Reality is in his situation he shouldn’t have had a preference (if he actually did)

Even if they have major injuries he wont play this year. Levi overtaken him and wont be too surprising if Marshall did so too.
Why the bloody hell is this guy not on the West Coast list?
Even if his preference is Collingwood, a decent manager should have talked him around. If he put in a decent pre season there is every chance he'd be playing AFL in round 1.

Because there no real reason he can't back himself in to play round 1 for the Lions He was our best player last season at VFL
Great if Dev has backed himself to get into our midfield in 2025 but can not see it happening unless we have substantial injuries.
He is well behind, Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, W.Ashcroft, Berry, Bailey, Fletcher, Rayner when it comes to being in our seniors midfield rotation.... and that is without taking into account a ready to go Levi Ashcroft and a maybe ready to go Sam Marshall.
Turned down a 4 year offer last year to sign 2 at Lions.
Career suicide if he doesn't get another offer next year.

My understanding is that he had the club’s blessing to seek other offers…we always tend to get someone to where they want to go so it doesn’t sound like one was forthcoming

Baker, Graham and Owies all have more experience and are proven players.
Dev is younger. That's all.
And the Lions wanted a decent pick for a player not getting games. Would have cost us a Gross other youngster.
He had a deal locked and ready to go in 2023 but pulled back late. This year Eagles had plans for those picks.
Then the Lions were shocked no-one bid and ended up having too many picks in 24 and traded out.
Very messy situation.

He probably wasn't wrong in wanting to stay. The club got a flag and that's what he wanted. It's just a shame for him he couldn't capitalise staying on the list.
He gave up 2 years and a heap of money, plus the ability to play regular footy on a hope that he as the 25-30th best player on the list would get a game assuming Brisbane made the GF at all.
Talk about long odds.
Now he will be a fringe player who wont have played AFL for basically 2 seasons while coming out of contract at the end of 2025. Wont have many suitors, and definitely wont have any that will offer him any job or financial security.
He ****ed up big time, there is no other way to put it. He was never going to be best 23 for Brisbane in 2024 unless he did something crazy or they had a heap of injuries in the midfield - if they copped those injuries in the midfield then you can easily argue they dont make the grand final anyway.
He literally played in a grand final and had every reason to expect to play games again in 2024…he’s not the first young kid to have an injury-interrupted season and he won’t be the last…if he’s good enough, he’ll find a role somewhere in the league
