If your looking to stop the best opposition key forward then Talia is your man. If you want a rebounding defender then Carlisle wins.
Personally I would take keeping the best forward quiet and barely getting a kick while letting the flankers do the rebounding, rather then say Buddy kick 5+ but get 25 disposals running off him.

Nice backhanded complement to Carlisle there champ.

Personally I do like my full back stopping his opponent from scoring but I don't like how the ball gets stuck in my forward half because my defense has to play one man down when we do get the ball.

TO be honest, it is too hard to compare the two. I agree that Talia is the better man defender. However Carlisle reads the play better as a loose defender and has far superior foot and hand skills so can be damaging going forward.

All in all, if I want a full-back I take Talia, If I want a CHB I take Carlisle.

Tals has had a few good scalps this year in Franklin (no goals) Petrie (no goals) N Riewoldt (1 goal) Kennedy (no goals)

It's interesting that this comparison has come yet up again. Last year Carlisle had a great season but was ineligible for the rising star due to the report against Port, but I'm sure he and Toby Green (if also eligible) would of given Talia a run for his money, although they all would of been top 3. They are also friends, a day apart in age and have played against & with each other since they were 10 years old. As it has been well documented in this thread they are both very different players and yes Carlton & the Doggies for that matter were very silly to let them pass by. I would pick Talia as a defender & Carlisle as a forward everyday of the week and twice on Sundays. They both have done well learning their craft (especially Carlisle as he was drafted as a forward) so my opinion is I would love them both in my team and they are both so even at this stage of their careers. Maybe this time next year things may be different again.....

Might get to see Carlisle vs Talia in 2014, Hurley looks like he is going back so Carlisle could be forward.

Wow, wasn't expecting my vote to tip the scale Carlisle's way.

In terms of defending, both are supreme. But I guess I voted Carlisle because he gets more of the ball. Talia reminds me of Prestigiacomo, Carlisle reminds me of Scarlett.

Carlisle's marking ability allows him to take over games whether that be back or forward. Talia is a great role player and would be a deserved selection for AA but there's no way any AFL side would pick him over Carlisle imo.

I think it depends. If I was looking for a defender and had to pick between the two, I'd still pick Talia.

I see your point but I've always rated attacking defenders over pure stoppers. Who would you prefer Taylor or Talia?

That being said you definitely need both types although if you were starting a team from scratch I'd pick Carlisle ahead of Talia in any position.

Talia is still developing an attacking game, after all he is only 22

I'd pick Talia if I needed a defender.

What would you prefer, a gun FB, who is fairly limited going the other way, or a very good FB who can also contribute offensively and swing forward to kick goals?

Are you seriously going to tell me that Jenkins is better than Carlisle now?
I'm not saying that but Tex and JJ have got a good partnership. JJ is a athletic forward/ruck. We already have Pods and Tex crashing the packs. Not sure how a Tex/Carlisle forward line would function.
