Speculation Dan Houston [UFA 2027]

Not sure I’ve ever seen a trade where supporters of the potential incoming club have been so against it.

To trade two firsts for Houston with our list in its current state would literally set us back five years.

Tom Morris has been reporting on SEN this week that the asking price from Richmond for Daniel Rioli getting to the Gold Coast is 2 first round picks. He believes their picks 12 and 20 would get that deal done.

If that's the price for Rioli, theoretically Port shouldn't have trouble getting 2 first rounders (or equivalent value) in a trade for Houston.
Yeah...it doesn't work that way. GC have picks to burn and Dimma absolutely adores Rioli. We will get more for Rioli than Port would get for Houston, despite him being (arguably) a better player.

Where will pick 6 slide to after farher/son and academy pick have taken place
6 could become 10

Nothing saying Melbourne aren’t as keen on Houston as GC are on Rioli.

That being the sole reason you think you’d get more is laughable.

Melbourne hunting him for whatever reason with 4 years left on the deal. We’ll get plenty for him and rightfully so.

You don’t target a player with 4 years on a contract, who is a top 5 player at that club, without being prepared to give up something significant. Pick 6 is the starting point. No point arguing whether it’s fair or not, it clearly has to be on the table.

Melbourne don't have the draft capital that Suns have though? And suns are already guaranteed Lombard who is a top 10 prospect so coughing up an early pick is much more inconsequential to them than it is the Dees.

If both players leave I'll all but guarantee Rioli will be traded for more than Houston. No need to carry on.

Except Melbourne didn't target him, reportedly he wanted to renegotiate his contract and Port Power said no so his management talked with other clubs based in Melbourne.

Teams don’t just approach long term contracted players and then go here this is all we have take it.

if they don’t have the capital to get it done they’d quite clearly trade with another team to get that capital, or have it be a 3 team trade.

Not rocket science and pretty much the basis for most trades these days.

What? Deals fall over all the time. If Houston does want out I'm sure they'll find a way to make it work. I'm just saying using Rioli and the Suns as your precedence is not apples and apples.

You think his management didn't talked to other Victorian clubs which ended with Melbourne willing to pay what he wanted likely from the salary cap relieve from Brayshaw who signed on a big contract.
Doesn’t change the fact that they are targeting him. They know the uphill battle they will likely face. If they aren’t willing to part with at least pick 6, then the deal will probably fizzle out.

Pick 6 split with a 2nd coming back would be possible.

Not sure how they are targeting him, sounds like it’s his management who is shopping him around if anything because he wants back to Melbourne.

How do you know they're not?

The inside mail from a port poster in the know was, he was keen to go back to Victoria to start a family with his girlfriend over there. He did it quietly as he was happy to go back to Port if a deal couldn’t be done.

Saints enquired and were politely told no by Houston’s management, they are all in on Melbourne.

Melbourne apparently have a huge offer on the table $ wise and are willing to pay up trade wise to get the deal done.

On their end Adelaide may end up coughing up their first pick for Oliver and that would be on traded to Port. Or that pick is split into 2 in the teens and both of those traded to Port would be my tip.
