Dennis is supurb.

He did another one on the weekend referring to someone saying "if you had someone kicking for your life at 45m this would be the man". Dennis chimed in with a "I think I'd take the kick myself since there is that much at stake".

He also pointed out on the weekend that he was disappointed he didn't get into the Footscray Team of the Century team at Centre Half Back (he played 2 games for the Bullies in approx 1978)

Brill-yent..

I actually thought he had also said that he would get his wife to take the kick for his life because:

"at least she would care"

I heard heaps of other funny ones on teh weekend but i didn't write them down and as I was drinking I have forgotten them.

heaps means one or two I dare say.

Also in hawthorn vs Brisbane, after Shaun Rehn had that rather interesting strapping put on his face- 'He won't be doing any sledging for a while'

I'll add one from tonight's blockbuster at the MCG-- about Collingwood's off-colour finishing...

"The Magpies ought to be kicking themselves right now, but with their luck, they'd probably miss."

Apologies to all 'Pies fans. My wife and I each thought it was a great line. :D

Cheers,
William

Noooooooooooooooo!  :(

I heard him say that, I wrote it down, and I logged on just to make it my sig. Oh well, thems the breaks. :(

The Hitman

Sorry about that, Hitman-- but sometimes, I guess I am just a little quicker.

But point being is that Dennis' mind works very quickly. He had a brilliant call tonight, once again.

Go ahead and use that line as your signature-- I'd like to see someone to do just that. :)

Cheers,
William

From the Coll v Carl game last night:

"Hard, uncompromising football.........Carlton......in the spotlight all week...they're responding well"

I'm sure it the pauses that make his calls so good (unlike that whining, know it all Brereton)

I can just hear Denis saying that
but Brereton has been very restrained lately and he doesn't get in the way of concentrating on the play ...but what you say is very true of Lyons - especially the whining voice!!!! BUt whatever he predicts in his smug voice...the opposite always immediately happens ...so he keeps quiet for awhile. :)

Sorry, Mets-- but there are advantages of watching a game with a laptop at the ready and a beautiful woman at your side! :)

Besides, I was taking notes for preparation for my new footy gig... there's another thread on this matter. :)

Cheers,
William

The best ply-by-play guys have this innate ability to use the pauses to perfection. It's called "pacing a broadcast"-- it's something you get from experience and knowing what to say, and when to say it. No amount of time in broadcasting school can prepare a PBP caller for that.

William

what was that one in the first quarter today? i was only half-listening, and missed the context, but it was something about "why did he cross the line - to get to the other side".

Another great one from the Hawks v. Freo match:

"Bell bringing the ball out of the back line.....looking for wide runners.....passes to Walker...a contradiction in terms, really"

Two more beauties from Bris v Hawks:

"Barlow to Bateman, the Hawks are attacking alphabetically"

Pure Gold. He should put out a DVD of all his best calls :)

I'm bringing this back to the top coz I actually met the man himself and got his autography when I was in Perth last week. (interrupted his dinner with his wife at Burswood). He is a fantastic guy and will always be a legend in my eyes!!
