The whole mental health issue at the moment in Society is massive there are plenty of resources to help anyone who needs it rather than paying someone to show you how to paint. I would rather promote these things like lifeline and RUOK.

I would love more than anything for Beams to come out and say i am retiring from football and i would like to thanks the Collingwood football club for giving me a one last chance, i would especially like to thank all the players who sacrificed $ for me to come back to Melbourne.

Sorry the bolded part was in my dreams it got away from me.

Gibbs has more integrity than Beams will ever have.
The other big difference is Gibbs can still pull on the boots for his club.

Given what he cost and what he's offered since he arrived, the Crows and/or their supporters might hold a different view on Gibbs.

I'd really like to sell a few of you muppets a bridge.

To white knight for a guy that A) Doesn't give a sh*t about you or frankly anyone but himself and B) is hurting the football team which is supposed to be your only interest here, is sad, stupid and pathetic. Dayne played the club officials for the morons that they are. Good for him. It doesn't mean we as fans have to thank him for it.

Mental health is the new patriotism - the last refuge of a scoundrel. Mental health is a serious issue. But that's why it is not meant to be something you use to try and mask your poor character, which Dayne clearly has. D*ckheads that hide behind it hurt the people of good character with mental health problems.

Always fit your own oxygen mask before assisting others.

There’s more to life than chasing a pig skin around a paddock?

Sure, he’s getting paid handsomely to not chase a pigskin around a paddock, but that’s not your point.

The club have a contract with him. Us fans don’t.

Wait, what?!?!?

You nor I nor anybody else have NFI what is / isn’t going on with Dayne. We can make assumptions ... but those mean diddly squat.

Sounds like you’re insinuating that he had no intention of ever fulfilling the contract, and duped the club from day 1. I highly doubt that’s the case. I think he arrived, tried, got injured, took to pain relief and other means to numb the pain, things spiraled out of control, ostracised himself from the people that supported him within the club, further spiraling... then no turning back.

yes, he could’ve been more unselfish along the way, but that’s his call and he’ll have to live with it. I dare say the friendships he’s broken will haunt him for a while.

still doesn’t mean you string the guy up. You can still show empathy whilst seeing the situation for what it is...

Maybe if you white knight Dayne on the internet some more he might even give you a 10% discount for his next fingerpainting class.

The bloke had a contract which has to be paid out. He really did have issues. Good on him for choosing art, to clear his head and get on with life.

Better then partying or being involved in nefarious deeds.
You win some and you lose some. We move on

So if you sign a contract and then claim you're struggling with mental health, you're entitled to a full payout of the contract without having to work a day?

I'm not sure why people keep saying to leave this alone. Us members basically pay this guy's wage and have a right to give an opinion on how that money is spent. If Dayne is unfit to play he should at the very least be in QLD doing all he can to his team by providing support and advice.

Just because I’m not shitcanning him, doesn’t mean I’m white knighting him.

(I sometimes wonder if seeing the footy world in black and white is predominantly a Collingwood thing?)

From a neutral viewpoint there are a number of 'desperately seeking a cause' types who regularly 'jump on board' any 'discrimination cause' going on this site.
There is no discussion with them - unless you declare undying love for their current cause you are and infidel.
The fact that they are allowed to continue their antics is one of the reasons I have gone from regular poster to very occasional.

How will he be remembered?

2010 premiership player, 2012 B&F

Left the club the first time round in a less than average manner, came back for a decent price - we know what’s happened since.

if anyone has done any basic contract law, there is a concept that the contract is frustrated. One of the classic examples is an opera singer who signs a contract to perform at a theatre but loses his voice. He cant do it. The contract is automatically broken. Of course that assumes that there is nothing in the contract that says that he is still going to be paid...

The other factor is whether the people involved in the contract could have forseen the circumstances - such as what happened to broomhead. Collingwood couldnt have broken their contract with Tim because it was reasonable to assume that he might get injured during the contract. The questiion then is whether Collingwood should have forseen that Beams would have mental problems with his history. If I was his lawyer I would argue that. The Pies signed the contract with their eyes open to his problems.

Every time I see this thread get bumped I hope a resolution has been agreed so I check and it is more of the same.

Can you put a whole thread on ignore, my curiosity gets the better of me every single time....doh!

Not wanting to put petrol on this fire, but I can hand on heart say I never wanted to see this guy back at the Pies.
Same as Coutinho at Liverpool. He can FRO despite wanting back in.

The 2nd 1st rounder we gave up for this guy ended up being Georgiades at Port Power.
Exactly the type of young, key forward our list is DESPERATE for.

Such a heavy price paid.

The Beams situation has nothing to do with contract frustration. He has obligations under the standard playing contract generally to train and prepare. Very simply, if (as is likely) he has medical advice not to train/attend the club, he is meeting his obligations. Thus he gets paid. Any settlement is just a negotiation.

You're right, but there are no guarantees about who we'd have taken. Just like you could say getting Treloar cost us Weideman. Yes he went with the pick which was originally ours (from memory) but Hine probably would've picked another mid...

well that's beams' side of things. I was suggesting how the club might go if it was to get legal on beams. if that were the case, it would say that beams is never likely to play.....which seems like frustration to me. And as i said, the counter would be that the club signed the contract knowing that beams had mental problems so it cant be frustration.

let me cut and past from the jonathon hay media report....

"He is believed to have accepted a $250,000 payout in full settlement of the outstanding $660,000.

In August, Hay revealed he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2003 and that the problem had resurfaced during the year.

While the Roos pledged to support Hay, it emerged this month they wanted to revise his contract on the grounds he had not disclosed the illness when he transferred from Hawthorn."
