Culina: AFL supporters who dont embrace football are "insecure in their code"

If Soccer ever becomes the No.1 sport here, I would firstly throw up, and then secondly, leave the country.

I prefer watching a sport that generates scores in at least double digits, and if that makes me "un-australian" then so be it.
Well it already is the most played football code here, so it's pretty popular

I hate the promotion of soccer in Australia. Almost forcing us to assimilate to the European prima donna sport. We are Australian. Rugby and AFL are our codes because blokes putting their body on the line for eachother is what we like to see. Not pansies taking sickening dives (although this is creeping into AFL). Soccer can **** off as far as I'm concerned, we don't have to be like everyone else, the sports that this country grew up with are superior, and the rest of the worst doesn't know that!

What was the average crowd to a Syndey F.C. home game this year? 12,000? What about Melbourne? Over 30,000?

Face it, Sydney hates soccer, Melbourne loves it, and it eats at you. Sydney is a trashy city that couldn't care less about sport, Melbourne on the other hand is perhaps the worlds most sports loving city, and even they can't really stomache soccer.

rubbish. absolute rubbish. It's true that sydney people are generally less active with sport that melbourne. But to suggest they hate soccer is crap. It's easily the most participated football sport here, easily. AFL has worked tirelessly for 20 years to to get half decent crowds, but if you live here, Rl is no 1, and next on the radar is Sydney FC. The reasons for the aveage crowds compared to Melb is the reason that you suggest, ambivalence towards spectator sport. in general. If you go to swans games like I have since the beginning here, you have the appreciation that it's mainly attended by women, north shories and expats from Vic.
By the way, i'm happy to say Sydney is the best city in Australia, and proud to live here

Shoved down your throat? That's hilarious ... Have you looked at AFL media coverage from a non-AFL supporters point of view lately? now THAT is shoving it down your throat.

Yes AFL is more popular, but not so much as to make the current levels of AFL media saturation make sense.

this is very true

Australians don't understand how big this is: Culina
``We're locked into rugby league and the AFL over here. We think we're the best in the world, but not even 20 million people follow AFL or rugby league.

``I'm a big fan of rugby league and AFL, don't get me wrong, but football - our football - is played in places like China with a population of 1.3 billion people, Indonesia with 245 million people and Japan with 130 million or something.

McDonalds is popular too. That doesn't mean what it serves up is any good.

I accept soccer as a sport and accept that people like it, just don't expect me to.

Soccer has as much chance of superseeding AFL as it does NFL in the USA.

I think it is Culina who is insecure about his code in Australia. I don't understand why soccer has a pre-occupation with AFL. They have a summer season and have little real competition during this time of year as a domestic sport.

Personally I don't mind soccer, however as a domestic competition it will never supplant AFL.

I like soccer. Quad injury has just ended my school season abruptly for me, but i like it.

Honestly though anyone who 'emrbaces' games like the FA cup final for instance are NUTS.

Haw v StK was the worst game ever and it was better than that soccer game. Cant believe i stayed up for that and Hewitt losing again

In my view, this is a poor argument, because people clearly like Mcdonalds despite claims of objection by many. Who would go consistently to sporting contests despite the certain believe that what they are watching is something that is no good?

I think many would argue AFL has a pre-occupation with soccer, and for a good reason too

Dunno what this bloke is talking about. I embrace Football constantly. I have a membership in my Football team, and I go to the Football to watch my Football team most weeks. Football is embraced by a quarter of a million people PLUS every week throughout winter. Football is celebrating being embraced by Australians for 150 years next year, possibly with a State of Origin Football carnival. Football is the 3rd highest drawing per game competition in the world, averaging around 35,000 per game going to watch Football. This bloke is off his rocker if he thinks Football isn't embraced by Australians....

Even being an Everton supporter i can safely say

La Liga>>>>>Serie A>>>>>>>

In terms of quality of football that is.

I think La Liga and the Premiership are comparable and Serie A a distant second at this moment. Spanish football can be the most aesthetically pleasing. That's not to say there are no quality teams in the Serie A - the Milans, Juventus next year, Roma, Fiorentina and Lazio on their day. When I was growing up the Italian league was the strongest, but I don't think that's the case any more.

Actually it's a very good argument. It's saying that just because something's popular, doesn't mean it's nay good. Didn't realsie it was that hard to understand? Obviously it's based on peference too and if you like it more, then fair enough. There's nothing wrong with that of course. However we're sick to death of people telling us to 'embrace' soccer as The World Game™ when we don't find it very interesting at all.

Anyway, when you look at it, soccer doesn't compete against any other sports in the countries that it's most popular in. In those countries it's either soccer or it's pretty much nothing. In all the European countries it's basically all soccer, apart from a few hardy souls who want to play RU. In England it has pretty much nothing else to compete against. There's are RU and RL competitions that have a fair amount of popularity, but nothing on the scale of soccer.
In Ireland, Gaelic football and Hurling are much more popular sports than soccer. Why? Because it's their indigenous game and they're much faster and more exciting games to boot.
Here, AFL is the no.1 league, followed by RL then a toss-up between A-League and RU. Why? AFL and RL are faster, higher-scoring and more exciting to watch.
In the US, NFL is the most supported sport, followed probably by the NBA, then Baseball (BB not relevant in this case). Why? They're either faster and higher scoring (NBA), or they're much more tactical and interesting to watch (NFL). NFL games go for a long time but once you understand the rules, they're really quite good to watch.

These are the reasons why soccer will never supercede these sports in said countries. The incumbent sports are generally high scoreing, fast and exciting to watch. Soccer, whilst itmay be interesting on occasion, is not a consistently exciting sport to watch. There may be only one or two passages of play a game that only last for a couple of seconds that are actually exciting. The way the sport is, it just isn't possible for games to be exciting for the majority of the match.

Watched a bit of the South American leagues when I was over there during summer and they were pretty good to watch. A lot faster ball movement than the EPL made it a lot more interesting.

You must be what... 11 or 12? Probably struggle in school, not very many friends? Do you get bullied much, wait of course you do, you're one of the most unlikable dimwits I've ever seen. Kids would be lining up to thump you. :thumbsu:

Yep, and his mummy wouldn't let him play contact sport either.Hence his intense hatred of any manly sport or their supporters.

Oh dear.

What are you, Borat? Yes, you're a big man because you watch a bunch of tight short bogans fumble over a ball. ;)

Manly sport, FFS.
