CW on Laidley's position

That makes sense, unless Freo or Melbourne start sniffing around.
If we beat Freo this week, we're playing finals.

When can they start sniffing around? Until the second week of September?

I know they'll contact Nixon beforehand, but they can't actually physically interview Laidley until he's done with us. For them to get Laidley to hold out on an offer from us, they'd need to offer a significant money increase I would think, they'd be mad to do that without interviewing him.

And he's no Matthews or Blight, they won't grab Laidley on reputation alone.

So at the same time we're playing finals, Melbourne, Fremantle and Carlton will be looking for a coach. They start canceling each other out, racing to sign a coach before the other does.

If we play finals, it all fits together, because we'll be keen to sign him, and the others will be busying elbowing each other out of the way for Sumich (Freo), Voss (Melbourne), etc.

Didn't Nixon say he had his first discussion on Dean's contract with the club last week on Footy Calcified? Look for Dean to be re-signed in about 6 weeks time.

By and large I agree, he's exceedingly unlikely to sign or even come close to signing before our season is officially over. But the "sniffing around" I referred to was including preliminary talks, etc, well prior to interview or offer. We might want to tie him up before he has the opportunity for serious talks elsewhere.

The Oz today says Freo's board are keen on getting Daniher back as their senior coach. If that turns out right and the drums keep beating for Voss at Melbourne, things will get simpler for us.

Good assessment. Can't see Laids at Carlton or Essendon and don't think any other coaches are in danger.

As much as the $$ Dean will be paid will be a deciding factor, I think it's as much to do with the resources he has at his disposal. he won't leave us for Melbourne, of that I'd be almost certain, but Freo might be a different story. If that's his bag, it's his loss. You can't buy the shit that's obviously endemic at our club. I really believe that.

So do I. Looking at it from a pov removed from the club, I think it would be a massive mistake for his career to leave. It really would.

Yep.

Just ask Deni$.

Talking with a club official, he seems to think that Dean will be given a one year extention on his contract. He also said that Donald McDonald in his new role had been a really big help, he was saying that the last couple of years Dean Laidley was at logger heads with Tim Harrington when he was working alot closer with him.
Will be interesting to see if Dean is approched by other clubs come silly season...

A one year extension would be the perfect scenario IMO and I would give it to him in the next couple of weeks - but I doubt he will accept one year.

Maybe we are holding our nerve so he can see that there are no other options to ensure a one year deal (with the obvious risk that there are other options and we lose him).

If that is true, and with all respect I doubt, is that they've give him only a one year deal. Coaches have to be given 2-3 to give them time and security, and the club stability. A one year contract just puts so much pressure on him and the players.

And I don't think Laidley will have to get approached for other jobs, I think Nixon will be whoring him out to everyone.

Brett Ratten will be appointed to lead the Blues me thinks. The two burning questions are whether JYD will revert to his defensive style (which I thought subtly crept back on Sunday):( against an inept team and the second burning question is how much are North willing to part with...will JYD be in the Top 8 of highest paid coaches as Ricky Nixon has indictated that he is at least DOUBLE the price...

My take...offer JYD 2 years. Why? the need to get us into a GF or c-ya later. To give JYD 3 years, gives him a wasted season buffer...

Walls was on 6pr(Perth) last night and said that Laidley is not to popular with the hierarchy. He believes the club is doing the right thing by waiting to see how the year pans out.Said clubs fall in love to quickly with the coach when the team is having a purple patch.

One year extension??? That doesn't feel or sound right for either party. Winning a final, perhaps reach PF and I think Nixon will have all the leverage that he needs. North are doing the right thing by holding off. JYD is only doing what you would do in his situation. It all comes down to MUSCLING the CREDITIONALS with strong wins in the run home.

Club members are the big winners.(I hope) Media /critics (big losers). :thumbsu:

Denis!!

Where have you been mate?

Would love to say reading the news but didn't get the gig...
I look on here most days, but have not been posting.

What are your thoughts on the contract situation?
I think I posted in another thread on it, but I can't see a situation really working out where we are playing finals (meaning we'll definately want to keep him) and have him fielding offers from other teams.

You would think that Ross Lyon's performance at St.Kilda and the decline of the Swans will reflect poorly on Longmire. It might be unfair, but there will be a perception that the "tempo footy" game plan has gone by its use by date (and not too bloody soon either).

?

IMO, Laidley has implemented tempo footy in every match we have played this year.

This is the reason we never blow sides away.

I, for one, have added up all his crosses and ticks over the past 5 years and found him severely wanting. We are not talking about Ron Barassi here. Laidley is in no position to dictate to the club regarding his position. Personally, I would only award him a one year extension, if any.

1) CW justifies why abortions are legal - fancy having to reproduce that.

2) The way things are going along nicely on field and looking like getting better ATM I don't see why we should lose Laidley for '08. He has got a bunch of young kids improving week after week. From where i'm sitting things are on the up like our team.

3) I like The Horse but as a coach - no way - why should he take over the gorund work that has been put in motion and risk stuffing it up. He's been in Sydney too long iMO.

A few months ago I posted that I would sack him once it became obvious that we couldn't make the finals, I think I said something along the lines of that being as little as two weeks away if results went the wrong way.

So now I'll do a total turnaround and say that once it becomes obvious that we will make the finals I think a two year extension will be in order. I wouldn't wait until the end of the season, and I wouldn't have the condition of winning a finals game (such a big decision to rest on the result of one game).

What a turnaround though, and for me a very pleasing one having copped a bit last year in my support for Laidley.

I'm not sure this really is of relevance, but thought I would add it anyway.

There has long been a rumour around Perth, given credential by more than one board member, that the WCE hierachy thinks extremely highly of Laidley, and has in fact quietly given him an open invitation to join the WC coaching ranks if and when he sees fit, as an assistant.

The WCE assistants are not far behind some of the lower paid head coaches $$ wise.

Nixon would know this, gives him a little more clout.

Why would he go from a head coach to an assistant just for more money?

Interesting you should say this Genesis.

Someone got on the radio the other day saying that Dick Pratt had flew to WA to try and tempt Worsfold into coming back to Carlton. Automatically I thought if WC lost Worsfold (which would be 100-1 in my opinion) WC might like to see how keen Laidley was to go home knowing that his coaching rep over there is far better than here.

One would think Sumich is front runner if Worsfold calls it quits, however unlikely that is?

btw there are also the same rumours about Carlton and Paul Roos which leads me to think there isnt much truth in the rumours.
