Toast Darren Milburn retires

Re: Dasher to retire

I reckon he should have gone on for another year, even if he almost is the same age as our coach. Was such a reliable, smart player. He'll be missed, although it will give us the opportunity to try out some kids and make selection easier.

Going to miss Moons too:heart: He is my favourite player of all time. Will never get over the farewell after the GF, and the Stokes Mooney hug. Brought a tear to my eye (I'm soft, whatever!)

Re: Dasher to retire

Was one of the first pieces of the puzzle in regards to our premiership teams along with Scarlett and to a lesser extent King. Was always a favourite of mine. The perfect result for us would be a Bluey McGrath role in the VFL team.

Re: Milburn to retire

with Otto I would like to see a similar situation to Milburn this year. He could have an on field role while very much being a mentor to monster & Vardy. If we play a finals series, which IMO we definately will, whether or not he plays in preference to the young kids will be seen at the time

Re: Dasher to retire

Love Dasher, but I reckon the time is right to move on. The player I really hope hangs on for another year in a mentoring role is Otto. He's the one we can least afford to lose right now.

When he goes, Ottens will be a massive loss, no doubt. But I think if he does retire and the challenge is thrown down to Simpson and Vardy, it will ultimately be a positive thing for the club in three years time.

Otto has earnt the right to go out on his terms and if he wants to go on again, I've got no problem with that. But, overall, I see it as win-win for the club, whichever decision he makes.

Re: Milburn to retire

How did we miss this?
From the Adelaide addy on Friday

"The Cats are prepared for a change tomorrow morning, having named small forward Shannon Byrnes on their three-man emergency list, along with experienced defender Darren Milburn in his last duty at Geelong. He is expected to retire tomorrow and join new Crows coach Brenton Sanderson's panel at West Lakes."

Re: Milburn to retire

Very sad to see Dash go...

A loss to the club if he leaves.....

He, like Otto, has earned the right to go on if he chooses.

Perfect world he would play on and get the 300 and mentor the Guthrie, Smedts and Bathie's of the world in the ways of Dasher.... mongrel and all.....

Would be hard to swallow however knowing that come Sept you might no get a look in....

Whatever happens, really hope he stays at teh club and is not lost to anywhere else...

Thanks Dasher for everything.......

Go Catters

Re: Milburn to retire

sensational career Dasher:thumbsu:
As cool as they come under pressure and as tough and brave as any to have played the game. Sensational competitor and his legacy has been passed onto the new brigade.
The Adelaide Crows have snapped up two blokes who know nothing else but to win and their competitive drive and determination will ensure the Crows will be a serious challenger in 2012.

Agree with that.

The timing is right for Dasher to retire and you'd think he will, but beyond him and Moons (and Drum as well, plus bye to Blake) it would be good to hang onto most of the older players for another year if we can rather than make wholesale changes.

I'd be happy for Otto to go on if his body's up to it and he's happy to take more of a mentoring role, and that will really benefit West/Simpson/Vardy, but by the same token if he wants to retire having to step up might benefit them, and us, over the long term.

Re: Dasher to retire

But even if so of the older players aren't up to AFL standard week in week out anymore it would good to keep them around for another year considering the state of this years draft. They could do what Mooney and Milburn did this year and play between 9 and 14 games mentoring the younger players even player a couple of games in the VFL. Should they still be in the 22 by September they will be fresh and ready for finals footy otherwise having them on the list allows us to rotate players like we did this year.

Yep agree, providing the players in question are willing to do that, then it makes sense.
