So a bloke nails a teams best player like Cookson with a very late shoulder to the jaw resulting in it being broken and Cookson out for 6-8 weeks and the opposition player only gets 2 weeks.

What a joke!!!

Best players in teams had better watch out from now on cos the VAFA have sent a clear message. If you whack the best bloke in the opposition team and put them out for 6-8 you'll only get 2 weeks in return.

Almost worth doing that to the opposition's best player in the first 2 mins of a game to give your team the upper hand.

Its interesting that a player can get rubbed out on only heresay, and the fact that the umpire must have clearly seen it as he payed a downfield free kick yet he didnt find it worthy of a report and cookson played out the game!!

Guys I do not know the 2 players in question, but after making inquiries at the club it appears that both players didn't play last season and one maybe coming off a knee injury. As far as North being at BH Hawks could not confirm or deny.

I never said his jaw wasn't broken, its quite bad that it has happened to him, i was just pointing out that it seems a little funny that a bloke can get rubbed out when an umpire saw it and only paid a downfield free kick, never said cookson was acting either as you have implied.

Nah mate... no inside info here but I did hear the word on the streets from a reliable source who was at the game.

I know Cookson from a previous life and football club and although I haven't spoken to him in a while, not a good thing to have happened. I've been on the receiving end of a similar thing as what's happened to Cookson here. Not too good and takes a bit to get over.

When I saw the SM name on the VAFA website, thought I'd ask the question of Tug given he pops up on here from time to time.

exactly, "very late shoulder" there was no elbow up or not even any intention of injuring Cooksen, He actully tried to pull out but was moving too quickly to avoid collision, i agree it is unfortunate what has come of it and feel for Ben. But as Squidda said the umpire saw the bump, paid a free kick down the ground which resulted in a goal and Ben played out the game, nothing more was said or heard until Manningham emailed the league with the complaint, just wondering if Manningham would have emailed the league if it wasnt there Captain/Coach/Best Player... Two weeks a believe is a bit stiff seeing as the umpire thought nothing of it and its one clubs word against anothers, i just hope that this doesnt give Sth Mornington and Greg a undeserved reputation.

Hahaha, what a joke you would bring this up. 5 minutes before he was aparently knocked out the same bloke apprently belted one of our young 18 year olds after kicking a goal, knocking him out and splitting his head open. He headed to the doctors during the game for stiches.

I'd suggest that if you run around the field belting blokes late then dont be surprised if someone repays the favour. Both teams lost one player each, play on, eye for an eye, etc etc

My Round 3 tips.

Round 3 Tips:

Albert Park @ Sth Mornington - My Match of the Round, Both teams flying at the moment, both coming of 15 goal wins, the suspension of in form half forward Greg Pullen may be costly. an early 8 point game. South Mornington by 10 points at home.

Latrobe Uni @ Manningham - Latrobe are obviously gonna be one of the teams to beat after beating 2 strong teams already with ease, will be far too strong for Manningham expecially with Cookson out. Latrobe to win easy by 76 points.

Richmond Central @ Mt Lilydale- Another cracking game here, both teams 1-1 and will look to get the jump here, im going for a semi upset here, Richmond with a gutsy 8 point away win.

North Brunswick @ Swinburne - It seems that NB have improved that is if Kew are the same standard as last season. This will be a good game and tell us a story of Swinbourne as they have only beaten Chadstone. Im backing in Swinbourne just at home by 4 points.

Box Hill North @ Kew - Kew at home normally means an easy win, i am wondering whether they will be the same team after missing promotion last season ans last weeks game against NB tells me they may not be, unless NB have inmproved alot. BHN i think will struggle all year and will get beaten easily here. Kew by 63 points

Chadstone @ Eley Park - Having seen Chadstone first hand on saturday they will struggle and wont win a game i suggest, Eley Park on the other hand i belive will be one of the movers up the ladder this year and will smash Chadstone to hand them there 3rd straight 20 goal loss, Eley Park by 145 points.

I personally didnt see it - but someone close to me who was boundary side of the incident (20m away) said the player in question was kicking the EP player whilst he was on the ground.... IF that happened that is an absolute disgrace.

A players head needs to be protected at all costs. Word floating round is that Greg dropped his shoulder to make contact with the side of Cookson's face intentionally as witnessed by my source.

If the ball was able to make it to the player who the ball was kicked to and then Cookson was hit after that, that's late and recless and reportable. With that being the case should've been reported on the spot, purhaps its a question to the umpires as to why it wasn't.

Greg I know is a tall player and Cookson is only short, perhaps a whole foot shorter, so my question to you is how does Greg's shoulder make contact with the side of the head of the much shorter Cookson, without it deliberately being lowered to intentionally make contact.

Doesn't stack up mate... Obviously you're a SM supporter and need to take a step back and look at it from an unbiased position as I and others on this forum have done.

Benno - if that was the case then I would have thought that there would have been a bit more solidarity from your boys & world war 3 would have erupted. Personally I think it would be better not to bring this up on a forum like this unless you'd seen the incident first hand.

Apart from this one incident, which apparently went one each way, the game was played in really good spirit. The better team on the day won the game & with a better run with injuries we'd hope to give you guys a good run in the return game.

He was collected with a legal hip & shoulder from a Cobras player who was sheparding his team mate who was in the same contest and had the ball. There is a difference between the 2.

Make no mistake about it, there was no head-clash it was a clear intentional EP elbow that hit the 19 year old Cobras player behind the play as he was running in to kick his first goal in senior football. As a result the 19 year old now has 6 stitches to a deep cut above his eye and was sick with concussion all weekend.

He doesn't want to player senior football again because of the EP player. Well done, I hope you're proud.

Imagine you were the 18 year old Cobras player wouldn't you like to remember kicking his first goal in just his second senior game, but he cant because EP idiot who takes pride in belting young blokes hit him behind the play when EP were in front by 8 goals.

Agree time to move on! Saw the 'first' one, it was a late (otherwise) fair bump and they hit heads which opened the Cobras player up. Not much in it from my perspective. Didn't see the second one, so no comment!

To clarrify Cobras player was running into got, kicked ball towards open goal square and hit by EP player after he kicked.

Happy to move on as well. Just didn't like the tone taken by Benno against the Cobras saying we were crying wolf because Cookson is our captain and best player and that's the only reason we put an in an investigation. Given we've had 2 players suffer serious facial injuries in 2 weeks also justified to silence the EP tragic as well.
