Are we a destination club anymore?

Since our poor start media outlets & opposition supporters claim players wouldn't want to go to Hawthorn... even our own supporters, if they're supporters of ours.

They claim it with three main reasons...

- Not good enough young talent
- Too old too slow
- Current performances

Does my selling points help us stay as a destination club?

- Successful Club
- Clarkson as Coach
- Massive Club
- MCG Home Games
- Premiership Teammates
- New 1st Class Facilities in Dingley
- We have the finance for new Melbourne settlers
- Fitness & Medical Staff
- Blueprint of our future
- Great Culture

Thoughts?

Fitness and Medical staff would be a massive selling point.

without being hyper critical.... really need to wake up and open your eyes to the reality of some of these "selling points"

- Successful Club - we WERE a successful club, at the moment we are rubbish.
- Clarkson as Coach - yes I agree thats a genuine selling point
- Massive Club - Im guessing you mean brand wise, lots of clubs are our equal on this front.... its a necessity hardly a selling point
- MCG Home Games - depends where you're from, if you're from Victoria yes its a selling point
- Premiership Teammates - means nothings, a lot of our premiership players are on the way out and the ones who will be left don't seem to have the hunger/desire, for me not a selling point.
- New 1st Class Facilities in Dingley - These facilities are no way near being finished and are highly risky, any player coming to us in the near future most likely wont even get to experience the new facilities, once again not a selling point
- We have the finance for new Melbourne settlers - Not sure what this means?
- Fitness & Medical Staff - Yes we have A1 staff in this area (thats what got us JOM) definitely a selling point.
- Blueprint of our future - too vague, not sure our club is even certain of our blueprint going forward let alone selling it to a potential player?
- Great Culture - too dynamic a feature, very debatable wether we do have a great culture currently

If I was a Free Agent, I'd look at these factors.

- Is this team likely to have success before I retire?
- How much more are they paying me?

Everything else in your list are fringe benefits.

We can still attract players, but without the selling point of imminent success, we're going to have to offer a higher salary than we could have.

Same logic for retaining our Premiership stars. They stayed for less than market rates as we had imminent success coming our way.

Really thats it.... theres really only 3 "selling points"... the 2 you mentioned.. 1. Premiership chances? 2. How much cash?
The third is where do I come from... Dangerfield, Brad Hill, Cam McCarthy. the go home factor.

those 3 make up I reckon 95% of someones decision making and the rest fall under 5%...

We are no longer a destination club for anyone aged say 26 or over, for anyone with say 5-6 years remaining in their career to many other clubs are better placed to have a crack at team success than us.

Who can see into the hearts of other men? Not I. Nor you. But people do reveal their own motivations when they surmise on the motives of others.

It seems we have a group of supporters that follow Hawthorn primarily because it is successful.

On the destination club, there is a lot of content on the Hawthorn Foundation website (http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/club/foundation). I'll cut this sentence which is representative of the content there:

Our key vision, to be the destination club, is one of the main objectives within our strategic plan and this means providing world-class training and administration facilities to attract the best players, coaches and staff.

Oddly, it doesn't mention winning or money as the things which make Hawthorn a Destination Club. It's almost as if winning and money are an outcome of being a Destination Club rather than the argument for being a Destination Club. Amazing concept to work hard at being good and good things happen. Wish I had heard about that before.

Well put sir.
If we were a destination club because we're successful, we would be more of a down hill skier club than destination club.

the 27+ year olds like Frawley may not wanna commit to Hawthorn but anyone under that age bracket wont have any misconceptions about joining the Hawks. seriously, did Prestia and Treloar think they were going to teams that were going to win a premierships in the short term?? but at 23-24 a player will think about the money, the longer term of contract, the coaches and the future of the club on and off the field before they factor in a quick 'Premiership'.

with our half back line showing good signs (Hardwick - Brand - Burton) and our forward half still dangerous and young enough for years to come, I truly believe we need one more inside bull in the midfield to add to Jag, Mitch, Shiels and we're on our way. our problems at the moment are mental not lack of skill, but that will be sorted out by Clarko at the end of the year. Have faith people.

By virtue of the fact that we have Dingley in our plans (which someone posted was a risky venture which I disagree with by the way - 18 months of due diligence has put paid to that and we have experienced Board and CEO guiding this project) as well as a majority of the list being in the under 25 age bracket, we still offer appeal to any players that are looking at their options. Whilst we are not great on-field at the moment, there are signs there that we will be a force to be reckoned with in 2-6 years, should Clarko still be around which is also another appealing factor.

Treloar to Collingwood.
Prestia to Richmond.

Except for the fact that they are Big 4 clubs with large supporter basis what else do they offer?

Both came back to their home state from plastic franchises to play for real clubs with a lot of history.
Money was probably bigger for both of them, longer contracts too.
They are both young maybe they are hoping they can pinch premierships later in their career with their new clubs (long game)
Who did they both support as kids? wouldn't be surprised if this came into consideration too.

also the "Big 4" clubs notion doesn't exists anymore, its not a real thing, I don't know why people love trotting it out.

When does Dingley become our new base?

the answer is not quick enough

Five to ten years, probably close to five than ten.

"The Hawks are undertaking due diligence on the project, which the club says could be up to 10 years away."

Not sure if you're correcting me, or what your point is. I did include an upper limit of ten years.

"It is estimated the new home will cost about $50 million and will be constructed within five to 10 years. Planning permits from the City of Kingston have been secured." - Herald Sun, December 8, 2016.

The term destination club is vague, to me it's not a label but a mindset. We want to be the most attractive place for the best players to play their football. It's a bit like the term "employer of choice" in the corporate world. It entails many things from onfield success to financial gain, facilities, staff and post playing career opportunities among others. For me as long as we continue to offer players respect, opportunity, stability with regular chances for success onfield we will continue to be the destination club.

Not correcting you, just questioning where you got the "closer to 5 years" thing from?
I hope you're correct I just haven't seen anything to suggest it will be closer to 5 years...

I think it hurts us for free agents and experienced players. Guys like Lake and Frawley came over because they thought they could win a flag. I don't think we would be high on the list for 28 year old looking for a new club seeking success.

For players under the age of 25, the appeal of going to a successful club with the best coach in the game would still be strong.
