Thought this looked wrong. I just checked twice and Melbourne's adds up to 1892.

Since 07, we've lost over 1324 games in experience & made 2 Prelims. Quite amazing really that we've stayed to that level.

Even the youngest sides haven't lost that much experience in these years.

Impressive.

However, since 07, we've lost 2297 games in experience & made a Preliminary Final and a Grand Final.

This is what I've seen.

AVERAGE AGE & GAMES PLAYED

West Bulldogs - 24.0 years old (72.1 games)
StKilda - 23.9 (66.4)
Geelong - 23.8 (70.1)
Sydney - 23.7 (61.8)
Hawthorn - 23.4 (52.7)
Collingwood - 23.4 (67.4)
Adelaide - 23.3 (58.9)
Port Adelaide - 23.3 (54.1)
Brisbane - 23.2 (61.4)
Fremantle - 23.1 (58.0)
Essendon - 22.7 (44.7)
West Coast - 22.7 (46.0)
North Melb - 22.5 (43.0)
Melbourne - 22.5 (43.7)
Carlton - 22.5 (48.3)
Richmond - 22.4 (42.3)

And if you take the average games played by Melbourne (43.7), and multiply it by the amount of players on your list (46), you get 2010.2, which is slightly off the figure given in the OP (probably due to rounding in the avg. games played figure).

Which would indicate that it is correct.

Whilst Bally is not the "messiah", that is completely incorrect.

You've already got players like O'Bree and Pendlebury who are good at burrowing in and getting the ball out. I think Ball will prove to be a bargain trade but I'm not sure he will help to win a flag. He was not played at St.Kilda at times because his skills let him down all too often.

Back to the OP the quality over quantity is all important. Carlton's youth is lauded, yet it couldn't beat a half-strength Crows outfit on the weekend. In their case it's a fact of stockpiling most of their great youth in one part of the ground. West Coast on the other hand have talented youth in areas like the ruck and key positions like CHF, as well as in the guts.

Are you sure about that? Perhaps next time you'll check the facts before making a fool of yourself

The following is an interesting piece of information based on total games experience for each AFL club list for 2010.

There appears to be a direct correlation between experience and "premiership window."

It just goes to show that you peak at about the time that you have the most experience on your list.

All the talk seems to be about having a younger list or older list, but age doesn't seem to correlate as directly as experience I would suggest.

If the ladder finished like this I don't think too many people would be all that surprised with only a couple of strange placings.

1 Western Bulldogs 3315
2 Geelong 3297
3 Collingwood 3170
4 St Kilda 3123
5 Sydney 2783
6 Adelaide 2767
7 Brisbane 2762
8 Fremantle 2670

9 Port Adelaide 2545
10 Hawthorn 2526
11 Carlton 2220
12 Essendon 2058
13 Melbourne 2008
14 North Melbourne 1978
15 West Coast 1953
16 Richmond 1945

No surprises really......the top 4 are favs to make the top 4 purely because they have quality 'senior' depth. Rattling off a string of high draft picks may win you a poll or two on bigfooty, but it wont win you a game of AFL!

Pies definitely going for the flag....the next two years will prob be the last two for Presti, O'Bree, Lockyer, L.Brown and B.Johnson.......even tho arguable that they will even be in the best 22, comes finals time it is great depth.....picking up blokes like L.Brown and S.Buckley for even more senior depth shows that the pies are all about the flag!

Blow it out your arse Panther, that is a relatively light loss

Since 2007 Essendon have lost over 2000 games experience, with traded out players games at their new club excluded and traded in players games deducted from the total. I didn't include inexperienced players who only scratched up a handfull of games.

If someone went through the lists for Richmond, Melbourne and the likes I bet they would have similar figures.

I think that I've devised a plan for certain premiership success. Every year, during the h&A season, a team adds 484 games of experience to their list. 22 players a week times 22 games =484. Therefore all you need to do is not delist anyone who has played seniors and continue this policy for 7 years and you'll hit your premiership window. After 9 years you'll have over 4000 games of experience, and be utterly invincible. Also by drafting retirees and veterans you could dramatically accelerate this process.

On a side note, when looking at the current Geelong team and Brisbane 2001-3, it seems clear that having a bloodnut in your leadership group is vital if you desire to be a truly dominant team. carlton's recent nadir, however shows that it can't be a fat bloodnut. Food for thought

Well for all those Melbourne supporters who say 2008 is incorrect.

If you go by the AFL Record Season Guide 2010 page 197 it states for the Melbourne list matches at this Club 1902 however total matches in a players AFL career 2008.

This could be wrong but that is the figure that others are quoting.

Would suspect Joel MacDonald 80 for Brisbane and Maloney 23 for Geelong may have been the difference in your records.

Richmond has only just gotten rid of its deadwood now. And theres more to go. Hardwick is still dealing with unwanted players which hell get rid of this year. And theres no draft to exploit either. Gotta feel for the bloke. But yeh If WestCoast lost Cox or North lost Boomer, like Essendon with Fletcher these teams would be in the 1600's. Stoked we r*ped the last couple of drafts. Were lucky bastards.

This is the experience ladder for the most experienced 22 players for each team:

Code:
1	wbd	3175
2	gee	3151
3	col	2929
4	stk	2796
5	syd	2670
6	ade	2654
7	bri	2605
8	pta	2366
9	fre	2360
10	haw	2144
11	car	2031
12	ess	1928
13	nmk	1909
14	mel	1873
15	ric	1853
16	wce	1820

Players who won't play a game this year (retirements, season ending injuries and delistments) were not counted. I included Brad Fisher because AFAIK he'll be returning from his knee injury later this season.

I'm not sure how telling any of this stuff is, but I enjoy working with numbers, so what the heck?

So the addition of Joel McDonald single-handedly lifts Melbourne from least to 3rd/4th least experienced. Shows how insignificant these stats are... especially when comparing the bottom few least experienced sides.

Stats can be twisted anyway - West Coast have 7 players over 26 years of age, Melbourne have 3 players. Does this mean anything? Probably not, but a little twist and Voila they mean something.
