It'd certainly be more fitting than the bloody "battle of the bridge". The Tom Scully saga is a good spark but it would need to have a bit more to develop into any sort of meaningful rivalry. Say Toby Greene crashed into Jack Viney or vice versa causing an injury and/or a brawl between the sides. Then it would get some momentum. (Though for the sake of the welfare of the players I hope that doesn't happen)

The only way to create rivalry of substance is either through a series of close and great games (West Coast VS Sydney a few years ago) or games between clubs that are eventful or controversial. or other like circumstances. The things you have mentioned are interesting facts and contrasts, but not inspiring enough on their own to create an interesting and lasting rivalry.

If Scully was to ever develop into a great player, then that would create a lot more interest and passion between the clubs.

Yep, like Hawthorn/Geelong. Or out of pure hatred, like the Crows/Port.

You can't manufacture rivalries out of nothing. There needs to be hatred.

1. Don't see how the size of our current fan base or our results make us "the ultimate expansion club"
2. Born near Gundagai, actually.
3. You have just pricked the ears of Swans fans
4. wtf

Swans aren't an original nsw team though, they are south melbourne re-located.

GWS will win by too much for this to happen. :(

1. Ultimate expansion...reflects the least likely location for successful
AFL expansion. Expansion is ultimate if you succeed in the most hostile environment.
2.Some say born near Molonglo River...before Canberra was there....So the founder of the nations game was born in the nations capital before the capital itself existed...a true legend.
3.Swans originally from Victoria
4.Read Tom Wills statue plaque outside the MCC members next time you're at the G.

Rivalries come about for a variety of reasons, geographic, class, quirky (coat waving from Sheedy), but they are not manufactured.

Also great rivalries have passion and a burning desire to win. Are you seriously thinking that Melbourne has this at the moment?
