How have we and him still not worked out whether he is part of the process or not?

**** him off... he's having chats with Hawthorn, but we're still allowing him to be possibly a candidate for our job?

I would love him to take on a Director of Coaching role alongside a Hinkley / Hardwick combo, but surely he's not in the mix for the head position now?

I dont get it...

If he turns out to be the best candidate then i have no trouble with the junkyard dog.

Agree... but you're in or you're out.

Why are we allowing him 2-3 days to work out whether he wants to be interviewed as part of the coaching process?

It takes one phone call...

CC: Dean, would you like to coach our club?
JD: Yes/No
CC: Your interview time is XYZ / **** off

Simple really.

Agree. There is no time when we're down to final 4 and completing 2nd round interviews to wait for someone who doesn't even know if he wants to coach.

Make a decision or you're out.

I want us to have a coach that has the passion to coach and it seems Laidley is struggling in that area if we keep giving him more time to make a call.

this is a long bow to draw, and purely my own speculation, but i wonder if he still has financial ties to Nth Melbourne and somehow the word was put on him (expressly or implicitly) that if he stalls RFC and thereby drawing out our "process" and allowing Nth to sign Hardwick, that he would get more of a payout or an easier payout ...

.. or another bit of speculation, if he was genuinely interested in the RFC gig, but doesnt like his chances in the process vs Hardwick, maybe he stalls, we lose Hardwick and his chances improve

As an aside, i am neither for or against Hardwick, i want the best candidate as determined by the process, but the general perception is certainly that Hardwick is the leading candidate

There are two reasons I don't think Laidley would be doing anything for North.

1. His contract with North are finished and North have no contract to pay out.

2. Why he would help North get a coach is beyond me.

Despite the perception that Hardwick is the best candidate it's more style than substance that's getting him that title. Luckily we're looking for substance while it seems North are looking for what is in style by general perception. We know from experience that's a dangerous path to take.

Re #1, this may not necessarily be the case. If i were running Nth i would stagger his payments (i.e. that constitute his "pay out") at least until a successor is found so as they have a "stick" over the former coach, who may or may not have some resentment and bias the search for his successor and possibly deny them what they perceive as the best candidate. I would also withhold some payment at least until the end of the year for a whole range of other reasons, such as an incentive not to join another club mid season and leak Nth Melbourne IP (game plans etc) which are much harder to change mid season - although admittedly their ladder position makes this much less of a priority.

What i'm saying above is that it is entirely possible, despite what has been reported publicly, the Laidley still has financial ties with Nth until at least the H&A season ends and/or a permanent replacement is found.

The point on him not liking Nth or wanting to do anything for them is valid, but we all know that in the real world financial considerations will take precendence.

Completely agree with your comments re: Hardwick and style/substance, but thats almost a moot point to my speculation.

FWIW, the one guy that i hope we dont get in this whole process is Laidley. Regardless of how he goes through the "process" i think there is plenty of data on him as a coach from which to already form an opinion, and i have never rated him highly at all. People will point to him being a good "match day" coach and all this, or that he didnt have much to work with etc, but to me these all seem like half truths and excuses. IMO he is a largely unimpressive senior coach, who has had his time and shown he cant get the job done. I'd much rather Richardson, Hinkley, Hardwick or Rawlings who all have the benefit of not having had their shot and failing. I'm all for second chances as well (not that statistically, failed coaches given a second chance ends well) but there should at least be a glimmer that justifies that second chances and i just have never seen it with Laidley. Just me 2 cents.

Hardwick has been having chats with North Melborune and also supposedly rumoured, chats with Port Adelaiade to take over after.

Keep him in for interviews.

I know what you're saying eays in regard to this years contract but I personally disagree with the validity of the theory.
He has no further contract past this season so no matter how slow the Kangas want to stagger the payments, he's going to get that amount guaranteed in his contract eventually (Unless the Kangas don't mind being sued and covering the legal costs that go with it). And I'm sure Dean isn't concerned about ~0.7% drop in purchasing power on his pay due to inflation that he may miss out on by getting some payments a financial quarter late, so there is no incentive for him to to be essentially blackmailed in my opinion.

The finance he will eventually receive, if it is delayed is not based, on him doing any more from North to receive it, so why would he bother doing so?
