Doesn't help that in 2014 we took two back flankers (Duggan and Nelson) a weirdo utility (Lamb) and a cripple (Cavka). Blakely and Ed Langdon were taken shortly after our picks and could have been on that midfield depth list instead of in Freo's 22.
Preaching to the choir. For a team who wanted to draft midfielders we certainly did our best to not draft many pure mids

I dont think our midfield depth is that bad when you put Venables and Jetta in the depth. All of them apart from Snadden have a chance to push for a game. The way people are talking every other team has A graders outside of their best 22

If I could be bothered I'd do a similar excercise with the other clubs

But I can't so I won't

1) Venables - Still on limited minutes in the EP reserves. WC fans (and recruiters) still praying he's the real deal after watching SPP tear shit up for port.

Don't remind me.

I'm still angry we didn't pick him, and now he's going to dominate for Port while we're stuck with a player who'll probably play a max of 2 games this year, if he's lucky.

I mean, not to discredit Daniel, but it would be nice to have a draftee impact straight away.

Skipped this last week but time for an update

Round 4 Depth :

Tall Defenders

1) Mackenzie * - had his best game of the year so far last week against Claremont. Unfortunately for him Schofield grabbed his opportunity against the swans leaving Eric as a clear 4th in line with Barrass also playing well in the seniors
2) Gorter - third tall option only if injury strikes 2 or more of our main quartet. Form at EP hasn't been great and is looking a long way off any AFL action

Small/Medium Defenders

1) Rotham - The elevation of butler and injuries to Cole and now Watson has pushed Rotham up the list. Missed last week with soreness and has been a steady rather than spectacular contributor at EP.
2) Brophy - injuries have seen Paddy move into the EP league side. Didn't have much impact on his last outing

Tall Forwards

1) McInness - Reported last week against Claremont but the charge was thrown out. Splitting his time between ruck and forward with more success as a ruck. Is trying hard at least but doesn't seem up to it
2) Lamb - not a true KPF as he's a 3rd tall at best. Form has tapered since his game against WP two weeks ago but even though he had a quiet game against the Tigers his attitude was still good I thought

Small/Medium Forwards

1) Venables - Slowly but surely he's building game time and confidence. Can find the goals and it won't be too long before he's knocking on Simmo's door for a chance in the big leagues. Salty is developing nicely

Rucks

1) There is no (1) unless you want to count McInnes which is a massive concern :(

Its the Midfield Stupid

1) Sheed* - something of a surprise omission from the eagles side for the swans after collecting 37 possessions against Claremont. Simpson is concerned about shreds defensive work for some reason so it might be a battle for him to get any Eagles action
2) Hutchings* - forced out of the side for Duggan or butler. Needs to go back to WAFL and dominate to keep pressure on the senior side. As a fringe best 22 player looks set for a season of in and out.
3) Mutimer* - Right on the cusp of selection being named as an emergency the last 2 weeks. Had an impact late in the game against Claremont after a quietish start
4) Jetta* - can rocket up this list with good WAFL form but will need to do it for more than one week before getting a recall after being dropped again. Too talented to be playing at this level but application isn't up to standard
5) Partington* - effort is there and he's finding the ball but not having enough impact
6) Karpany - form is on an upward trend and is using the ball well but numbers on the low side
7) Snadden - putting together some better league form without being a lock so a fair distance from being called into the Eagles side.

Unavailable (the length of this list is going the wrong way)

1) Darling - late withdrawal from the Sydney game after hurting his ankle against Richmond. Was apparently close to playing but was a casualty of the 5 day break and couldn't get up. How he fits back into a restructured side that played well will be interesting
2) Watson - I'm going to assume/hope that his ankle injury isn't serious and we see him return to the field in a week. Has been building a strong case for higher honours and has been EP's most consistent player so far this season
3) Cole - expected to be ready for a return next week is becoming a broken record. Surely is close but still not named
4) Allen - a bit like Cole. Can't be far off returning you'd think. Possibly through the reserves
5) Bayok- has fallen victim to #partingtonsdisease and his absence from the playing field remains unexplained
6) Rioli - still a fair way off resuming full training and return time frame doesn't seem to be changing
7) Waterman - Still in a moonboot with a foot fracture. Get better
8) Petrie - unlike others on this list does seem to actually be getting closer to a return date. He's hoping for about round 10
9) Lycett - barring setbacks around the bye is looking a chance
10) Tunbridge - the forgotten man. Who knows. No time soon though
11) Naitanui - slowly recovering and every possibility it'll be 2018 before we see him again. I doubt I'll have to change this comment all season especially after a recent setback with bone soreness

* These players (there's 6 of them) are who I consider to be the six closest to selection from outside the 22. There's quantity in the midfield depth but it's of questionable quality. Other lines are showing some deficiencies as you might expect with an 11 deep injury list

With some encouraging signs on the injury front and a reducing list, I figured now was a good time to revisit this.

This list is includes all the players other than the 22 that played against the Bulldogs last Friday and assumes the quartet of Cripps, Nelson, Petrie and Rioli will be available to play football at some level this weekend

Round 8 Depth :

Tall Defenders

1) Mackenzie * - Has been in good form in recent weeks anchoring the EP defence although his last game against the Sharks was played as a key forward providing ruck support, a role in which he acquitted himself well. Keeping pressure on Barrass for a spot which is what you want
2) Schofield* - Much like Emac, is biding his time in the WAFL hoping for an opportunity. I have him second here as a pure KPD, Emac is ahead of him but if a role opens up for a more mobile tall defender then Schoey would get the nod. Form at EP has been solid rather than spectacular
3) Gorter - Much like EP generally, Gorter's recent form has improved. Is playing more as a full back and is the last defender in the zone in the goal keeper type role. There's not many players further away from an Eagles game than Gorter and he's probably playing to keep his rookie list spot beyond 2017

Small/Medium Defenders

1) Nelson* - Has recovered from the broken arm sustained in the Hawthorn game and ready to play this weekend. A decision needs to be made as to whether he comes straight back into the senior side or returns through EP which would only delay his return to the Eagles by a week. In line with recent policy to get games into some of the younger players he'll replace Butler this week or next
2) Cole - After a delayed start to the season due to a lingering leg injury is making his way back to full and recovering his touch. Has 3 league games at EP under his belt but fair to say he's still finding his best form. Doubt he'll be pushing for a senior berth until after the bye
3) Rotham - Is plugging away at EP in what is shaping up as a purely development year and with players returning from injury would be on the cusp of being pushed down to reserves level. Don't look at this as a bad thing though as his body size is more suited to that level and he can build his confidence finding more of the footy. Is a good prospect long term that we just need to be patient with

Tall Forwards

1) Lamb - Starting to build a decent bank of form in recent weeks on the back of more support up forward and better quality ball coming in. Definite improvement in attitude and showing signs there's something there to work with and would be a chance to get a game as injury cover
2) Allen - Persistent hamstring issues delayed his to the season and has only returned to the EP senior side for the last 2 games. Has had an immediate impact kicking 3 goals in both games and has been a factor in straightening EP up providing a strong target up forward. His pace has been noteworthy since returning and is an improvement from last year. If he can maintain, or better still build on, current form Darling might start looking over his shoulder. Still pretty raw though which puts him just below Lamb at this stage

Small/Medium Forwards

1) Cripps* - Has made a much faster than expected recovery from a nasty high ankle injury sustained in the Hawthorn game. Seems certain to come straight back in to the Eagles after only missing 3 games when 8 was the initial estimate
2) Venables - It's been a slow build as the club has held him back as they and he gain confidence that his foot troubles are behind him. Is just starting to reach a fitness base that allows him to play a full game. Kicked 4 goals last weekend as a small forward enjoying crumbing off the contests the bigger players provided rather than being a marking target like he was at times. Really starting to generate some excitement and I'd expect that he'll get a game in the wings sometime after the bye to give him a taste.
3) Rioli - Suffered a significant hamstring injury during what had been an impressive preseason and is only now looking to play his first game of the year, albeit that it will be reduced minutes for EP reserves. Will need several weeks to build form and fitness before he's a chance to be in the frame for Eagles selection
4) Bayok - the 46th player on the list and is developing in the EP reserves. As a Cat B player he'll be given a couple of years to develop without any pressure of being delisted. Missed some games with a hamstring but has played the last 3 games and his stats are building steadily averaging 16 games and a goal in those games

Rucks (We finally have fit ruck backups)

1) Petrie* - Took about 5 minutes to injure himself in his first game after being one of the most durable players in the league at North Melbourne. A surprisingly strong performance by McInnes against the Bulldogs will mean Petrie will need to come back through EP but it seems only a matter of time before he works his way back into the seniors. Vardy and big Fraser won't be able to have a bad game or they'll be out
2) Giles - Lost his spot in the seniors after a disappointing game against Port Adelaide. Tap work is OK but is struggling to influence games around the ground and looks like a specific option whenever we come up against a big immobile ruck (like Sandilands) but injury aside will be spending most of his time at EP

Its the Midfield Stupid

1) Hutchings* - The definitive fringe player. Not quite good enough to be best 22 but next best in line to cover injury as you know that he's going to give a good honest effort. Is doing exactly what is needed at EP with solid form as the midfield leader. Confident that he can play his role if called upon and will keep those in the 22 honest
2) Karpany - Form at EP has been solid and has been on the fringe of selection as an emergency in recent weeks. Hit the scoreboard with a couple of goals last weekend adding that to his repertoire and his sidestep in traffic is a wonderful sight. Pressing hard for his chance
3) Jetta - Has been sent back to the WAFL to rediscover his form, hunger and enjoyment of the game after his indifferent early form saw him in and out of the side. Not having the impact a player of his talent should be so is still a way off getting back to AFL
4) Partington - missed a game with a hand fracture but picked up where he left off when returning to the EP side last weekend. Has no trouble finding the ball averaging high twenties for possessions but probably lacks the impact with his disposal to really press for selection. Is only a couple of injuries away from getting an opportunity for higher honours
5) Snadden - was relegated to EP reserves after his form tapered a little in the league side. Stats wise had a very good game in the ressies last weekend with 28 disposals and 7 tackles and but for players returning from injury would have been a very good chance to earn a promotion. As it is it looks like he may have to keep plugging away in the seconds as he tries to keep his spot on the rookie list

Unavailable (the length of this list now going the right way)

1) Lycett - getting close to a return from a shoulder injury incurred in his first game back from a knee injury. Club are saying he's returning to full training ahead of a return in 2-3 weeks time which is around about the bye after Round 11
2) Watson - Suffered a relatively serious ankle injury at a really bad time. His strong early season form would have seen him a definite chance of promotion to replace Nelson but as it stands is looking at a potential return around the same time as Slyce. Can't wait to see him back on the field as he's a genuinely exciting talent
3) Tunbridge - Has finally returned to training with the main group after a knee reconstruction. Round 15 has been slated as a possible return giving him half a dozen or so games to prove his worth retaining on the list
4) Naitanui - We don't hear much about the big fella as he continues his rehab. Club is saying a decision on whether they aim for a return this season will be made around the bye. I wouldn't bet on seeing him this year
5) Waterman - This family seems cursed. Is slowly recovering from a foot injury and is at least out of the moonboot but there's no time frame on his return. Sadly, 2017 looks like a write off

Brophy - made the decision to return home to Ireland a few weeks ago for personal reasons as it became increasingly apparent he wasn't going to develop beyond being a solid WAFL player. Seemed a nice young bloke that was well liked within the club and we can only wish him all the best

* These players (there's 6 of them) are who I consider to be the six closest to selection from outside the 22. It's a reasonable spread across all lines with a slight leaning to our back half and looking a little light on through the midfield which will surprise nobody

Do you see Gorter as becoming a tall Defender or more of a flanker?
At 191cm and 87kg he doesn't have the size to be a tall defender at AFL level so 3rd tall at best and more a flanker type

Ideally, he should model himself on someone like Rampe but he has a long way to go before he's at that level bearing in mind that Rampe was a late bloomer himself

Would Rotham be more suited to a wing more in the mould of Embley? I have only seen glimpses of him but his speed and foot skills could be pretty useful if he can build a tank.

It is great to see the bones of the next team playing together in the WAFL. Add in Yeo, Sheed, Duggan, Barrass, Mutimer, there is something to be excited in the future. A true KPF to replace Kennedy is the glaring deficiency, and to a lesser extent, another KPD and ruck although you would expect Lycett to keep going for a while if he can ever stay on the park.

I reckon he'd make a great winger. The issue with him at the moment is adding size and getting into the game. Maybe if Jetta is moved on at the end of the year he'll get ore opportunities to develop in this role at EP.

Is Jetta out of contract at the end of the season?

Nope he signed for 2018 as well. 3 year deal when he was traded. Only thing is I hope the club doesn't just hold on to him and considers paying him out if he isnt going to play AFL next year.

Agree entirely. A few posters here have said they'd like to see Rotham developed as a winger. I think he'd be more useful there than as a HB as the weakness in his game is that he gets led to the ball a bit too often.

What he does have is decent pace, a willingness to run and good disposal. Great attributes for a wing

Watson will get a game as soon as he can get back on the park.I would love to see him start in a forward pocket. He is a natural footballer, left and right, good tackler, nice sidestep and just a natural. The Dorkers would be spewing at losing their chance at getting him.I like the look of that Allen, i think he will be a goodun.Keys; i like your comment about Karpanys side step, hes very cool.I remember when they selected him, they compared his lateral movement to Kerr.Thats a huge compliment.Lamb seems to be improving,he could do worse than model himself on Kennedy,if he could get half that work ethic he would be a long way towards making the big time. These days having a good team/work ethic can put you in the queue ahead of more talented players who arnt as committed.E.G. Jetta.

I may be getting rotham mixed up with somebody else but didn't he show a good capacity for overhead marking in his draft year ?

Update time

This list is includes all the players other than the 22 that have been named to play Melbourne tonight and is assuming no late changes

Round 14 Depth :

Tall Defenders

1) Gorter - The recent strategy to play all of our KPDs means Gorter is our only depth. His form at EP in recent weeks has improved from earlier in the season but still hasn't shown much to suggest he's capable of playing AFL

Small/Medium Defenders

1) Wellingham* - missed a couple of games with an ankle injury and returned through EP last week but didn't play well enough to earn a recall. Has been named as an emergency and you'd expect isn't far away from forcing his way back in. Him not playing for the Eagles today is a positive as young guys like Cole and Duggan are keeping him out of the side
2) Butler - Has been overlooked as the club looks to rotate younger players through the seniors and a preference to play talls. Is the definition of depth now in what is arguably going to be his last season as an eagle
3) Rotham - Had a bad game last week when he was forced to play as a 2nd tall type in the absence of Eagles KPDs which highlighted his lack of size/body strength. Would like to see him given a run on the wing at some stage
4) Watson - only below Rotham due to a lack of match fitness as he recovers from what was an untimely ankle injury. Surprisingly appears to be be playing in the EP league side after a couple of underwhelming weeks in their reserves. Can't wait for him to get back to his early season form

Tall Forwards

1) McInnes - now that Lycett is back and our ruck stocks are back in order big Fraser is in line as a forward. Has shown some good form to earn himself a mid year elevation off the rookie list. Would have been close to a game after the JK injury. Playing to retain his spot on the list for 2018
2) Lamb - Quiet game last week was a blip in what had been a good run of form in the preceding weeks. Only the MC know how far from selection he was but you'd think he was in discussions for a senior game at least. I'm in the process of changing my opinion of chopper and are hoping he's still around next year

Small/Medium Forwards

No depth for you as injury takes it toll. Lecras, Venables and Rioli are all injured leaving all our fit small to medium forwards (Hill, Cripps and Karpany) playing AFL

Rucks (We finally have fit ruck backups)

1) Lycett* - Has played two games in his return from the shoulder dislocation he did whilst returning from a PCL reconstruction. Is looking rusty and needs to get some time in the ruck under his belt before resuming in the AFL. Might be a couple of weeks still but he'll be back soon enough
2) Giles - Looks as far off an AFL game as he ever has. Lacked impact last week after returning from a bout of Partingtonsdisease. I'm curious as to what his value is on our list going forward. Petrie has shown more to justify a spot in 2018 than Giles

Its the Midfield Stupid

1) Masten* - Hard to get these guys in order as they're all as good a chance as each other imo so I've got them in order of seniority. Masten is rediscovering his form in the WAFL and been told to work on his tackling and contested game. Still has something to offer but younger guys are catching/going past him
2) Redden* - Like Jetta needs an extended run in the WAFL to build confidence. Pleasingly he's had a couple of strong games and is doing what you'd hope from an experienced player dropped down a level. If needed in the seniors he has good WAFL form behind him
3) Partington* - continues to press his claims for a debut and surely can't be far off. Has kicked 4 goals in his last two games as he looks to become more damaging with his possessions. Deserves an AFL game before the season ends
4) Mutimer* - form hasn't been great since he's come back from his AFL stint. Had less than 10 disposals against Subiaco last week although he was playing more half back than midfield which would have been a factor. Did show he could contribute at AFL level though so there's something to build on
5) Snadden - has finally forced his way into the league side but struggled last week. A lengthening injury list has helped him keep his spot so he'll need a good game today as he strives to keep his spot on the list

Unavailable (has ballooned out a little after looking encouraging for a brief period)

1) Nelson - did his hamstring in his third (thanks squashface )Eagles game back after breaking his hand/wrist. Club are saying minor do hopefully a return isn't far off
2) Kennedy- maybe next week, maybe the week after that or the week after that. Who knows as he recovers from a calf or an Achilles or both. Is near death according to Hagdorn
3) Venables - sounded as if he was knocking on the door before kicking his big toe. Club are saying 1-2 weeks. Let's hope it's only one
4) Tunbridge - tweaked the hamstring in his good leg when he was on the verge of being ready to play. It's a small setback but comes at a time when he can't afford any if he wants to keep his spot
5) Lecras - has succumbed to a hip problem that's going "shut him down" for a couple of weeks before he starts working back to full fitness. Bit of a mystery what happens from here not just for this year but his future as an AFL player
6) Bayok- hamstring tightness apparently which could be a week, could be the season. We don't know the club doesn't say
7) Rioli - ****ing hamstrings. Half a league game and he does the one that wasn't operated on. A month before he's likely to be on field again at least and then needs to build form and match fitness. Increasingly unlikely we see him in the wings this year
8) Naitanui - Is running now which is good but still no definitive answers on whether or not he'll play this year. My money is on not unfortunately
9) Waterman - Is redoing his preseason and is a chance for some games late in the year. Fingers crossed
10) Allen - the first player on our list to officially be ruled out for the season after suffering a dreaded navicular injury. In a year I'd hoped Allen would take a big step forward he's had shit luck - problems with his hammies delayed his start and now this after playing only 2 reserves and 2 league games this year. Was looking good too

Brophy - is back in Ireland

* These players (there's 6 of them) are who I consider to be the six closest to selection from outside the 22. It's a reasonable spread across all lines with a slight leaning to our back half and looking a little light on through the midfield which will surprise nobody

Based on everyone not named in the 22 for the game against Port and on the assumption that all players listed on the last injury update as 1-2 weeks will be available to play at same level in Round 17 (I know that's optimistic but I don't care it's about time they got back on the park)

2) Cole*
3) Watson
