I don't have any problem with how he plays 99.9% of the time, and thought he was a terrific get for the team. I also liked Farmer, right up until he stuck his fingers in another players eyes. After that I felt ashamed he was in our team, and looked forward to seeing another player in his place.

I'd argue Farmer's eye gouge was a lot worse than Solly's elbow. Solly's was a brain fart miscalculation during the hustle and bustle of play while Farmer's was just plain stupid.

But I don't hate Farmer because of it either. Everyone makes mistakes. Condemn the action, not the man.

When you get the same person doing exactly the same sorts of things over and over and over again, I think you can condemn the man.

Solly has not even come close to earning that same reputation.

gav you have no idea as to why only a one year contract was signed. perhaps solly only wanted one year as he is thinking of retiring..... your inability to forgive a player who in general has been great for us is staggering,

If the coach thinks Solomon is one of the first players picked in our best 22 but he only gets a one year deal, and given Murphy got 2 years, I would think that your suggestion that it is what Solomon wants is very plausible. I struggle to think of another reason it would pan out that way. Oh, apart from my suggestion that Harvey thinks Solomon may be a liability.

It's not up to me to forgive Solomon, Ling did that. But if you have a player coming off a very long suspension with an extensive history at the Tribunal, who is already in the last phases of his career, then it is quite different from how you would treat a young player in a similar situation. Sinclair a good example of a player who habitually did dodgey things on the field, especially leaping off the ground to lay a head high shirtfront on opposition players. Train them out of it, and get them to focus their aggression legally. No point re-training Solomon. A one year contract is simply putting him on notice, and you need to start preparing for life without him.

fair call, i agree that that is the most likely reason for the one year, but just because you are putting a player on notice, doesnt mean he isn't still one of the more valuable members of your team. i think the club probably thought, well he is an older player and the interest from other clubs would be minimal, so we can say to him, hey of you elbow someone again then you wont get a contract... but i dont think that solly has been ill disciplined in his time at freo... other than the brain explosion how many weeks has he been suspended? id go for maybe two or three weeks.... hell michael johnson would have missed more weeks than him if he hadnt of elbowed lingy... but im over it, you'll, have your opinion, i'll have mine... and when he plays 21 games for the year and ends up in our top 7 in the B&F maybe his value will become clearer

I think Harvey (or whoever) made the right decision with a one year contract, and maybe it will work.

You do realise it was Solomon's second suspension last year, and he contributed a total of 13 games for the season? He was done for smashing into someones back as well I think, giving him carry-over points and making his suspension longer than Barry Halls for a worse incident. If he sneezes in the direction of an opposition player he'll get 5 weeks, and his frees-against tally is already 50% higher than his frees-for. I can see that blowing out this year because he will be watched very carefully, as he already had been.

Good luck to him if he makes the contribution you are hoping for from him. I am not saying he can't play football, he clearly can. But I think we are at a stage where he is keeping someone like Drum or Mayne or Suban or Bradley out of the side. They will still be playing next year and beyond, and can form part of the longterm structure of the team.

are you sure about that? i cant remember, too much boozin

none of those players offer the physicality and pressure that solly does which is the best aspect of his game... if he behaves himself and focuses on the ball, which im sure he will, he will be of great benifit to the team
