i think he's pretty good now, just a bit inconsistant at time. Do you mean great, ie AA or a future Bronlow medalist?

GRRRRRRRRRRRR. Seriously, someone having a shot at "Daisy" seems to occur each week.

What has happened to Dale Thomas this year can be explained in a simple sentence;

Mick Malthouse has decided that because we have so many small/medium forwards that we required at least one defensive forward.

Dale Thomas, has performed great jobs on the likes of;

* Josh Drummond
* Chris Judd
* Andrew Lovett (second game)
* Chris Newman (did anyone even notice Newman played)

Having a solid defensive half forward is so important in today's game, and as BT has defined it "Frontal Pressure":D is vital in winning games against the top teams.

I think he's going to be a great player in 3-5.

He will take time like Leon did. I doubt he'll take 6 or 7 years like Leon did. But like Leon, you can see from now, the raw skill, flair and speed he DOES posess.

He just needs to get some size on him, and get some consistency into his game. And just keep that work rate up.

He'll be MORE than fine. There's a chance he could have a big finals series this year. That would silence more than a few critics. If he does, I'll be the first to congratulate him at the wedding I'm attending where he's in the bridal party.

He is consistent at the moment and he is doing his job, nothing to be worried about.

I can't see his kicking ever improving much though which is disappointing to say the least.

One thing you can not question is his effort. Every time I see him he is throwing his body around trying to win the football. Whether he wins it though is another question. He has the good however, IMO.

Dale's been great this year. He hasn't been taking the speckies and kicking the freak goals (although he has done this a few times) that everyone thinks he should be doing.

It's quite obvious that Mick wants him to improve his defensive side because his attacking side is great. He has also been harder at the footy than I have ever seen him play, and his tackling has improved. He has tagged opposition players and done a good job on them (Josh Drummond, Chris Judd)

Anyone that bags him now are going to have egg on their face in a couple of seasons when he starts ripping games open and influencing results single handedly.

I love watching him in the finals because he loves playing in a big games.

One of my favourite quotes from Martin Luther King Jnr is:
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

This quote suits Dale because last year against the Saints after that week with the Didak and Shaw controversy, Dale really stood up and showed that he won't quit when the going gets tough. Anyone remember that goal he kicked and the massive fist pump he gave? He showed that he will not back down in "times of challenge and controversy."

Wait until the finals and you will all see just how good he is!

Is he ever going to come good?

Season 2009 has been the development year Dale Thomas needed to have. Despite some disposal errors in the early part of the season, MM has turned him into a accountable defender able too play on any part of the ground (forward, middle, back). His defensive pressure has been fantastic often missed by TV footage - chases opposition players relentlessly often causing rushed disposals and turnovers.
Has now combined multiple skill efforts in contests ie runs to contests, tackles not once but 2 or 3 times in quick succession before taking the final clearance and moving the ball up-field.
The added defensive side to his game reeks of a true MM midfielder of the future, - when his tank and body strength increase.
Footy stats often will not show the courage and sweat that this guy puts in every week, but have a look at his opponents game and how often they have been non effective in a match.
For a guy who is often the most hated cult figure due to his hair and flair, is now becoming the most toughest and discipline team player we have got.
Great season so-far Dale Thomas.

I have always thought his kicking was good.

Do you mean his kicking around the ground or for goal or both?

Think Daisy is already very good and will go on to be great. No-one could question the man's endeavour and efforts and I have liked him a lot this year.

His ground kicking is below average at best and he is completely one sided, I still think he'll be decent though. Runs hard, breaks the lines, tackles with ferocity and it talented around the goals. He definitely has a lot more things in his favour than he does against him.

Probably unfairly compared against Pendles which doesn't help his cause.

Simple criteria for a player to be rated as good: If the ball goes near him does he make something positive happen for his team? Dale Thomas is good, if he can influence a game he will. Is he carving up the midfield, NO because that isn't his role. I mean how many possessions does he need to be rated effective? Presti gets SWFA and is up there for AA selection!! Don't change a thing Dale, and don't listen to the sheep who get their opinions from the media either. Most of them wouldn't know the difference between sh!t and a brown car anyway.

At least someone watches the footy and knows what they are talking about :thumbsu:

Is having a solid year, albeit with some shithouse games now and then.

Still holds on to the ball way too long rather than giving the first option, and still hasn't got his kicking up to par (though I do think it's improved).

When Medders goes, I imagine Dale will go back to reclaim the role he played in his first year or two, which is where he's most damaging.

I used to be a big DT doubter but I think he has improved and is now a solid contributer who can put together a very damaging 10mins. Once he gets more consistency in his game (has a tendency to go missing in games after starting well as well as the other way round) he will be great. Can't question his effort which is good considering I remember thinking he would be soft after seeing him squib a few contests earlier in his career.

I reckon his set shot kicking has improved. He is still hooking it a little bit, but it seems to be getting better. I would prefer him to kick a goal on the run than a set shot though.

He has been working his arse off this year! He gives it all he's got in each game, if he keeps this up he will get the ball easier.:thumbsu:

I don't think Thomas will reach his true potential. I believe when Collingwood drafted him with pick 2, they thought Dale would become a goal kicking wingman, similar to Peter Matera.

I don't thing he has the work rate to play midfield. He just can't string 4 quarters of good footy, even in his better games he usually has a super half a game then goes quiet in the second half.

I think the best Collingwood can hope for is a consistent half forward flanker in the Paul Medhurst mould. Even if Daisy is to achieve that level of consistency he still needs to lift his workrate.

Consistency will come when he gets more experience IMO.

Yeah it happens a bit with him. I'm at the footy and notice he touches the ball about 10 times within the space of 15 minutes and I think, far out Thomas is on fire, but then I don't really spot him. I get home and I'm always shocked to see he only finishes on about 15 possessions, even with the damaging period.

If he gets some consistency across the board and manages to stay in games and continually influence them it would go along way to making him a better player.
As has been pointed out in the thread previously though, I don't think the role he has been playing this year has really helped him. I would have loved to have seen him continue that quarter back (*cringe*; I hate it when people use that term as well) role his was playing with over the pre-season. He looked to be quite set playing as an attacking HBFer, I definitely think he has potential to fulfil the role... Probably even more-so than Cox who never to develops his defensive side, where as we have seen Thomas can do lock down roles when needed.

If all 18 players that we have on the feild at any one time did the job MM sends them out to do as consistently as Daisy does we would be sitting on at least 18 wins. If you don't think he is great (not just good) now then you'll never be satisfied.

Is he a good player already. What frustrates me is that he has the potential to be a genuine star.

I've always backed him to get there, and I still do.

The guy's been a good player for us, and he's been at about 50% of his development imo.

Is one of our more complete players.

Oh FFS he is only what 21, 22???

Already he has won us games off his own boot, and has been very influential. Next year expect him to move into the middle, but still he won't be an A-grade player.

2011 will be his year...

Look at players like Didak, Swan, they have only become elite at 25+
