To be fair should compare Dawes in his fwd/ruck role in 2012 V White this year.

18 games, 1.1 goals, 6.0 hit-outs, 2.1 tackles.

When the role is to ruck and kick goals then White did better than Dawes and has some improvement to go.

I never particularly liked the circumstances that lead to his departure, but we were kissed on the proverbial with the compensation we received for an average footballer!

Completely agree, but there were some unnamed posters (Manic Magpie) who were comparing both Dawes and White 2014 versions earlier this year. I was just pointing out that even comparing the two based on this season, there is pretty much nothing between them. We have lost nothing, and gained a young star in Broomhead.

Pretty hard to be unhappy with that trade.

Given the spirited conversation taking place in the 'Pies made mistakes' thread I thought it would be interesting to have a read of this classic thread from The Distributer. General consensus seems to be that Dawes is hopeless and needs to be dropped. Even Manic Magpie stated that he should be traded. Props to HFF for his view that Buckley was to blame for playing him in the ruck. You might have been on to something!

Can't see where Manic Magpie had anything to say on the topic, but I get where you are coming from. However, Dawes is a better forward than White. He is not at his best when required to be the only big target in attack, though his last game this season for Melbourne produced good statistics and favourable comments from Melbourne supporters. But playing a secondary role to a tall option like Cloke, Dawes showed in 2010, and in his final game for Melbourne this year, that he can be a far more effective power forward than White. Broomhead, skillful and accomplished as he appears to be, is not a better outcome because he does not play the same role as Dawes. We lack a 2nd key forward and the deficiency will haunt us for some time to come. White is a better 2nd ruck, but if we play Witts and Grundy in tandem, we won't need White performing ruck duties anyway. In any event, Dawes is history now and we have fresher fish to fry, so I have no desire to reopen the argument about his dismissal.

Dawes had a poor end to his time at Collingwood. Trading him is fine but trading him for a guy like White hasn't improved us at all.
