1.Kew (were just as good as WB, until killed by injuries in finals)
2.Mt Lilydale (home ground advantage is huge, also killed by injuries in finals)
3.La Trobe (a lot of new recruits, there is always a demoted team that performs well, so I pick them)
4.Albert Park (could finishes anywhere 1-5, a lot of new recruits)
5.RC (strong last year, but will need all new recruits playing the majority of games to make fiinals. Whiting a big loss.)
6.Swinburne Uni (Don't know anything about them, other than be a D3 team, wil be there abouts)
7.EP (Could be anything, capable of beating good teams, but often lose games to teams they should beat)
8.Sth Morn (Also could be anything, travel is a huge worry, but it appears they have a pretty good draw)
9.BHN (Is no news good news?? Maybe, all is quiet on this front, no recruits on the clearance page, so I rate them low based on last year)
10.Manningham ( On the improve but are starting from a long way back)
11.NB (Young team, rebuilding)
12. Chadstone (The club's had a shake up so probably rebuilding)

just read on the d3 forum that the VAFA has decided to introduce two new rules this year, one is for holding players off the ball stoppng them getting to the next contest (which i have no real issue with) he other, however, is related to rushed behinds and awarding a free kick for the action........ I for one am against it but will swallow it because we will have to, i think that it will be necessary for reserves umpires to concur before a match to discuss how strictly it will be interpreted. I wouldnt be against a gentlemans agreement to not pay the rule at all but it needs to be sorted before the first bounce to avoid bad decisions and controversies. Thoughts?

VAFA BACKS AFL RULE CHANGES IN OUR EVERGROWING COMPETITION

At the VAFA Board Meeting on Wednesday night two AFL rule changes were approved effective immediately.
At the VAFA Board Meeting on Wednesday night two AFL rule changes were approved effective immediately.
The two laws to be introduced are as follows:
a) A free kick can now be awarded for deliberate rushed behinds - the benefit of the doubt will be given to the defender;
b) Umpires to award a 25 m penalty against players who tackle, hold or make high contact against an opponent after the opponent has disposed of the football, for the purpose of preventing them from taking part in the next contest;
VAFA CEO Michael Sholly said in support of the deliberate rushed behind rule, “We believe this will lead to an even more exciting, continuous and fluent brand of football. The VAFA fully support the inclusion of both laws as it is a fundamental of our game to keep the ball in the play as the main objective. The VAFA has a responsibility to our umpires and our players who aspire to play at a higher level to learn this new skill.”
The trend of deliberate rushed behinds in recent seasons has increased at AFL and VAFA level and the board wishes to discourage this tactic.
“The VAFA tend to mirror AFL strategies whether it is defensive zones, huddles, etc, in our game play. While some might view that in the VAFA we may not see the rule as an issue, we want to be proactive and stop it before it becomes one,” said Michael.
The introduction of a 25 metre penalty, in addition to a free kick, for a player held or dragged down after he had disposed of the ball, was to head off a growing trend whereby players were being taken to ground to prevent them from being involved in the next act of play.
“The VAFA agrees with the AFL that a player has a right to contest without obstruction” Michael added.
VAFA Operations Manager Brian Goodman explained “With four weeks until the first bounce, we as an umpiring group will be diligent in educating our umpires in regard to interpretation of both these laws. We will be encouraging our umpires to enforce these laws to VAFA clubs commencing in practice matches this weekend.”
The new laws read, in full:
15.12 FREE KICK – DELIBERATE RUSHED BEHINDS
A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player from the defending Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the attacking Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of the attacking Team’s Goal Posts. In assessing whether a Free Kick should be awarded under this Law, the field Umpire shall give the benefit of the doubt to the Defender. A Free Kick awarded under this Law shall be taken at the point where the football crossed the Goal Line or Behind Line or from the relevant Goal Post.
Interpretation:
When an Umpire is determining whether to award a free kick for a deliberate rushed behind the considerations are:
· What is the player’s intention?
· Is the player contesting the ball?
· What is the degree of pressure the player is under?
· Was there a team mate in the vicinity of where the ball crossed the scoring line?
For clarification:
· Players who are contesting the ball in a marking contest or in general play may punch or knock the ball away from their opponents to prevent them from gaining possession of the football or from scoring. This will not be deemed to be deliberately rushed.
· Where a player is in possession of the football and is tackled near the scoring line, he must dispose of or attempt to dispose of the ball in complying with the laws of the game. A player will receive the benefit of the doubt in this situation.
In summary, the benefit of the doubt will be given to a defender who is under direct pressure in a contest, or whose primary objective is to spoil or touch the ball before it goes through for a goal.
15.10 (b) FREE KICKS AFTER DISPOSAL
(b) If a field Umpire is satisfied that a Player tackles, holds or makes high contact against a Player who has disposed of the football for the purpose of preventing that Player from being able to run to the next contest then, if it is a greater penalty than would otherwise be provided by Law 15.10(a), the field umpire shall award a free kick and a 25 metre penalty to that Player’s team.
The VAFA have determined to award a 25m penalty unlike the AFL’s 50, to be consistent with our current penalties.

If AFL umpires are not sure how to enforce the rule then how are D4 umps expected to handle it???
Foolish rule change for this season, the Shol-ster would've been better off waiting a year. After a season at AFL level the rule would've been thoroughly tested and interpretations have been clarified.
It definately effects how the game is played by the defenders. Without the easy option they'll be forced to throw the ball on the boot... a hit and hope proposition.

The good ones pay it as they see it. The bad ones think about it too much and only pay it in favour of the home team.
I'm being facetious, but this is roughly enough how it works out. It makes it easier for the umpires to find a free kick for those that have a lower level of integrity & for the ones who do the job as fairly as they can, it doesn't make a difference. It's just another rule to interpret.
There are certain rules that should not be introduced into suburban footy, and this is certainly one of them - VAFA ressies should be exempt, club umpires should not have to make that determination. In reality at our level we do not see the deliberate rush behind to the extent that we have witnesed at AFL level.

I'm told MTL seniors won well, while the reserves went down. Apparently MTL had 16 players unavailable for the game, looks like they are shaping up well for the season ahead.
Big crowd and some good money raised for the Fire Relief, well done to MTL & Y/Glen.

It was a great day with just under $1000 being raised at the gate thanks to the compulsary gold coin donation. With plenty of people it was a good atmosphere.
Yarra glen won the reserves match by 4 goals which was the margin at quater time, so a good match.
The seniors was a good hard at it tough contest. The Mt.L boys got the job done by 8 points in the end, although we had 12 more scoring shots.

We had 17 missing out on the match, 50/50 seniors/reserves. The best thing about the match was that our best five for the day all are new to the club and showed they are ready to go.....

We've got our first hit-out this week against West Heidelberg so it'll be a good chance to see what our young recruits have in the tank. There's surely plenty to play with. just hope training form holds up!!
Anyway, now to offer something new to D4 for anyone interested.
A couple of weeks ago, i offered a D4 tipping contest as both a way of raising money for your club and to also get some friendly banter going on here about who is the best tipster.
Anyway, i've got the spreadsheet ready to go so would like to hear from anyone interested in taking part.
Entries are $10 each with your club keeping $5 of each ticket sold.
All entrants will be required to select their winners for the season from Round 3 through to 18. So you even get a chance to do your selections on form from the first 2 rounds results.
All money will go into the jackpot from which the prizes will be paid out as following:
1st prize = 50% of pool
2nd prize = 25% of pool
3rd prize = 15% of pool
The remaining 10% will go to the club from where the winners entry came from.
All entrants will be notified of results on a weekly basis via email or on the North Brunswick website.
If anyone's interested, let me know and i'll organise to get the entry form across to you.
