Absolute no comparison to Mundy or Des, i was more looking at body types.

My point was that they are all outside players who run all day but that Johnson, Mundy and Headland have superior skills.

The Headland comparison is a valid one though. Happy is an inch taller but they are both quick, outside players who look to kick long and don't take many contested marks. Dessie is better at ground level and a much better tackler but neither of them have the quick hands required to be succesful onballers IMO.

After reading that dom i see where you are coming from, although it is fair to say that neither Mundy or Des can pinch hit in the ruck.

In saying that i would put those three ahead of Gilly any day, to play a midfield role.

Although it has to be said, that some people on this board regard Mundy as soft :)

Is Gilmore in that bracket ?

I certainly wouldn't consider Gilly hard, but I've never seen him pull the handbrake. A lot of players his size wouldn't be keen to contest ruck duels but he doesn't seem to mind going head to head with guys who are 5 inches taller and 10 kilos heavier. :thumbsu:

You probably haven't seen the South Africa game versus Carlton. Headland is every chance to be our number 1 midfielder this season. His inside work was exceptional. If he was in the vicinity, we cleared the ball. Schammer and Headland combined unbelievably well.

If we are picking the best 22 for set positions gilmore doesnt come close
thats why i say he is a perfect bench player an should be on there every game(unless poor form)
Instead of putting a matt carr on bench or a small running midfielder we go with gilmore, he can do a job as a midfielder if needed, ruckman pretty much anywhere wherever hes needed he can play.
So by having him on bench we got a multi positionable player instead of a specialist player who can only fill 1 role.

I think harvey wont put up with the lack of focus an effort from fremantle that has plagued them.
Only thing that worries me is with so many tough nuts on the coaching panel, we may be going to play the game too hard and that will end up in free kicks to the other teams.
8 out of 10 times umps see abit of rough hard football an they will give free kicks because they want the game to become soft.

Yeah incase u cant tell about this noob yet I hate how soft the game is becoming and how over umpired it is.

I haven't seen the SA game, so am interested to hear that he was played in that role. However, no matter how well he did in it, I don't think Headland as a bottom of the pack player is the best use of his skills. He needs to have that ability and be encouraged to use it when required. But a line breaking mid-fielder who receives the ball from the likes of Hasleby, Carr and Schammer is the go for Headland and the team's needs.

What Headland, Mundy, Johnson and Gilmore do have in common, is that they are long, accurate kicks. Gilmore tends to travel a bit too high, and he is very one sided with his kicking. But his kick is definitely a weapon. Add into that group Black, and we have a fair armoury of players with penetrating kicks that can make our forward line lethal, and contribute to the scoreboard as well. Anyone of them running forward from half -back/wing would create a very nervous opposition.

I saw the last quarter.

Des was quite good I thought...disposal was excellent, and he looks fitter than last year.
Scahmmer was the revelation in what I saw...always seemed to be where the ball was.

Same here only caught the 4th qtr, Schammer looked solid

I notice that you haven't offered an opinion on this topic IP.

As you are our Queen, and one our most respected posters, this humble serf requests your judgement on the young man in question.

Very nice photo as well Your Majesty.

If I may be so bold, it reminds me of when I used to play.

Only I was generally about 2, make that 3, feet closer to the ground than our Happy and about 5% as fit with 3% of his skills.:(

Forgive me your grace for my indulgence.

They're all my favourites bushie - and they all deserve a game every week. ;)

OK - that's a cop-out.

[oh and BTW - get orf it mate.... :p]

Look, I don't really know. There are times he frustrates the shyte out of me with his rabbit in the headlights look... but that has happened less and less in the past couple of years. I also think that his skills have improved as has his decision making, in that he is less likley to just drop it on the boot and bomb it in with a deep breath, eyes closed and "fingers crossed it gets to a guy in purple".

I think in a perfect world with no injuries and a full squad of 44 to choose from each week, he would get squeezed out by those who are actually better at all the different things than him... but given that it's not a perfect world and that we will have injuries to deal with, and he can play a variety of positions (he has developed into a good utility with pace, height, strength, decent skills and a "raking left foot"), then he will play a fair few games this season, and play them quite well. He will give his all each week, play like his career depends on each game he plays, and we will all be grateful for his versatility and ability to play wherever he is needed. :)

mmmm sounds almost blog like doesn't it?:D

esti, your thread on the curse of the Beacon reminded me of another curse that has been with us since the early days, and one that is the natural enemy of Daniel Gilmore - the Curse of Daniel.

Daniel Parker
Daniel Hargraves
Daniel Schell
Daniel Metropolis
Daniel Bandy
Daniel Haines

All have fallen victim to the Curse of Daniel, some more spectacularly than others. If Daniel Gilmore can break the curse, he may well find himself in the best 22.

Daniel is an awesome name, they just aren't worthy of it's greatness.
