Delisted free agents

In our perceived best 22 in 2018 we will have Boak RGray Westhoff Ryder that are 30 and up. Rockliff Dixon Pittard Ebert are 28 and up. Getting in Lyndsey Thomas at 29 is one more aging player we don't need.
What does that matter if we're gearing up for a flag next year?

Holme's certainly says the right things for someone wanting a delisted free agent backup ruck.

"I would love nothing more than to have another opportunity to try to compete at the highest level," Holmes told AFL.com.au.

A tenacious combatant, he has a mature body that could be relied upon as a back-up.

"I can offer any team just that security that if I am picked, or a ruck goes down and you need someone to come in and still battle with the big boys at the AFL level, that I'll be in there providing the ball to the midfielders and forwards and whoever else needs it," Holmes said.

Sounds keen. Lot's of talk about working for the team and he seems to be well liked.

If there are no better options he would be a decent pick for a year and see what happens.

He would be more useful to our list than most of our unsigned players. Also, it is very rare to find a state league ruck who can transition to afl in their first year.

What about Bird? He was pretty good at Sydney. Not sure what happened this year at the Bombers. Would be a good depth player for 1 year.

We have moved to being one of the oldest teams with 3 free agents/trade and Thomas likely to come in.

I do not want to sign another 29 year old unless it is essential and that would be a ruckman or key defender. Not another midfielder. We already have wines, wingard, polec, powell-pepper, ebert, rockliff, gray, boak, bonner, atley and amon with AFL experience.

We don't need more depth in his position, and he isn't worth is anyway. Just doesn't have enough tools outside of being a dedicated tagger at AFL level.

Funny thing is I thought exactly the same thing when we recruited Damien Hardwick in 2003! A good, but over-the-hill, angry player that was just delisted by his club at 31 years of age.

Port win premiership in 2004

I dont give a stuff about LT's age ... can he help us get to the grand final, should be the ONLY question!

Fair enough. That's really the crux of it. Maybe LT can find form. I guess the majority seem to be satsified in giving him a try. Anything is possible.

Wanted Bird when he was 17- his dad played SANFL reserves with the Maggies in the 80s. Roger Kerr (whose dad played league) would've been good too. Alas, those ships have sailed.

He was part of the Swans academy wasn't he?

As I see it, Gus, Lobbe, Jacko and Krak is equivalent in age to Mots, Watts, Rocky and LT.

Depth ruck, get over it people.

Ken was clear weeks back that we have that depth, 9thmond just won the premiership running Grigg in the ruck at times. Rucks are fantastic when they are Ryder class, outside of that, its questionable what they bring.

I personally don't like how this is possible, but they changed the rules in the Primus era.

Depth ruck does not mean second, or relieving, ruck. They aren't necessarily best 22, and in the modern game they likely aren't.

Under your proviso, what happens when Ryder cops a season ending injury? Grigg? Depth ruck means that when Ryder gets injured, we have someone that can do a serviceable job.

With your Richmond scenario: If Nankervis went down, Maric could do the job. If Ryder goes down, who does ours?

As good of a prospect as he is, there is no way that Frampton is ready to be #1 AFL ruck.

It only needs to be someone who can be average most of the time.

We've played Renouf and Lobbe in the ruck. Frampton with heavy rotation from Hoff, Watts and Howard is not the end of the world.

Wasn't there a game in which Paddy dominated the ruck, but we couldn't get the ball right afterwards? Is so, how rare would that be in Footy?

If you are going to lose the ruck battle, is there a way to adjust the strategy accordingly?

I'd be keen on taking Jack Trengove for a few novel reasons. Firstly, we would have a Trengove back at the club. Secondly, we would then have both pick 1 and 2 from the 2009 draft at the club. Thirdth, he's an SA boy, bring him home.

Teams with poor / short rucks often set up assuming they'll lose the ruck battle. We did this with Trengove in 2016. Try and read the tap off the opposition ruckman and / or take up defensive positions around the contest. Works for some. You need a midfield that likes the inside / contested stuff.

When you come up against a ruck that doesn't hit many to advantage, it isn't a big problem to lose the tap. Its the rucks that tap to advantage a reasonable % of the time that really matter, and Ryder's the best in the league on that front right now. When you add that skillset to an ability to mark, run a bit and use the footy well, then you've got pure gold. Hence Ryder AA in 2017.

He was part of the NSW Scholarship scheme. We had the chance to get him and I believe he ever toured Alberton before he ended up being pre-selected by the Swans.

We went with Jordan Johns instead.

??? you are wrong

2009 draft

Priority 1 Tom Scully Dandenong Stingrays TAC Cup Melbourne
1 2 Jack Trengove Sturt SANFL Melbourne
1 3 Dustin Martin Bendigo Pioneers TAC Cup Richmond
1 4 Anthony Morabito Peel WAFL Fremantle
1 5 Ben Cunnington Geelong Falcons TAC Cup North Melbourne
1 6 Gary Rohan Geelong Falcons TAC Cup Sydney
1 7 Brad Sheppard East Fremantle WAFL West Coast
1 8 John Butcher Gippsland Power TAC Cup Port Adelaide
1 9 Andrew Moore Eastern Ranges TAC Cup Port Adelaide

Dusty aside, what a shite top 9.

Was billed as a bit of a super draft but has turned into one of the worst drafts for top end quality of all time.
