Des Meagher dies.

Hawthorn premiership player and reserves coach Des Meagher passed on condolences to his family and all Hawks supporters.

I remember Des Meagher. He used to get a million kicks on the wing for the Hawks. I was an avid stat reader in the old Sunday Press or Observer, and Des would regularly rack up 30-kick games.

Okay, a lot of them were up-and-unders, but gee, he could find it.

Great athlete and a great person. I remember listening on the radio to a State match SA v Vic. back in 1967. Played to a packed house at Adelaide Oval. Des dominated the game and was a key player in Victoria's win. The Hawks were struggling in those days and to have one of Hawthorn's players mentioned so often in the broadcast was amazing to a 12 yo Hawk fan.

Also coached Whitefriars a few years back. Met him in that capacity and was a nice man, very welcoming.

Was one of my favorite players. As you say, always got plenty of the ball, out on the wing. Wore no.30, long sleeved jumper, I think.
