It was Shaun, but Williams didn't compare him directly to another player.

"He's just an outstanding player and he's trained for the past three weeks, he's been doing lots and lots of aerobic stuff away from the track as well," Williams said.

"So while he's not going to play huge game time we're thinking 50 per cent of Shaun Burgoyne is probably better than 70 per cent of someone else."

Sorry guys, my bad.

With Burgoynes and the like gone, and guys like Surjan, Cassisi and Brogan who seemed to be desperate competitors who demand total effort from themselves and others, what're the chances that the spotlight has begun shining on Motlop, and instead of taking it on board, he's got his back up and basically thinks they can all get ****ed?

You have to remember when he came over there were rumblings he didn't like Laidley. So maybe there's a Laidley factor.

That video hasn't helped his ego and then our marketing campaign would have added more fuel to the fire.

So consider he's the face of our club and has the ability top to do the special things, perhaps Choco or the club wants him in the side at any given opportunity. Catch 22, pull your draw card out or keep him in to entertain the masses?

It's just that a few supporters just want to watch footballers and be entertained by football and not occassional show pieces.

I don't midn Daniel, he is often maligned, but it's obvious A) he's been rushed back and B) he isn't a key forward.

But if I am going down this tangent I may as well go to the key forward short thread :)

The problem with Motlop is he is the best player in our side if he is in form and playing consistent football. If all four of his goals went in on Sunday he would of been hailed as a match winner, and thats basically the excuse of a lot of people defending him, but when he is out of form like he is, the magic is never going to happen. Probably the biggest frontrunner in our side IMO, has almost no effect on the game when we're down.

Just need to give him a few more weeks - think he's maybe missing Tredrea's presence more than anyone else in the forward line.

...

If he isn't either kicking goal or setting them up in the coming 2 or 3 weeks then we should give him a spell in the SANFL.

:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I think this (in combo with his off-field issues) has hit the nail on the head.
Motlop will get another 2-3 weeks to turn things around. Of that I have no doubt.

He needs to find some form quickly and I'd rather he does that against Sydney this weekend than playing for the Roosters for the next month.

Chad is probably in the same boat.

Both will benefit from the mid-season break - they will not be dropped before it.

Having said that, it is our right as supporters to call for their heads when they string a few weeks of poor performances together. But in the end it is all about team balance and the experience that these players bring to the group. With a game in the balance, Chad floating across HB or pushed into the midfield and Motlop one-on-one in the goal-square are a far better prospect than any untested/unproven alternative at the moment.

Great post. Agree whole heartedly:thumbsu:

Daniel Motlop is a freakish talent, but really he hasn't been at his best since before he broke his ankle.

He just looks totally out of place out there now. If he gets a touch he tries to do something freakish - never the team thing.

It's really sad, but I think if he can't show he can change in his next couple of games, he needs to move on. He is bad for the club - we are trying to move on to tough, hard at it team orientated play. And he is the exact opposite.

And he really doesn't deserve a game this week. I will be annoyed if he isn't sent back to the SANFL to find some form.

The problem is he won't go back to the SANFL to "find some form". He'd go back to the SANFL and sook. It will be as pointless an excersise as when Peter went back to the Magpies last year.

If and when Motlop goes back, which he won't, i have a feeling we won't see him again.

Any bloke who after kicking a goal, no matter how miraculous, turns and runs down the ground yelling 'what's my name?' doesn't deserve to play AFL. Should have been dragged the moment he did it.

Lol let's not talk about arrogance and Geelong
players.......

Based on what? What a 5AA talkback caller said? The North Adelaide coach was full of praise of his work ethic and fitness after the game he played in the SANFL this year.

His attitude in AFL games has been shit this year. Hasn't looked right. Still, if he kicked the goals that he missed, I'd probably be happy with him still in the side.

He can go back to the SANFL again and find some form. Defs haven't given up on Mots.

You mean after he kicked a massively important goal against Freo? Pretty much won us the game that day.

I couldn't care how he celebrates. As long as he tackles, kicks goals, works hard and doesn't give away stupid frees.

He kicked 57 goals in a year where we finished 13th...

He isn't a frontrunner.

I agree.

Personally, I too couldn't give two sh*ts how he chooses to celebrate.:D
Especially if it is the result of a moment of individual skill/magic/luck.

Some players (in all types of sports) thrive on this. They score and the few moments after that is all about them - it's their moment of ego-driven, testosterone-fuelled glory. It can help lift them and their team. Others are more modest in their approach and are quick to congratulate their team-mates. Our sport can accomodate both (depending on the moment) - individual brilliance and/or great team play.

As long as that attitude or behaviour does not impact on his overall general team-oriented play (which is currently under question, let's not make any pretence about that).
