Demons may re-draft disgruntled defender

Jake Niall | December 9, 2008

MELBOURNE will consider re-drafting Chris Johnson with the first pick in the pre-season draft if he's the best available player, despite the disgruntled half-back's wish to join Carlton.

Johnson, who struggled for a regular game in 2008 and intends to sign a two-year deal with Carlton after the pre-season draft, declined to stay with the Demons, who offered him a one-year deal with incentive clauses that would ensure a second year.

While it seems highly unlikely that Melbourne would use a potentially valuable first pick in the draft for uncontracted and delisted players on a player who walked out, the club's football operations manager Chris Connolly said Johnson would be considered.

"If Chris Johnson is the best player in the draft, we'll draft him back," said Connolly. "Our position is he would be considered if he's the best available player."

Connolly acknowledged that fences would have to be mended if Johnson was to be drafted back to a club that did not give him a regular game in a season in which it finished on the bottom.

Melbourne has said it was open-minded about the first pick in the pre-season draft, and would consider either an untried kid or a seasoned player, however, whether they've played AFL or not, the club has a preference for younger players.

But Johnson's manager, Liam Pickering of IMG, questioned why Melbourne would even contemplate re-drafting a player who did not want to play for them.

"Melbourne should be looking elsewhere. They'll be getting a player who doesn't want to be there," said Pickering, adding that he and Johnson had spent six months asking the Demons whether he was a required player in 2009. "They didn't know whether they wanted to keep him or not."

Pickering said the Melbourne match committee had "been split" on whether it wanted him.

The fact that Melbourne could pick Johnson against his wishes is a potential issue for the AFL and the AFL Players Association, with the player union making noises about free agency. The pre-season draft was established as a means of allowing uncontracted players to leave — giving them a form of freedom — that would be undone if a club chose a player against his wish.

Whats the point in them taking him against his will? I know we could say the same thing about Thornton, but we had him agree to come back before that, where as Melbourne havent and would be taking him against his wishes. Bring on Free Agency.

Amazing to think that Melbourne would re-draft someone that doesn't want to be there. Surely they would be better off taking a punt on a kid, especially considering that there are still some quality kids available that weren't taken in the ND.

Agree totally, but we are talking about Melbourne HBF.

We were about to do the same thing with Thorton when he wanted to go to Hawthorn. There was uproar on this site a couple of years ago when I was happy to get rid of him because he didn't want to play for the jumper. Chris Johnson is a hack and shouldn't be drafted, I hope we opt for a young player who hasn't been tried. I hate soft players and Chris is one of the most softest players to play the game.

There is a bit of a difference, 1st thornton didnt start to train with the hawks, 2nd he re signed with the club by this stage.

Have you had a look at most of the filth team :D now thats soft...

Dont worry guys... Its the same bull that our club were going on about when 'Compo' walked out to play finals (seems pretty funny in hindsight) with the Bummers...

Gotta be entrenched in the "If They Had Their Time Over Again" file.

Exactly, won't happen, just Melbourne making noise - these kinda situations never eventuate

Neither team played finals after he left, don't think Campo would be too concerned.

What would you rather be remembered as? A ship jumper who chose the mortal enemy to flop about like a landed trout for a year or a one club stalwart who stuck around to finish his career at the club that made him?

He took a chance, as far as I know to play finals - since neither club did while he was still playing I don't think it would worry him.

If it was as important to him as it is to you to be remebered as a one club player, I guess he wouldn't have left in the first place ie. it probably wasn't that much of a consideration

He went out of the game as a nobody - the fans didn't care for him at Essendon and attitudes from Carlton supporters towards him were less than warm. His last game was a non-occasion. Had he stayed at Carlton, he'd likely have gone out with the respect he deserved for what he gave us on the field (before prostituting himself and turning that respect into hatred).

Assuming you haven't seen this guy play?

He is a very useful player who I am genuinely excited about. Great disposal and versatile in a number of roles. Will be in our best 22.

I've got my fingers crossed we secure him - will be the steal of 2009

turning that respect into hatred

I wouldn't say hatred...he was still a champion for us. Besides, you only need to look at the big farewell and respected comments we gave our own captain to know what farewell he may have missed

While I am not doubting the decision, when our captaincy is given to a guy who hasn't even played a game for us, and he is respected more than others at our club that has stuck through all the bs, I hardly think we should complain if players chase a bit of glory.

Didn't Campo leave only becoz they gave him a longer contract than we were going to? If that was the case then I don't see a problem. It most likely would have been driven by his manager trying to get him the best deal anyhow. Plus the Pagan factor he got away from him for the last bit of his playing days.

In hindsight we were right not to offer a long large contract but it was sad the way his career ended. I liked Campo and the pic of him holding up Fev going off after a goal I have blown up and framed.

If there is still hatred get over it - hasn't he got two sons? If the AFL hasn't screwed up the father son rule totally by then maybe they could be players.

I personally didn't feel hatred towards him but the sentiment at the time was that he was a backstabber. I couldn't help but pity the man in his last season - definitely not the way any player of his calibre would want to leave the game.

i dont want johnson
i dont think we need him
and i hope with finger crossed that the dees re-draft him.

if you cant get a game with the spooner than why would you get a game any where other then the vfl.

this has saddington, ackland, mclaren and pfeiffer writen all over it. bad bad move.
