Next year is a strong draft and we will be using all 6 picks (player or trade in) Port 1st, St. Kilda 2nd, Port 2nd, North 3rd, Port 3rd, Port 4th

Exactly right Malcolm.

2016- Trade first round picks from a weak 2017 Draft. Result Sam Powell Pepper, Todd Marshall, Joe Atley.
2017- Trade in RFA's and DFA's to compenstate for a weak Draft. Result Tom Rockliff, Steven Motlop, Jack Watts, Jack Trengove, Lindsay Thomas*, Trent McKenzie.
2018- Particpate 100% in a strong Draft with first and second round picks.

Our list managers determined that the 2017 Draft was weak and the 2018 Draft was exceptionally strong and positioned us accordingly.

Hats off to Cripps and co. as far as list rebuilding goes in a three year span that result is pretty good. Anyone who criticises that result has no idea.

I don't care what any other ignoramus bone head says. I love our stategy. I just wish we had a top strategic coach to execute it now. Kenny has done awesome to get em here. But we really needs a Walsh or Richardson next to him to execute it. Any news on the assistant coaching front as yet?
So on the mark. Missing piece is the strategic help in the coaching department.

One critical enabler of the strategy was not setting up long contracts linked to the then future CBA. The curious case of the last three seasons of Matthew Lobbe, and to a far lesser extent those of Hamish and Broady, may have prompted us into that smart move a couple of years back. Gave us room to move on more than one significant target in the event one year's draft pool seemed a little shallower. Just maybe the club figured out the sort of mistake we'd made with those contracts sooner than most of us on this board realized.

Also re cap - I don't recall anyone definitively confirming the impact on our cap of not paying Mofries and Paddy for a year. Whether the AFL did allow the 'under one year, then over the next, as long as you pay the required average over time' effect for their two salaries.

Disagree I think we will use 4 picks like last year but package picks to move up the order

Can someone explain to me the logic behind that the DFA's will ruin development?
Because we replaced fringe players with different fringe players therby not reducing the chances the youngsters get.

Because we improved our draft position allowing us to draft better kids.

Because we surrounded our young players with leaders and quality players.

Most of us wanted change in personnel and we got it. I'm very happy with this trading period. A couple of disappointments for me though - the stagnation of Impeys development was very disappointing as he is a player when near his best that we desperately needed. We gave him every chance to succeed, will be intresting to see how he goes with the Hawks. The loss of Austin - although I expected this one I still think this may hurt us.

Can’t agree more with this post.

Impey fulfilling his potential with a resurgent Hawthorn team would hurt the most, especially if our recruiting strategy doesn’t reap the ultimate reward.

Seriously, why do you guys care so much about what opposition supporters think of our team management strategy?

For all those crows supporters lurking in the shadows: why do you care so much about our team management strategy?

Eventually, the results will tell if we were right or wrong. And we'll live with it.

I think the error many opposition supporters are making is viewing our off season list management in a vacuum of 2017 and 2017 alone. It only makes sense as a three year plan across 2016-2018. We've picked up three years worth of experienced recruits this year because we didn't pick up any last year and hit the draft hard, which I am anticipating will be the case again next year.

I also expect Parker to land one or two shrewd recruits with this year’s draft picks.

As with the DFAs, it's a free hit. We haven't planned to build our list around this year's draft at all but if we land a player or two it will be a big win.

Agreed, at face value this has been the club's best trading period for years, although it won't surprise me greatly if Impey thrives at the hawks.

I still have some doubts about the decision to trade Austin as well, I'm not too sure many other clubs would have traded out a 22 yo 195 cm mobile defender, and I thought he may have been cut some slack for one poor season, particularly given how he missed a large slice of the preseason due to his broken leg.
I guess it's all part of the master plan though. ;)

Last time we had picks of this kind we had the Howard, Austin, Palmer, Frampton draft. I’ve potted Parker in the past, but he has definitely shown himself highly capable of finding value in the draft.

Outcome has everything to do with it.

One can only maximize the odds of having a good outcome. It is impossible to avoid the possibility of failure. One can do everythimg right, but still fail. Moreover, one can do everything wrong, i.e., decreasing his odds of success, but still succeed.

Regardless, we must recognize and praise the one who have increased his chances of winning (despite losing). He did a better job than the fellow who set himself up to failure but suceeded.

In brief, outcome has nothing to do with it.

Most opposition supporters aren't going to come and post here if they think you're doing the right thing. You'll only hear from the trolls who'd be sticking the boot in even if you drafted the whole All Australian squad.

I think most reasonable people realise you've had a fantastic period so far and the list managers have given you every chance of a flag in 18 without selling the farm.

Was hoping to find some Thomas news though...

I think people see it as that we've undone all of our good work at the draft.
Draft Marshall, lose Trengove -> Get Watts.
Draft SPP -> Get Rockliff
Draft Atley -> Get Trengove
Draft Bonner -> Get McKenzie

It is 100% a thought of we got these players and they instantly nullify the recruitment of those players because in their eyes they will be played instead of the draftees. Thus disrupting the ecosystem at Port leading to a bunch of young disgruntled players wanting out at the end of the year.

What they don't see is that Watts, Rockliff and Motlop were brought in to strengthen our team since we lost Trengove and Impey. McKenzie and Trengove and whoever else we get will sit behind the kids as depth unless they absolutely dominate in every single way.

Bonner is in front of McKenzie
Atley is in front of Trengove

People see it the other way around.
