Was scrolling through youtube and came across this number. Took me back to the glory days of the SANFL, however this king hit was as bad as ive seen and I love the rough stuff.

I wonder what Bruce would say about it today?!

I thought it was only Port players who did that in the SANFL

last week in our u18 competition (in queensland btw) one guy who played for noosa used a karate move on a western magpies player, and broke his eye socket, jaw, cheekbone and nose, all in one hit. is now facing criminal charges of grievous bodily harm, and has a life ban from the sport. in the ensuing fight, there were 7 red cards, 4 ko's and 6 yellows

that's just crap for the game and the reason why it had to be softened and the highest level...

having said that any footage?

i wouldnt mind watching the 82 prelim..anyone got it. good if there were some highlight son you tube etc

seems like a better game than the GF

how many games did granger get after that game?

Certainly not as bad as some but Gowans hit on Schubert in the 2007 SANFL GF was a dog act nonetheless. The fact that Gowans only got 3 weeks for this is a joke. I couldn't care less that Schubert hit Gowans about 15 secs earlier. It's a thug act and he should have paid the price for it.

Dog act.

Says plenty about the character of a bloke who king hits a player 10 goals up in the last quarter of a GF. Gutless.

He was suspended until round 9 of the 1983 season (but was sacked in the pre-season). He was only reported for the Cornes hit, which didn't really connect, but the tribunal would've taken all the other incidents in that game into consideration.

Steven Riley took out Roger Luders behind play breaking his jaw. Ronnie Andrews ( a saint ) playing for westies had to be restrained from retaliating. I was praying for him to retaliate.

It wasn't behind play it was front on. Luders was going for a mark and Riley jumped into Luders front on with his elbow raised. Not that that makes it acceptable.
Post script to this incident was Geoff Morris and Peter Meuret "going" Steven Riley later that year in the 85 Prelim and John Riley charging into help. It's the only time I ever saw the Doc lose it on the field.

I've heard from a friend (whose father was at the game to witness it) that Neil Kerley once charged in, leading with his elbow, into an opposition player's temple one day back in the 1960s when he played for South Adelaide. I was told the name of the opposition player too, but it totally escapes me right now. The opposition player was knocked unconscious, and Kerley was escorted from the ground by police, with numerous death threats from opposition supporters near the race. Kerley's reasoning at the time was that the opposition player "had to be stopped"

You might be referring to Damien Nygaard from Norwood, but Kerley was at Glenelg then. It was an infamous incident. Kerls collected a few players in his time.

If Adelaide Hawk has a look here, he would know more about it.

Scott Salisbury kinghitting Richard Champion right in front of me during the Escort/FAI Cup Final in 1990(?), opening him up and producing more claret than Wolf Blass' bib.

But as karma would have it, the little shit went on to be a moneybags architect didn't he.

Yea that name rings a bell, and I remember him saying something about the guy not holding any grudge against Kerley, so that sounds about right.

Why I assumed it happened when Kerley was with South was because my friend's family are lifelong South supporters. It's possible they were just there to watch the footy, even though their team wasn't playing. Or maybe my friend's dad was just passing on a famous story in an 'I was there the day...' context. I don't know :p

No, Luders had taken the mark and then Riley came through ( front on ) and elbowed Luders in the face, breaking his jaw. We thrashed North that day, but that incident went a long way to stopping West going onto a Grand Final. That and Shaw the ruckman/ CHB getting injured.

Salisbury, Stringer ( alan ) and Grainger all had a habit of hitting from behind or hitting when the opposition weren't looking. They were all sh1ts.

Yeah, where is Karma when you need it?

Cornes was lucky Dave didn't land this one properly.

David landed another one in that game which ddint go in the book coz the umpy wasnt watching. If youve seen 'The way it was 82' youll know what im talkin about.

Was that the one where he broke Stephen Barratt's leg?

There was also the one that ended Twiggy Caldwell's career the year before.

I have the vid of that right here on my hard drive. Might have to put it back up on you tube at some point.
