Not sure many people will have watched the non-top 8 clash last night, but there was a quite extraordinary moment late on - an Adelaide player was tackled near the boundary, facing the crowd, in their back pocket. He kicked it directly out of bounds, about 150 degrees away from the Adelaide goal.
Decision: throw it in.
When the Hawthorn players complained wanting ‘deliberate’, the umpire’s response (I think Razor Ray) was “He had to kick it”.
The umps had been quite sharp on incorrect disposal (a welcome return to actual footy instead of everyone just dropping the ball), but what a bizarre decision.
Kind of like saying you it’s OK to fend off high if you’d otherwise get caught holding the ball.
I’ve got to assume it’s just one of those brain fart moments rather than a correct decision?
