditions) were also factors.

At the end of the day, the batting of both sides was mostly poor. The difference was the depth of the Australian bowling attack. India had the best bowler, but his support acts were average to poor; Australia had quality in depth, with Boland an outstanding replacement when Hazlewood got injured.

Combined side of the series...

1 Jaiswal 391 @ 43
2 Rahul 276 @ 31
3 Smith 314 @ 35
4 Reddy 298 @ 37; 5 @ 38
5 Head 446 @ 56; 2 @ 27
6 Carey 216 @ 31
7 Jadeja 135 @ 27; 4 @ 51
8 Cummins 159 @ 20; 25 @ 31
9 Starc 18 @ 28 (lucky over Siraj & Lyon)
10 Bumrah 32 @ 13
11 Bolland 21 @ 13
Cummins was 25 wickets at 21. Take out his poor preparation in the 1st Test where he took 3/150, the 22 wickets came at 17 and would have been MOS with also his important runs if not for Bumrah having an insane series with the ball. I would have Webster at 7 despite him playing 1 Tests compared to Jadeja's 3 but score only 40 run less and Jadeja didn't do much with the ball (although spinners didn't have much impact for the entire series).

Sadly they are probably all good enough to make runs against England at home.

just feels stupid to leave it until then
In Test cricket there's only 2 series that matter.

We've just played one, and that's the other one.

We need to find 3 fast bowlers and a spinner, Boland isn't a long term answer. And we need another opener (maybe 2) and 2 middle order bats.

Green could fill 2 of those roles should be able to stay fit

Nice series win.
Thought Webster was good and Boland was great, does he become a starting player now ?
Our batting generally was very hard to watch

The most disappointing thing for me for the whole series was the pitches.
It looked like Cricket Australia asked all the curators to have green tops.
3 day Tests are terrible

About half the team will be eyeing off an Ashes swansong
I don't think many play the next Ashes.

Khawaja i doubt it.
Labuschagne would need to find form, but at the moment would be a no.
Smith found form so likely.
Marsh never again for Tests.

We cannot play the usual 4 bowlers for all 5 tests. There will need to be rotations.

Is Boland now in front of Hazelwood?
Starc shown he stugges to play 5 tests so need someone like Johnson.
Lyon also shouldn't play all 5.

Marnus needs to start next Shield season in form to cement a spot IMO.

Then there's Cam Green and how he returns.

If he can play and what's more, bowl, then the ability to rotate the quicks grows. We should do it anyway, but if you've got 2 all rounders who can bat top 6 and bowl good overs then you might as well utilise that.

Spencer needs to stay fit, long form cricket has always been a struggle for him over time. Buckingham, Richardson and O'Neill would be in the mix but again 2 of those 3 are injury prone.

If Hunt continues his form in the second half of the Shield season, he has to come into consideration. His main knock is his poor second innings scores.

Smith doesn't have a lot of time left, so his spot is wide open to McSweeney once he finishes up.

There are 3 tests between now and the first Ashes test. Im going to put it out there that I think Konstas will be moved down the order and we may even see someone McSweeney back and there is talk of Bancroft.

Could be something like

1. McSweeney
2. Bancroft
3. Smith
4. Konstas
5. Head
6. Webster

Bancroft is in the squad for Sri Lanka, so he's definitely in the selector's minds.

Inglis is the other batsman in their plans, given that he was the reserve batsman for the India tour (until he got injured).

Think you are confusing Handscomb with Bancroft.

McSweeney isn't an opener & Green will be in our side.
