Re: Port logos

Should never have dropped the word "Port" from the logo (and "PORT" from "PORT POWER!!!" in the song).

They hated being referred to by the media as "Port Power" because they were all for the whole "one club, one Port Adelaide" thing.

Here's a try at one.

Re: Port logos

Well, that was a fault by the marketers who branded the team "Port Power" rather than "Port Adelaide Power"... I remember Sam Newman correcting K.G. Cunningham on the Footy Show one time, "It's not Port Adelaide Power, it's Port Power." Shut up Sam.

If the logo had read "PORT ADELAIDE" along the top instead of just "PORT", it probably would have made things clearer. With it just reading "POWER", it makes them even less Port and more nondescript like "Kangaroos" was.

EDIT: Like this.

Re: Port logos

There are some good logos in those threads and I think that having a simple shield with the double V (for the Power) and the prison bars (for the Magpies) is the way to go. As the new Port jumper has shown, simplicity is the key to having a strong look.

Here is my attempt at the double V/prison bar concept.

That's incorrect. We are the Port Adelaide Football Club, not the Port Power Football Club.

It would be like calling the West Coast Eagles the West Eagles or GWS the Greater Giants. It was a mistake by the club in the first place but at least it was rectified.

Re: Port logos

- Port Adelaide Football Club or PAFC plus est. 1870
- Prison Bars / Black and White stripes
- Double V
- No teal domination
- Football / Scarf / Star / Crown ('traditional' feature)
- SA flag or 'two flags' concept

This seemed to be consensus in the last decent thread on the subject. http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=628203&page=4

However it's safe to say we're in a transitional period with coach players staff culture jumper etc. This even means our colors and nickname could change if we pushed for it.

I like the Raiders logo and the simplicity of the two colors and it has always reminded me of the Port Magpies logo. We would do well to do something similar with the third color (teal) only evident on the V. Having just 'Port Adelaide' would be enough I think. Strip back on the gimmicks in every way and start almost from the ground up.

Re: Port logos

also, this is a cool post, love this idea, is ridiculously similar to the Magpies logo too -

So I just had a moment.

Why can't we incorporate Black Diamond Corner?

Surely we can take this pattern, add some teal and we can have something similar to Bayern Munich's logo?

Throw in an 1870 reference and we can have something that's uniquely Port Adelaide, timeless, but also meaningful and if done the right way, modern. It also echoes the BiB guernsey.

Graphic designers, do your worst. I may be onto something here.

Re: Port logos

I felt the need to make a Port Magpies/SANFL inspired circular logo.

And another version with more shininess (trying the make the inner circle look more like the inner part of a badge/medal)

Re: Port logos

I like your ideas leearm. I concur with many of your points. This is what I think about the Port logo:

- They need a new one. Simple.
- Circular design. Too many of the AFL clubs have gone the way of the shield design. Of course a shield can look classic, but it seems very 'type A'. A circular logo keeps the 'one club' thing going. It's also a little different.
- Drop the 'Power' suffix. The club is now seen as one with the Magpies. Power leads to an annoying misuse of the name - Port Power.
- Incorporate the prison bars and the chevron design. Again, to symbolise Port as one club.
- Keep it simple.

Good points man :)

Re: Port logos

I think there's still room for the Power nickname, as shown by brothashanes second logo. In fact I've liked the image they've made for themselves since they joined the AFL as I think it's a good image for the younger fans they want to appeal to but I do think they need to balance it out with a more mature, traditional look for the older crowd (which they've already started doing with the new jumper).

While I quite like our logo and guernsey now, and even our old home guernsey, we are a fantastic case of how to fail in brand development.

We tried to push the whole attract new fans thing with the non-traditional guernsey design, the addition of teal etc, but it just wound up losing a lot of old supporters who were too attached to the prison bars. Having the Magpies in the SANFL using all of our famous old branding didn't help either, and along with a game style that was far removed from the ruthless, hard football of the previous 50 years, by the early 2000s we had people questioning whether we were the real Port Adelaide. I could write a book on how many mistakes were made and all the lack of foresight involved in our branding.

More of a traditional shield. Used the arm from the Adelaide coat of arms and the piping shrike wings to put a South Australian spin on the magpie to recognise the old Port Magpies connection without offending collingwood a great deal.

Note: the lightning bolt could look way better I know.
