Too early to make that call. Gives us next year and decide. Still way too much potential on our list to go making statements like that.
Either way it wouldn't be due to any great decisions of your president. Clearly a new president wouldn't have the ego to try and pull the whole handing down the torch to Buckley stunt. Now you're left with a mediocre coach which the players clearly aren't giving 100% for and self-confessed cultural issues.

All great leaders pass their used-by date. By all means keep him on the board and have him as a public figure promoting the club but he should really call it a day on the presidency and give someone fresh a go. Or won't his ego allow that?

It is dispicable he is allowed to commentate in games, apart from the fact he is seriously bad, very good tv personality but that doesn't correspond to sport commentary - but commentating on games is seriously a compromised situation given he is a president of a club. It is a conflict of interest.

As good as he is in 'who wants to be a millionaire' he just is terrible to listen to, no control over his voice.

Hear hear! Between the Geelong Advertiser and Eddie "The Fat Controller" McGuire, we've had just about enough of Victorians being made to look arrogant and stupid.

Settle pettel, a Geelong newspaper writing an article that sings the praises of it's home town team is a surprise to you? And Eddie McChins doesn't speak for all Vic clubs.

It's almost like there's no bias over in WA/SA and Vic is the only state that does.

Also point out the part where I said Eddie was infallible, the bloke made a huge mistake there. Also point out the part where he didn't try to atone for it? If you have done as much for AFL or aboriginal rights as Eddie raise your hand.

So going on your previous post about reading what's said properly, maybe you should also, as all everyone else has said, he made a mistake with this issue and has nothing to do with what he's done for the pies historically as you brought into the discussion. Cant have it both ways mate.

I don't have a problem with Eddie going in to bat for his club, when it's required, but he has too much of a say even over the smallest things and gets involved too much with all things football.

He orchestrated the Buckley deal, shouldn't that be a football department process and he and his board just ratify it? He let his man love for Buckley cloud his judgement. Was a due diligence carried out to see if Buckley was the right person to be senior coach of Collingwood? Or did just do the deal without too much thought? To me, it seems the latter.

Club Presidents should go into bat for their club when the need arises, eg stadium deals, macroeconomic policies of the AFL, not when and where the club will play its next final FFS, leave that to the Football Operations Manager.

Had Malthouse still been coach, there's no way known he would have let the Eddie whinging about the semi final, before the elimination final had even been played, go without retracting it. Malthouse would not leave anything to chance, he is himself a master of the mind games, no way known he would want anyone from Collingwood, not even Eddie, giving any opposition club ammunition.

His problem is, he thinks Collingwood is bigger than the AFL and he thinks he is bigger than Collingwood FC. Buckley won't stand up to him because Buckley is an Eddie man, so Eddie is let loose to do and say whatever he wants regarding Collingwood.

Eddie has done a lot of good things for Collingwood but everyone has a used by date. Eddie has been president for well over a decade, if he wants to stay on at Collingwood, he needs to either reinvent himself or step back and let footy people make the football decisions and do the football talking.

You have to be kidding me when I read that a supporter of either West Coast or Fremantle complain about home team newspaper bias. The Perth newspapers dont even include players from eastern state teams in their player of the year competitions. FFS, take the blinkers off.

This is true. The Gabbletiser was done for a Geelong audience. Interstate papers are just as biased towards their players as that's what sells papers. You really shouldn't get upset about what they did in the Gabbletiser. I thought it was all tongue in cheek.

Ooh yeah. Being in Perth, I can attest to that! :p

In any case, newspapers are hardly an indication of a teams arrogance.

Eddie's "passion" is the reason you have Nathan Buckley as coach and your premiership window is shut.

Been there too long. Time to give it up. Like the good old days. A bit tired. Get Adam Goodes down for it. You know what I'm getting at don't you?

Could be worse, we could have had Hird and bomber.

Or West Australians tipping the eagles for top spot and the flag and who they would play GF day.
I remember the 07 GF where the eagles had 2 bays. There were just as many eagles fans as Port.
Western Australians should be the last to talk about arrogance.

Dear Eddie,

Thank you for taking time out of your no doubt busy day to spend some time on big footy.

Sincerely,

The open letter time wasted club

Eddie's quite a good commentator apart from his Collingwood bias.

I bet he's spewing that Carlton and Mick Malthouse are still in the finals and Collingwood aren't.

Blinkers are well off. Victoria's been my home since before the Dockers even existed. But come on. Like one poster said, Eddie is the reason why Collingwood is the country's biggest club. So why does he have to carry on like a prat? Just a couple of weeks ago he was banging on about Port's jumper. Arrogant twit. And Geelong are a marvellous club and in spite of their huge domination the past few years, I haven't met many Geelong supporters who would qualify as arrogant. They were made to look silly by their local rag.

Great thread, compelling and rich.

Seriously the bloke is the reason we are the biggest club in Australia. Any other club would gladly have him as their president. If the players played with as much passion as Eddie, then we would win the flag every year.

Yeah he makes mistakes but so does everyone, he just talks way too much. It's not the worst quality to live with, a lot of what he says is very good.

Yeah he looked too far forward but he made a point for the sake of the game no just Collingwood. If people actually considered some of the things he said instead of automatically assuming the worst from each statement (this is actually a problem with the whole of Australia not just Eddie related), then you would see he actually has the game of AFL first and foremost in his mind.

Those suggesting Kochie over Eddie need to actually look back to 10-15 years ago and see that he is just doing exactly what Eddie did for Collingwood. Give it time and people will start potting him as well.
Great club president, no argument there.

But he has no absolutely right to use his media role to push the Collingwood agenda so shamelessly.

Massive conflict of interest. (Mind you, last time I said that on BF, I got into a protracted argument with a Pies supporter and after about three pages of rubbish exchanges it became clear he didn't even know what "conflict of interest" meant!)

Frankly I think he behaves like a bit of a knob at times and should learn to close his mouth but he does love his club and he never backs away from doing all he can to help the club along. Eddie is really what every club president should be...except maybe they should be smarter.

You certainly cannot criticise his passion or his efforts for Collingwood. So all credit to him for that.

Settle!

We don't have a newspaper in Perth. We have a WCE sponsor that publishes paid promotional material for Eagles. When we get a newspaper that behaves in the manner you describe, you can criticise. In the meantime, news is available on the web.
