I suspect it might have been the right hook that busted Peter Maynard's eardrum. The ump was right there and Cornes was pointing madly at the collapsing Maynard to get the ump's attention.
I think it was the week before in the 1982 second-semi, Greg Turbill planted an elbow flush into Marty Leslie's face and broke his cheekbone. Right in front of the umpire, but he suffered momentary blindness at that moment too. Legend has it Leslie only realised his cheekbone was broken when he tried to put his mouthguard back in and it wouldn't fit.
