Darren Burgess continues to determine other clubs' training programs even if Hawthorn get the credit. Hawthorn's running game isn't that pronounced, but they do hold onto the ball. But then that's our aim under Kenny too.

Yes I have noticed myself how other teams are talking about increasing their fitness and running games out etc hah. Catch us if you can.

I don't think Hawthorn are that fast, but they have a pronounced edge in their ball disposal skills that make them look quicker then they really are.

Even Matty White or Daniel Flynn can't outrun a well kicked football! :footy:

Puopolo, Hartung, Smith and B.Hill are right up there with their speed. All latter three have been part of their best 22 throughout the season, with Smith and Hill particularly damaging in the prelim and GF.

Not only are they speedy, they have elite kicks, run >16 beep tests and <10min 3kms.

I'd consider our team to be pretty quick with M.White, Polec, Pittard, Neade and Impey. However only White and Pittard would be close to that level of speed and super endurance of Hawthorn's speedsters.

THE likes of international soccer superclubs Manchester City and Real Madrid will be sending their staff to Alberton Oval to learn the secrets of the Port Adelaide Football Club’s fitness revolution.

The Power will on Wednesday launch an intensive course in in-season high-performance training as the first step in its new sports science partnership with UniSA.

The more Burgo does the more I worry we won't be able to keep him when his contract is up.
The more he can do whilst based in SA, the more likely he's to stay. At the least until we've got a flag. The fitness head overseeing a premiership side is a major selling point for everything else.

Brilliant. Off profit and loss and therefore footy deptartment cap way of paying Burgo more and establishing links with sporting clubs worldwide.

Anyone else concerned that rival clubs will fork out to attend?
Not particularly, aren't we in the third and final year of Burgo's fitness plan? If so, all other clubs will be chasing our tails while Burgo keeps evolving our fitness strategy. In any case, confidentiality clauses would preclude him fom giving away specific IP while still an employee, things like specific running drills etc. Imagine it would be more about methods, phases and recovery techniques. Plus an alignment with a major global sporting brand can only bring benefits to the club off field. Win-win as I see it

Perhaps it has been asked already, but:
To what extent does Lobbe's injury over the first 3 weeks of the season reflect a failure of our fitness professionals?

I know it must be very difficult to pick up - these players are strung like piano wires - one extra turn on the screws and they snap.
It also relies on a really effective feedback loop between player and fitness staff, in order to pre-empt injuries.
However, the last time I saw Lobbe on field he was fit and well. It just seemed to come from out of the blue.

That said the guys under him have the best teacher you could ask for.

I think that's also part of the reason that they've set up this UniSA partnership, to give more incentive to Burgo to stay with us. He's been involved with international soccer with Australia, EPL, and now is back at Port where he has commented that his family was very happy with as they want to be in Adelaide. Given that he's had a chance to experience the soccer side, the only problem would be that he may grow 'bored' of Port/AFL, but that is countered by the fact that he now has this High Performance course to work with and keep his mind busy.
Pretty sure he'll be at Port for a long time.

Wrong thread Larry.

Also Burgo has an academic bent so he can build a Uni based program the way he wants or strongly influence it to what he wants, at some point transition out of applied work with Port and become a professor of the program. The beauty is if he wants to live in Adelaide - his wife was an important reason why they moved back here - he can set things up so the world can come to him - and there is enough opportunity for him to go overseas for short seminars and study tours.

Now if Real Madrid offered him $10m a year he would have to seriously consider it and maybe change his plan but the likelihood of them paying what they pay Messi is almost zero.

Prof Kevin Norton mentioned in the article does a lot of work with the AFL especially around their annual injury report and presented a paper on something a couple of years ago. Think it had to do with rotations or substitutes around game day injuries. I know he has done things with Neil Craig both studies and applied footy stuff.

Doubt he'd go to Real Madrid for free ;)

I'm not worried about Burgo & Co packing up and leaving, they want to see Port become a Real Madrid, not move to one!!
