G. Ablett Jr
Debut in 2002 as small fwd, turned 18 that year.
Moved to midfield in 2007, turned 23 that year.
Turned 29 in 2013.

Cyril
Debut in 2008 as small fwd, turned 19 that year.
Hawks fans waiting for move to midfield soon, however only turned 24 in 2013.

It is common knowledge that Cyril has had a bad run with hamstring injuries and has delayed his progress into midfield to give the Hawks the clearance edge. However, he only turned 24 last year and his best footy is still ahead of him. I look forward to years of more (and consistent!) Cyril magic.

I don't think injuries can be taken into account when assesing the ability of a player. Fact is that his consistent relatively high placing in the Best and Fairest shows that internally, his individual efforts when he is on the park are fairly spectacular and fairly consistent. You talk about undeserved superlatives but which of them does he not deserve? If you could take one player as a small forward into a big game, who would it be? One player to make a tackle stick and make your opponent pay? One person to sprint to a ball and win a one on one and run away with it? Heck before McEvoy came I'd suggest he was even be the best overhead mark in the team. Injuries have prevented him from building a tank and being involved in more contests, but the guy is so damn effective whenever he's near the ball that he doesn't need to have it too many times to have a profound impact throughout a game. Look back to is AA season and you will be hard pressed to find a match where he didn't play very well, I can recall only 2 or 3 throughout the season before he went down. A lack of possessions doesn't lead to inconsistency, poor performances do, and Rioli doesn't have many.

You say he is vastly over rated. By who? How do they rate him and how do you rate him?

Over rated by many Hawthorn supporters and sections of the media. In terms of ability, he's as capable as anyone running around. I disagree with your comments regarding consistency, he's got a long way to go in this regard. The difference between his best and worst is vast. I think those who over rate him do so based on potentially what he may deliver over the next 5 or so years rather than what he has delivered to date.

hm i love him just as he is.....................

I grew up watching league...still love it.....................but Rioli is no more fit for nrl than I am. Look at those marks................... there is no call for that in NRL for the most part,,,,, whereas marking the ball is integral to AFL...and in NRL small guys get squashed

but I do rather like the thought of a team of Riiolis and Plattens...imagine that

no doubt Ablett is considered the better player.. But if there was a loose ball and Ablett and Cyril were fighting for it.. who you reckon would win most of the time? Or say Ablett had the ball and tries run away from a Cyril tackle? Or Cyril with the ball and Ablett has to somehow chase him down?

Most of the time? Probably Ablett. He has better core strength and fend off. Cyril wouldn't make it easy for him though.

I reckon Cyril has a way better impact on games that his stats suggest. I rate him as one of the most skillful I have seen but realise that he has different abilities to most of the guys we class as champions.

He was rocked by the death of his uncle Maurice and Sebastian 'Sibby'.....hard to say if this impacted his performance for the worse or better?

But yes, what a freak of the game he is......pure magic!

When Cyril gets the ball, I just shake in disbelief.

Lets hope 2014 is his best ever :)

It sounds kinda dumb but it would be handy if he was 'smarter' around goal. He's got the ridiculous shots worked out but 30m out on a slight angle is no 'gimme' & he passes off some shots that he couldn't miss himself if he tried. I know it's part of the development process & some players add to their game over time, but I'd want to increase his goal kicking efficiency & his shot selection before I worried about his fitness.

-warning- lot of repeating and lot of Rioli love , so for those wholl waste their time reading what i wrote, , It is about how Rioli could be the best player in the league pretty much and also my feeling of how Rioli not getting as many possies as others but being twice as dangerous, and yeh his potential and ability to rise to the top by even having less possies than Judd with more impact (Judd is prob the most impactful midfielder from the least amount of Possies per game as all the others) than stop reading here hehe.. otherwise you might berate me after reading it up and call me a Rioli nuthugger or whatever..So no need to read below i guess, but for ppl who think Rioli can be the best, ive stated a few points in which i think will help argue that point for him and how Rioli getting less Possies but more impact the better.. Dont need that many possies, goals can come from 1 tap to a bursting midfielder who passes it inside 50 or kicks a running goal, which is 2 possies max and 1 hitout for 1 goal

if Rioli really applied and in his mind he is set to be a half back flanker or a small defender, could he be the best small defender in the league? Several Rebound 50's and 5+ tackles per game and also imagine he could keep his opponent goalless! imagine with his defensive ability in a defensive mind set, could he make some kind of history as keeping all his opponents kick the least goals against him in a season or bring the ultimate rioli version 2.0 defender style, keeping every single opponent he is on goaless for the whole season.. If he has the ability listed above, would you consider him to play as a defender? Do we have enough small forwards ? Pops and Bruest and Wangers and Langers can kick a goal, plus Roughy and Guntons agility at ground level helps a lot, and with Tim Obrien / Sphanger waiting in the wings with Obrien playing against Brissy this week, It looks like they could actually afford to not play Rioli as a forward compared to if he played for most teams he would be their number 1 goto guy as a small forward.. Quite amazing that Hawthorn forward line aint it.. even tho we lost the best Forward in the AFL..

So instead of playing Rioli as a forward who plays part time midfield to a running rebounding LOCK DOWN defensive onslaughter of Rioli with stints in the middle.. We could afford to play him there i would say (unless push comes to shove and the man is needed in the forward half to play half forward? hehe with stints in the midfield.. Everything he does he should have stints in the midfield, and i expect nothing less than at least 1 or 2 burst from centre bounce into a running clearance str8 into goal or pinpoint pass to the talent pool that is the hawks forward line.. Damn that just makes me want him to play midfielder even more.. imagine he does that say like 4-5 times a game.. each resulting in a goal by him or a goal assist
(score assist if the douche misses after Riolis exciting play), u could say that Rioli is still sort of playing forward even tho he starts in the midfield.. With a burst of speed he can do wjhat forwards do best in scoring goals and giving goal assists, maybe the logical choice and as ridiculous as it sounds, he is playing as a forward in the centre bounce or 50/50 ball ups, thats a forward right, hehe doesn't matter where he starts.. If hes in the centre bounce and statistically and visually he is a forward that just plays up the ground a lot more than any other forward (that is a forward that isn't pushing up to get a touch). If he gets the ball than bursts forward to half forward to pass off to a teammate in inside 50 or going all the way himself from outside 50... would that mean Rioli has created his own position!.. The midforwardfielder position. a player who can get the ball 100 metres away and turn it into a goal assist or a goal himself by bursting the first 20-30 metres and steady a shot for goal.. Tell me who is better than him to invent a new position in the game...Not like a Roughy who can play every position but he plays it to the position and Buddy almost created his own position too.. High Centre Half Full Forward that roams the ground and kicks goals from way outside 50 plus more often then not in a contested ball situation and a crumber (since he cant mark for crap) at 196cm and boots it 80m over the fence while running away from opponents and playing on (damn i wish we had more players who could do that, or even 1 forward with that ability but from what i can see only Buddy has that ability)..

The man Rioli is a unique player with set skills that not even another player possess, such as being a small forward who is more agile than midfielders, better one on one players than midfielders, extremely dangerous in Stoppages and even more Dangerous at the centre bounce, ferocious enough over the ball to be considered an inside mid, with the pace and agility to be an outside mid... all the way playing as a forward kicking goals or pass em to teammates (one of the top goal assists players since he started playing) plus a phenom defensively being one of the best tacklers in the game for a man his size (heck im even taller), which should transfer into becoming a great lock down defender who also can rebound from 50 in an attacking way (it has not been proven that he can do both, but i dont think that is out of the realm of possibility that he can lock down an opponent while also being a rebounding play makers off halfback). Also i don't see how he couldn't also play on the wing with his speed and running like Isacc Smith type and cause havoc there too..HMm what other skills too.. anticipation and football smarts that is elite, with at times (not all the time) a very good disposer of the ball and the ability to kick freakish goals.. Would like him to be able to kick straighter for goal tho, especially on the run on tight angles from around 30 metres out as he has missed a lot of gimme goals and that type of goal is the one he seems to miss the most as well as the snaps from the same area if he decide to snap inside of a drop punt.. So he is an elite kick and also a known Goal Kicker, elite in kicking goals that are very low percentage to get a goal from.. anything else i missed? Good in the air for a man his size and could out mark a defender his size with his great leaping ability too (hes catlike at everything and we know how good of a spring a cat does have hehe). So he can take a screamer basically.. Also very quick thinking in the field and can see the play unfolding faster than someone else in his shoes and his vision and ability to choose the best option even if he has to rip out an elite kick to pass it to the person (with the ability to do so not just try it but do it). Good handballer too? hehe, i think thats pretty much all his skills covered, pls dont hesitate to tell me if i missed out or if you think he doenst have a particular skill(s) that i have said he has.. I will prob not agree but a good Hawk supporter who is more pessimistic about Rioli can maybe pick out his flaws more than i could..

If not needed to play Forward, and to become an elite Backmen seems as easy as walking for a person like Rioli with his defensive abilities.. Can't argue putting him down back if the Forward line is just fine without him.. Maybe just maybe he could become a majority midfielder in the next few rounds as a Midfielder who goes back and forward (could get a license like Hird had so he can go anywhere on the ground), That will have covered our need for an elite midfielder who can play inside and outside for 10 years or so.. therefore cementing 1 spot in the midfield like how Mitchell or Sewell or Lewis or even Hodge all being first choice midfielders but being the only player who is an inside/outside midfielder (like a Dangerfield or An Ablett, to another point.. damn i wish we can get Danger but thats another topic), and special mention to Bruest too who is tough inside and outside witjh his pace and his rudgy background.. Rioli could become our number 1 midfielder.. which is scary, and ill put aside the fact that he can get injured.. If he doesn';t get injured while trying to run around like a midfielder... He would be a midfielder who pushes forward or back, but maybe he shoulnd;t be allowed to run around so much, just to dangerous positions and stay there for a bit instead of running up and down the ground non stop plus he will either get tagged or get a small defender and not many people got the balls to run off him forward, which would mean he would do a lot less chasing up the ground and stick to running down opponents in short bursts of speed over 30-50 ish metres, and in theory he would get more possessions.. if he had +5 over his normal season average he would get almost BOG in most of those games.. 20 possies from Rioli is deadly enough, but if he got 25-30 possies, forget about it. ANd Rioli isn't much of a getting quick possies with a 1 - 2 handball and easy handball receives so his 25-30 possies, 90-95% of them are actually important possessions, which i dont think any other AFL player can do or is doing ATM.. Most of the 30+ possy players like Swan Pendles Ablett and Mitchell getting 30 possies isn't as influential as Rioli getting 10 or more less possies then them..

If he plays to his potential, the ultimate midfielder could be born! A man who can get almost as much possies as say a Judd and do a lot more damage.. which would be amazing considering people think that while Judd doesn't get 30+ possies a lot, his 25-30 possie games are rated higher than most of the other 30+ possies from the other ball magnets in the league.. Rioli is more damaging then Judd with less possies.. I just came to terms with the fact that people dis Rioli for getting very low possies but agree his possies are more dangerous than almost anybody else.. I tend to think of that as either a compliment for the fact that a man who gets less possies but more influence means everytime he gets the ball, he would tend to make that possy into a damaging stat... So if Rioli has a ball in hand, he does the most damage if you do the math of his influence compared to his possies per game.. So that actually works out in our favour that he takes so little possies to affect a game whereas a possie from him could be a goal / GA / Rebound 50 / kick or handball to make a play / a possy to get the Hawks out of trouble of being in defense or rebounding to offense. So i no longer get pissed off ppl saying he doenst get enough possies.. For a man who is a Top 10 AFL superstat list of best players on afl.com (hes 11 now but he was in top 10) with that little possies and had to be put into the category of a midfielder instead of a forward that he has been cos if they labelled him as a forward, he would be so far above Franklin stat wise that itll look a bit ridiculous, has him as the AFL's 10th best midfielder.. I dont think everyone who says Rioli doens't get enough possies is pretty much wrong, the way to describe him is if he gets more possies per game than that would rocket him up into one of the best in the game who would have more influence than Judd possies by possie comparsion. So now i think when ppl say he doenst get enough possies.. i say yeh he doesn't get enuff to be the top 5 players in the game, but if he had 5+ more possies per game, he could easily be in the top 2-3 players in the game. My backup is the AFL superstat list that has him as the 10th best player stat wise.. So if you can think of it that way, a possession from him is the best possession in the AFL considering how many he gets now and the ranking he is on.. So let ppl say he doesnt get enuff of it.. in my head thats praise that a man who doenst get enough of the ball can tear a game apart without getting much of the ball, dominate teams without getting much of the ball.. like Nic Nat who barely gets a touch but some of his touches are great and he also has the great taps which gives him an excuse for having 10 possies a game and still be considered one of the best Ruckmen around the ground.. But Rioli has more damaging Possie per possie rate than i would say Nic Nat, but if not he gets 5-10 more possies then Nic Nat anyway so no big deal.. Its all a big compliment to Rioli when people dis parts of his game.. as u can turn it around into him being the most dangerous with the ball in the league..Can only imagine what a 25-30 possie game from Rioli would look like.. 25-30 possies and if he was on fire.. 10 tackles 4-5 goal assists, 5+ or around goals, either 10 i50 or 10 rb50 or bit of both, a few contested marks, 5+ bounces in the game and if played in defense to keep his opponent goalless and out of the game (imagine he took Le Cras to the cleaners and kept him goalless), or Cause a tagger/defender to lose their confidence and to seem helpless all the while bringing his teammates into the game like no other player and the intangibles like the morale the team would have seeing him on fire and the confidence he would bring and the fear of god to opposition teams.. This man is almost the complete player.. He has no weakness and some of his strengths r top of the class in the AFL, could turn him into the most targetted player by almost every single team the hawks play...

Well sorry to those who think im pumping up his tyres a bit, but i really see him like that (potentially the best player) and because im a Hawk fan i rate him higher than others i guess, But yeh im not blind.. If i can see Cameron as a future goal kicking CHF star, than im sure everyone else can see the potential that Rioli possesses.. Theres nothing Rioli cannot do in the football world, and his athetlic ability is suited to AFL footy and his a footy athlete genius, like Buddy is the best athlete when it comes to footy whereas Nic Nat is the best athlete in AFL footy but he doenst have half the nous Buddy and Rioli has on the game. Both players have AFL footy ingraved in their DNA and espically more for Rioli who has one of the most talented Footy Families there has been... If anybody can see a flaw, could you point it out? because i think the flaw that ppl say he drifts in and out of games and doenst get enough possies is NOT a flaw at all, if he dominates with 15 possies then who are u to argue he should get 30 like a Swan (a 30 from swan has the chance of not affecting the game at all).. He was on fire at the start of the 2013 season with his best game the same one he got injured from and had the long lay off.. If no injuries this year, could finally shut everyone up even tho there would still be ppl who say he doenst get enuff possies (which has been explained over and over, not enuff possies = still 10th stat ranked player in the AFL which is not logical as he doenst get enuff possies and in the game much but yet can rank so high in overall Stats) will hopefully see him increase 5+ possies per game this year (i hope) and catapult him into the top 5 in the AFL STATS but still considered overrated cause of some bs excuse and the only one left is he doenst touch it enough which is as stated above is a compliment more then a knock on him i reckon..

Am i delusional here? do you think that the things i stated are pretty close to fact and all the praise on Rioli is well deserved? pfft number 50 in sheehans top 50? hes prob number 10 ATM stat wise and i reckon hell be in the top 10 players of the 2014 season even if he doenst end up in sheehans end of year top 10, all he has to do is improve a bit and hes top 10.. even top 5, to becoming the MVP of the AFL overtaking ROughead as the MVP of the game.. a man who is probably more freakish then Buddy himself and any other player out there (or the most freakish small player) if he can stay fit and healthy and live up to the hype of getting 20+ possies a game with an occasional 25-30 possie range to being able to kick 5-6 goals easily in every few games or if defending to keep all his opponents goalless for quite a few rounds in a row and rebound better than the best out there (bursting thru the backline to open up the game totally, to bursting all the way to passing to a forward inside 50), if Rioli is our best player by the end of the season, I wouldn't see us lose more than 1-2 games, and if he can back it up in Finals, we would b almost impossible to beat... Then to turn out a dominant Norm Smith medal performance in the GF (by far getting the top votes from everyone), it would make the Hawks unable to lose no matter how hard the other team is playing.. 2008 Franklin took us to the GF,... 2014 im hoping Rioli can take us to the Top of the ladder and BOG in almost every final to actually become the best player in the GF by far (for both teams), something Franklin couldn't even do in 2008.. There wont be many ppl that will b too suprised with prob some Rioli bashers saying i told u he could do it! and finally shut every single person up about them calling him overrated.. Riolis can't be overrated.. either hes underrated or "rated" as being acknowledged as the most damaging player in the game, yes even more than Ablett himself.. Ablett absolutely dominates in a team of young up and rising stars.. but if Rioli can dominate in the Hawthorn team, could there be a chance that Rioli will have overtaken Ablett as the best player. Like if you traded Rioli to Ablett, we would be a worse team, if Rioli dominates in the number 1 team in the league with all that talent, It just doesn't really seem fair to call Ablett the best (big big call) when he can drag his team to victory almost single handedly to Rioli almost winning the game against the best teams the AFL has to offer, and to do it in finals too would just cemet his place.. I know people have given up on Riolis Potential and im talking about hawk fans, but if he lived to his potential, would u not say he is potentially better then Ablett? He has more skills than Ablett does? Imagine Rioli walks away with a Brownlow with the lowest average possession per game than any other Brownlow midfield winners, Norm Smith for absolutely ditacting the GF under his terms to Number 2. in the league behind Ablett i guess, give him few more years and hell overtake Ablett..

Yeah this is the potential Rioli has and i think he can realise that potential sooner than later, i might of pumped up his tyres a bit, but could you argue if he does the things that i stated above, first he actually has the ability to do it, that he wouldn't be the MVP of the AFL.. The first time someone won a brownlow with just over 20 possies a game (midfield comparsion of course) make him elite.. hes all grown up now so now its time for him to (HOPEFULLY HE OVERCOME HIS HAMSTRING INJURIES) live up to his expectations and take his spot as the Number 1 Hawthorn player over Franklin who has left. If Rioli is our best player this year.. might as well write hawthorn on the premership cup (if he is also easiluy the player of the finals).. and a Norm Smith from him would double stamp hawks as the champs this year..

Plz do not call me being silly or stupid, i am sort of serious, if he can do what i say he can do, nobody can stop him.. not even U!

Was listening to Daicos on SEN this morning talking up Cyril - he rates him

Sometimes we place too much emphasis on stats - just enjoy what he brings. Sure I would love it if he didn't go missing for long periods but I would also love Sam to shake a tag - can't always get what we want.

Stats are rated as such due to the evolution of fantasy football

Before dream team, stats meant bugger all

As for Mitchell, I agree he does struggle to shake a tag, but he also isn't offered half the protection players from certain other teams are
He plays it smart, rather then retaliati, he takes the opponent out of the game
Played Crowley into our hands in the grand final, and rockliff was useless when Mitch moved out of the square

Plz do not call me being silly or stupid, i am sort of serious, if he can do what i say he can do, nobody can stop him.. not even U!
