Love Dasher, but I reckon the time is right to move on. The player I really hope hangs on for another year in a mentoring role is Otto. He's the one we can least afford to lose right now.
How did we miss this?
From the Adelaide addy on Friday
"The Cats are prepared for a change tomorrow morning, having named small forward Shannon Byrnes on their three-man emergency list, along with experienced defender Darren Milburn in his last duty at Geelong. He is expected to retire tomorrow and join new Crows coach Brenton Sanderson's panel at West Lakes."
If it's on the Pies board it must be so Fozz.yeah i just saw that someone on the pies board posted that milburn is off to the crows as well. wtf? very strange...
When he goes, Ottens will be a massive loss, no doubt. But I think if he does retire and the challenge is thrown down to Simpson and Vardy, it will ultimately be a positive thing for the club in three years time.
Otto has earnt the right to go out on his terms and if he wants to go on again, I've got no problem with that. But, overall, I see it as win-win for the club, whichever decision he makes.
But even if so of the older players aren't up to AFL standard week in week out anymore it would good to keep them around for another year considering the state of this years draft. They could do what Mooney and Milburn did this year and play between 9 and 14 games mentoring the younger players even player a couple of games in the VFL. Should they still be in the 22 by September they will be fresh and ready for finals footy otherwise having them on the list allows us to rotate players like we did this year.
Assistant coach there or at Adelaide.Twitter rumour: Dasher spotted at a Docklands bar speaking with Kevin Sheedy :\
Geelong star Darren Milburn has announced his retirement after a brilliant 292 game career.
Milburn was a star of two premiership teams and earned All Australian honours in 2007. He debuted in the opening round of 1997 against Richmond and went on to become the most successful Geelong player in history, playing in 181 wins for the club.
